I wanted to take a few moments to update you on the status of in-game events
and the situation with AOL's timer. ;D
As I'm sure many of you are aware, players and staff have been testing out
the use of file downloads as a means to circumvent the system timer.
Preliminary testing looks fairly promising on WAOL versions 2.5 and 3.0, and
WAOL for Win95 3.0. We are not presently aware of a single session where
this "fix" has worked for PCAOL users.
For those of you that are not familiar with the "download fix", as it's being
called, the process if fairly simple. Prior to entering Neverwinter Nights,
you would select a fairly large file and begin a download session. Once that
download begins, you then enter the game, freezing the download in
mid-progress. Apprarently AOL believes you're still downloading and you are
not then subject to the timer. I want to emphasize that this is a "patch" at
best and not a solution, as we're not certain if AOL will make changes to
prevent this "fix" from working in the future. For the moment it appears to
work now. ;D
In light of that helpful news and the decline in ghosts as people use this
method, I have approved some testing of the feasibility of restarting in-game
events. Thus, I'm pleased to announce that during the month of March, the
staff will be conducting tours, mini booths and location hunts. The number
of these events will be limited, and pending the result of this testing,
we'll look at expanding in-game events once more.
No guild sponsored events will be approved for March, nor will any banners be
run aside from those related to system problems, ghosts, and these test
events. Hopefully, our tests will prove positive and we will be able to
restart guild sponsored events again. I will keep the guild GM's informed of
the progress of our testing in the later portion of March.
I'd like to thank you all for your patience as we work our way through this
situation together. I will be creating a folder in the Neverwinter Nights
Events & Announcements area for discussion and comments related to the
testing. Please, if you participate in an event, make your comments in that
folder and let me know how it went from your perspective. I'm specifically
interested in whether you experienced any difficulties with the system
freezing, if you punted.. and so forth.
Thanks again folks!

New Player's Tour - 3/10
There was a buzzing throughout the city as rumors of brigands accosting
the citizens of Vilnask spread through the region. Lord Nasher assigned NW
Exeter to put together a band of hardy adventurers to investigate the matter
and report back to him. The call was answered quickly as Lumber777,
DMazz7777, SlicerGuy, GooseMen1, Bleu Mage, Bariagan, and I D Coyote joined
forces with NW Exeter and headed off in the direction of Southwall.
The band had not yet left Neverwinter when the puntmonster struck!
SlicerGuy fell a few feet from the Gardens where the group had started. With
a shiver running down their spines the brave band moved onward. Then the
cries of a little girl caught the attention of Bleu Mage. Through her sobs
Goosemen1 was able to discern that the girl's parent had been abducted by a
minotaur in the northwest area of Southwall; off the rescuers went!
Crocodiles and lizard men sprang from the shadows to attack. With swift
strokes Lumber777 and Bariagan cut them down. Just then, we all thought we
had seen the punt monster lurking in the shadows. When we turned to look,
Bleu Mage was gone. We pushed onward. It was not long before the huge
minotaur stepped out of the darkness with smoke flaring from its nostrils and
its horns glistening in the moonlight. We all gulped. But the minotaur was
no match for bravery that night. Lightning fast strikes and readied spells
made short work if the biped bull and its allies. It was a grand sight to
see the little girl rush to her parents outstretched arms. A few greetings,
some thank you's, we bid farewell to Dmazz7777 as he left to tend to family
matters, and back on the southward trail we went.
Stopping to rememorize spells we took a short rest at The Adventurers'
Paradise. We were joined by SSB Rath and Prince Kur. Nearly as soon as we
passed through the gate to the outskirts of Vilnask then the punt monster
struck a third time. Prince Kur was gone almost as soon as he joined us, but
we pushed on. Along the High Road we aided those in need and came upon what
Bariagan noticed were two dopplegangers of SSB Rath. Summoning powerful
magic to dispel the imposters, the true SSB Rath was flung from the realms in
the process. We bid farewell to Bariagan and JamesBnd7 joined us at this
point and we pressed on to the town of Vilnask.
We questioned the residents of the area and were greeted with open arms
and hot meals. When we came upon a dark door whose resident said only, "Go
away!" we became suspicious. Displaying warrants from Lord Nasher we
searched the premises and were attacked by a band of brigands and and Ice
Hound. The fierce backstabbing bullies were almost too much for us but we
prevailed. The stuttering, quivvering resident backed into a corner begging
us not to turn him in stating he was forced to house the thieves on pain of
death. In return for his release he offered information regarding a well
disguised door in Crossergate. I suggested we head back to Neverwinter and
provide Lord Nasher with this information. I D Coyote shouted that we should
seek out this hidden door. Before I knew it i was tied up and dragged off to
Crossergate against my protestations.
If you can't beat em, join em I guess. I convinced I D Coyote to untie
me and we headed south. Kuckhapot and Caramon414 joined us and assisted
greatly in defeating several groups of Krakens and those darned banshees that
kept giving us the willies. As we crossed into the wilderlands north of
Crossergate Nyte Vixen came upon our party. Not being ones to turn away a
lady we all eagerly asked her to join us. But it was not long before a
whirlwind of chaos scattered the party. Before I knew what had happened
there ware only Nyte Vixen, I D Coyote, Lumber777, and myself remaining...and
the Dark Temple was near.
We found the secret door easily enough, but the punt monster struck
again as Nyte Vixen was flung from the realms. With the Dark Temple so near
we could not afford to wait for anyone to return; we pressed on. A vicious
pack of wolves and ice hounds leapt from the shadows as we closed on the
temple. Lumber777 was frozen in a block of ice before Coyote and I could
save him....we pressed on again. Receiving vital information from a centaur
we were able to avoid some dangerous foes. And after we ran stumbled upon
the evil cleric deep in the temple we obtained valuable information regarding
the Hosttower of the Arcane and the Pirates of Luskan. I D Coyote and I
rushed back to Neverwinter to advise Lord Nasher, regretting that our
newfound friends did not fare as well as we.

Thanks to everyone that participated. Lumber777, Dmazz7777, SlicerGuy,
GooseMen1, Bleu Mage, Bariagan, ID Coyote, SSB Rath, Prince Kur, JamesBnd7,
Kuckhapot, Caramon414, and Nyte Vixen. It was a marathon, but it was a lot
of fun too! ;D

Purification
(submitted by: MECH Argon)
"Baliff, escort MECH Sassy to Deactivation and see she is processed without
delay."
The Amber eyes opened once more, it had been long since anything of this
nature were to progress. Seated behind his massive marble desk, Argon
contemplates the task ahead of him. The directives were clear and to the
point, yet it was apparent some type of malfunction occured in the infidels
primary programming. Unfortunate for all involved, yet necessary to retain
the military regimentation found commonplace in the barracks. Vials and
beakers bubbled unceremoniously around the laboratory of Vice Admiral Argon,
and for the most part they were experiments on armor enhancements, weapon
arrays, and other items of warfare. The obsidian marble wall glared its
defiance out of a nearby antechamber, it was time...
Standing, Argon made his way to the Antechamber...
Voice recognition- Argon/Vice Admiral/MECH High Command/Access granted
The room was sparse, save for one elongated table in the center of the room
with many devices attached to it. It was here that MECHs were created,
and.....uncreated. To most of the other, younger MECHs the nearby proximity
of even being close to this room still gave them the shivers, but it was here
that Argon made his name in the Empire..and he was not afraid to say the very
least.
A small beep on his sensor array, alerted him to the presence of another MECH
awaiting his acknowledgement...
=-Argon, this is Cisco, I have brought the item for deactivation-=
=-Advance Baliff, lets get this over with shall we?-=
Entering the small chamber of Life, yet of Death, the two new figures emerged
in the red light of the room to behold Argon..
Before them stood a rather tall MECH, with the symbol of the Empire
emblazoned on his Armor. The colors of each and every flight in the Empire
present on his breastplate, his eyes glowed a transient yellow that would
adjust to moods quickly. It was this MECH that newly purified cadets first
saw, and it was this MECH that those deemed unworthy would last view. Newer,
and higher positions awaited this MECH, yet it was unsure at this time
whether or not he could possibly give up this one...Only time would tell.
=-Step forward Sassy, you are to become one with oblivion=-
Unfurling a long scroll, Argon turns to face the condemmed.
"Your conduct as a MECH has been undisiplined and disrespectful. Repeated
attempts to correct this conduct have been unsuccessful. MECH Sassy, it is
the judgement of this office that you be terminated post haste for your
atrocities. What have you to say on your behalf before you face Gond in
shame?"
-="It is my belief that I personify the possible new age of MECH, the side
that strives for emotion, and the side that moves towards uniqueness. I do
not condone these actions of deactivation, but I will abide by them Vice
Admiral, even though I know that one day another will rise in my place"=-
Argon stares at the MECH somewhat taken back at the words. In a quiet alcove,
Cisco coughs and looks down.
I sincerly wish your integrity, and adamant thinking were geared towards
another purpose Sassy. I would think such fierce devotion to a cause would be
an asset to the Empire. However, you have chosen your path, and I have chosen
mine..approach the table.
Walking for the last time on this plane of exsistance, MECH Sassy strides to
the table, and lays down looking up at the strange light above her head.
=-As your actions have not warranted a painful death, I will allow you the
passing from our plane to the next unawares. Your parts will be used to
create MECHs of higher stature, and fierce loyalty so unlike yourself. Your
matrix will be dust by days end however...Although there is a certain amount
of irony I feel I must tell you...
"Go with Gond, MECH Sassy, let the light from his hammer Purify you in his
name".
Reaching behind her, Argon releases the Primary positronic matrix and it
falls to the floor. Sassy's eyes go blank as Cisco stands, salutes, and
departs. Argon can do nothing save stare at the fallen matrix for quite some
time...
Tapping his Communications Array, Argon summons Flame from his quarters with
orders to remove the now lifeless encasing of metal before him. The matrix
however, will remain.
Several hours later after the crews have left dragging the body away, Argon
looks again to the matrix and plugs it into his mainframe on a nearby wall.
Hearing the haunting sound over and over again, Argon drifts into a deep
sleep. In his dreams, a large metal man glowing with incandecent armor
approaches a forlorn figure kneeling before him..A smile on both of their
faces, the dream fades. Sassy had found his place at long last...
I do not condone these actions of deactivation, but I will abide by them
Vice Admiral, eventhough I know that one day another will rise in my place"

<FONT COLOR="#000000" SIZE=3>...Once inside the complex I was immediately
drawn to the incandescent light of the office I was even now being drawn
towards. The MECH's leading me to my final destination as a human were
grinning their strange metallic grin in anticipation. I knew for what I was
chosen for, yet eventhough the process is painful..I was not afraid. I was
about to become bestowed with the greatest honour that can be given to a mere
human...Purification. It is my final hope that I am content to serve in the
Empire' s dark fire for all eternity. Upon my purification (if I survive), I
am to meet a MECH by the name of Argon, who will be aiding me on my quest for
dominance of the MECH body and soul. Even now as I think of him, my skin
crawls..It is said that those who do not act according to the Empires ideals,
and thoughts get sent to Argon..and are never seen again. I am fervent in my
thoughts of pleasing this imposing figure...

"G'night all, certainly was an interesting evening".
Closing the door, the laughs and general fun could be heard quite easily. At
the farest reaches of the complex and beyond, Jewel's blush could still be
seen illuminating the nearby foliage. Gathering with fellow MECH's had become
customary over the last few weeks. In detail, stories were exchanged about
battles won, and endevours not usually heard by all were arrived at.Amidst it
all, it was Argon's first oppurtunity to meet and greet his brethern with
emotion. The new chip allowed most powerful emotions, yet kept them under
severe control unless warranted. It was definitely the best of times on many
levels for Argon, and for MECH as a whole..Accompanied by the ever radiant
MECH Pearl, Argon proceeded down by the Battle Angel barracks...
"You dont come this way much do you Argon?"
"No, the majority of my time was spent in my laboratory, creating new and
improved armor and weaponry, I see now how much I have missed. Since my new
dampener installation, I admit to feeling more whole if that makes any sense
to you."
"Actually, I do understand, emotion is what makes us who we are and gives us
what we need to be our own MECH. I had hoped one day you would come out of
your cloud of work and join the rest of us, ", Pearl grins. And dont think I
didnt notice you staring at me during the gathering either."
"I would say that if I could blush dear, I just might right about now", Argon
actually smiles. I was merely observing your beauty from afar. I take it my
attempts were blatant and unabashed as usual then."
"Yup, they were, but I enjoyed the scrutiny".
Arriving at the Angels block, Argon strides to the door...
"Well, here we are..and see no monsters got you on the journey", Argon
laughs. I'm surprised you dont have flocks of people following you when you
walk around dear. Given the oppurtunity, I would follow you just about
anywhere myself..."
Blushing slightly, Pearl turns to gaze at Argon..
"I dont know what to say Argon, except that I wish the same things too."
Drawing closer to each other Argon reaches up to grasp on to Pearl's
hair..Drawing closer still, Argon feels himself drift away until ..a mere
inch away now.......
"Vice Admiral SIR! Message for you from
Commander Wolff SIR!", Intones Cadet Cyrpt. I was looking all over for you
SIR to deliver this to you SIR!"
Argon takes the datapad from the Cadet and punches a few buttons..
Was playing around in your laboratory again, and uhh...theres a fire. Things
arent too bad and your office has a nice blackened appearance to it now ;x
~~Wolff
Remembering where he was just a few short minutes ago, Argon dismisses the
cadet and reachs for Pearl....to come up with empty air. Seeing the door
closed Argon realizes the moment not only passed, but will have to be
postponed. Crushing the datapad in his hand, he returns to his office
prepared to put out the fires of his office.....and his desire as well..for
now..if she will have him.
Vice Admiral Argon
***
The interruption sparks off a series of emotions through Pearl,
Disappointment, relief, fury, fright, joy and confusion.
Seeing that Argon's attention is focused on Wolff, she silently enters her
quarters and closes the door.
Pacing across the floor Pearl mumbles to herself, "What is going on here..
what am I doing..what is happening?" Sighing she sits on her Rejuv bed and
puts her head in her hands. "He is a Vice Admiral for Gond's sakes Pearl!"
His anger this evening was frightening, and it wasn't even directed at her.
And then in the hallway, he was like a different person all together.
Looking up, Pearl notices all her gear has been transfered to her new
quarters and needs to be put away. Thinking that it will give her something
to take her mind off Argon for a bit, she gets off her bed to start the
chore. "Hey!" she exclaims, "I've got Mosie to do that for me hehe."
Dropping everything, Pearl leaves her room in search of Argon, and answers to
her many questions.
As she wanders through the corridors toward Argon's lab, she can't help but
think how his hand felt in her hair. "I must get to know him better." She
says aloud.
Mech Pearl
***
Upon first glance the laboratory's new charred look really didnt phase Argon
all that much. A dark decor suited him just fine for the most part. Lately
the need for light seemed to call to him however..most perplexing indeed.
"Well SIR, the fires are all put out and uh...I'm sorry SIR", intones Wolff.
I should know better than to play with your flame thrower cannon.
"No problem at all Wolff, I suppose it needed a test run regardless, its been
too long since it had any field usage."
Secretly jubilant over his stroke of luck, Wolff salutes and exits the room.
Normally an offense such as this would have sent his head spinning around the
room several times. The old Argon was legendary for his discipline...This new
one though, left the mind to wonder.
Sitting on his now black desk chair, Argon sits and reflects on the evenings
transgressions..A closeness not felt surrounded him still eventhough he was
now alone. An even larger feeling of...of something not discernable crept
inside his matrix. He replayed the corridor scene over and over again in his
mind. The scent of lilac..The touch of straw...Followed by the rude
interuption. All of it was very clear still in his mind. Generally, Argon
felt it was not possible to feel in this manner. His job called for a
coldness of heart, and it was incumbent upon him to give no quarter when
dealing with fellow MECH's and their careers. Failures were not tolerated in
the least...Remembering Sassy, and the quickness oblivion was awarded her by
his own hands, Argon wondered if he could do such a thing again if called
upon to do so. A few simple turns of his laser wrench could remove the
emotion chips and dampeners. However, after the nights happenings, this was
no longer an option..Closes his optical sensors, Argon thought about quite a
number of things...
(( I know what its like to feel 100% devotion to something, like I do to my
duties. But I am not familiar with showing another being that same devotion.
Given the small amounts of time alotted by Gond following Pearl's
Purification rites, I really must say I have actually enjoyed myself, to the
fullest extent. The time spent with her was glorious, yet it never seemed
like it was quite enough, like I didnt want it to end. What exactly could
that mean? )))

Surrounded by minions of some petty god, Argon stood towering over them..His
plasma guns flaring bright red death upon them. His translucent eyes absorbed
their life force, even before they died. Perhaps one day they would learn not
to toy with such a seasoned Lord of battle..perhaps not. Wiping their blood
off of his tunic on their saddle bags, Argon sat in the clearing when a sound
was at his back...
"Well...I suppose I am a bit late, but I did watch the majority of your
handiwork from a nearby tree," Pearl exclaims playfully.
A laugh as loud as Gond himself filled the woods at that moment. Guns still
smoking, Argon stood to his full height to regard Pearl..
For the most part..To say she was strikingly beautiful would mar the
description, and would fail as an understatement. Amid the purest of green,
she stood out among them quite easily, in their worship they bowed and swayed
in the wind. Glistening in her sparkling Angel battle armor, her hair of the
purest blond fell about her shoulders. The sun reflecting off of her skin
jabbed the light directly into Argon's receptors...But it was a good feeling,
and a small price to pay at such a sight. It was at this moment that Argon
felt his first connection to the Angel...And it was a moment not forgotten
months later. Her flashing grin amidst the trees would remain in his memory
for a very long time...
%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%
Still seated at his charred desk, the Vice Admiral stared through the
darkness...He very much wanted to stride from the room, and once more travel
to the Battle Angel side of the complex. Undoubtedly Tasha would be standing
guard...Keeping her Angel's virtue was paramount to her, an aspiration Argon
highly respected. To do so might frighten Pearl however, but to see that grin
grace him once more would certainly make his evening..possibly his life.
In an effort to quell these overpowering feelings coursing through him, Vice
Admiral Argon accessed his private data links to the central computer...
%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%
The data flew by him at 1,000 pages per second..Yet Argon read none of it.
What exactly is happening to me? Am I malfunctioning? And who would be able
to tell if I was? It was near impossible to shake these feelings of....bliss?
Joy? At one time the Vice Admiral would jeer at the others who wasted their
time on such petty emotions. However, it was this time that Argon found
himself locked into its deadly embrace. How ironic..But it was certainly not
a terrible experience. In fact, it was something Argon seemed to suddenly
hold quite close to his metal heart..
Moving strictly on impulse, he stood and walked to the door of his
antechamber. In a few moments he could be near her...Even if it was simply a
few hundred yards closer, it would suffice..for now.
Striding down the torchlit halls, the Vice Admiral met many of the guards on
night duty. With a casual salute, and a grin of brotherhood, he continued
down the hall not sure what to do when he got to his destination...or if he
could make it. Turning the corner of the Great Room, Argon bashed directly
into another MECH..Muttering an apology, he looked up to greet the MECH...and
stared directly into MECH Pearl's sky blue eyes...
"Going somewhere this time of the night Vice Admiral?"
Too startled to move or speak..The excuse blurted out..
"Why yes actually, I was just heading out to get some fresh air".
"Well, I'd hate to be the one to tell you Argon, but the exterior doors are
the other way", Pearl smiles playfully. Perhaps the complex moved..."
Words frozen in his throat, Argon stood helplessly in the center of the
corridor...
"Well, uhh...Oh my.." Maybe you'd like to join me just outside the doors, I
hear the guards are poaching humans tonight. Or maybe we could just breathe
some fresh air for a change together.."
"I'd like that Vice umm..Argon," Pearl grins.
Hooking arms, the two walked down the hallway and in short time, made it to
the double doors of the complex..
Vice Admiral Argon
Proudly...MECH
***
Exiting the compound, Argon and Pearl hear a battle taking place off to their
left. "Yes Argon, the guards are in conflict this night, would you like to
walk down and take a look?"
"Sure, if that's what you would like to do." Argon replies with what only a
fellow MECH would call a smile.
Following the sounds of battle, a rustle is heard in the bushes up ahead of
them. Looking in the direction of the noise, Pearl's sky blue eyes turn ice
cold as she spies and escapee from the battle. Without a word to Argon, she
quickly rushes into the bushes to take care of the coward.
Looking to see where Pearl went in such a rush, Argon hears a high pitched
scream. Running in to find what all the commotion was about...he sees Pearl
leaning up against a tree brushing off her uniform, and a human corpse lying
on the ground in front of her.
Looking up to see Argon looking at her, she smiles sheepishly, "Sorry about
that...but I sure do dislike humans, and human cowards even worse."
Pushing off the tree, Pearl walks over and takes Argon's arm...
"Now...how about we finish that walk?"

The night was tepid and humid...Just outside the complex the moon rained its
incandecent luminescence down upon the two travelers. So intent were the two,
that they hardly noticed several miles had passed between them and the
complex main doors already. Lost in conversation, they walked on...
Reaching a small hilly area, Argon stood atop of it and lay down to gaze upon
the stars. The obsidian drapery of space glared back its defiance in its own
tranquility. Argon's long cropping of dark hair blew back from his face as he
rested upon a nearby rock.
"Ever wish you could just reach out and touch the hand of Gond ?"
"I havent been outside the complex enough to contemplate that
Si...Uhh..Argon", Pearl Exclaims. I really think its lovely out here though.
Will you take me here often?"
"It would be my pleasure to Pearl, this is a great place for thinking. I used
to come here more often when I was in Command of my own flight of MECH's.
Back then the pressure was unreal and extremely demanding..Coming here now
with you, seems..right to me. I'd very much welcome the oppurtunity to see
you in the moonlight more often. Somehow I doubt a more beautiful sight I
shall ever behold again. At least until the next time", Argon smiles...
%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%
Coming to rest beside him, Pearl joins Argon as they glance upwards and into
the eyes of Gond...
"I have to admit I'm not sure what I'm feeling, I notice myself hastening to
be at your side often, eventhough I hate to disturb your work", Pearl
mentions.
"My work has been my sole reason for exsistance for some time now dear, I
have never truly been alive until recently. My first experience with my
MECH's was the Rejuv, and I will say I had a nice time. It was not until you
looked at me that I felt something had changed within me. The new dampeners I
had intstalled upon myself were not meant to house too powerful an emotion.
Although I feel through Divine Intervention, somehow I am feeling beyond what
I had thought I shoud be. The spirit of Gond truly walks among us, and I am
flattered he has taken a personal interest in me honestly. The emotions I
feel I am blessed with I shall not waste.."
Watching the wind blow through her hair, Argon was made to reflect on what
exactly he was feeling, and how far he should take it as well..Leaning closer
to her, he could faintly feel her warmth beside him. The race of Trained
killers, all with their constant battle with emotion. Anything regarding
those of the lesser races was dealt with in cold blood. Anything regarding
each other was dealt with accordingly, and with the utmost of concern taken.
We are a tight knit race, and we are superior, as it is through Gond's forge
that we came to be. And we shall impress our thoughts and ideals throughout
the realms and dimensions known to us. Yet within each of us stirs a deep
emotion..One that must be drawn out. It was at this moment that Argon decided
his course of action looking upon the radiant Pearl..
"Come, lets get you back to the complex and your Rejuv unit. I'll not have
you in trouble with Tasha for staying out so late and missing your lessons."
Just now realizing that Pearl's head was on his shoulder, Argon felt a small
pang of.....something in his chest. Picking up her chin and looking into her
face, Argon saw she was already fast asleep. Grinning to himself, Argon
kissed her forehead and picked her up.
Argon carried her all the way back to the complex without stirring her...
To be continued..

The day was relatively full for him already. Argon walked from his Rejuv
chamber to sit back in his office chair, the same image stuck in his memory
bank...
((( Override Entry Code- Argon, Vice Admiral.MECH High Command ))
Carrying the inert figure of Pearl to her Rejuv, Argon looks again upon her
face. Her angelic features in slumber were astonishing to him. Placing her on
her Rejuv, she gives off a soft moan. Activating his Shadow Merc implants,
Argon stalks quietly from the room without even the slightest trace of his
passing. The long walk back to his chamber was filled with the image of her
face as he left her,..and the faint smell of lilacs.
"Good Morning SIR!"
"Good Morning SIR"
Awakening from his revelry Argon glanced up to see Krypt and Virus reporting
for their daily sessions. Although the training went excellent for the day,
Argon would still look back to the complex and wonder where Pearl was
now...And what she was thinking...

Waking from her slumber, Pearl stretches and thinks back to the night
before...
Argon and herself sitting in that quiet little spot...The way he looked so
intensly at her with those deep dark eyes of his, the way his long black hair
played in the wind, how content she was just being with him, and also the way
it made her feel just to lay her head on his shoulder and....
Sitting up quickly, Pearl mumbles, "what happened after that, how did I get
back to my quarters?" Thinking back to the last thing she remembers, it
finally dawns on her "I fell asleep!!" She mutters..
Sighing she thinks, "Well, I was tired and it was a long day. I don't
remember walking back so that means that Argon had to carry me all that way
back here." Mildly embarassed, but smiling estaticly, she thinks, well, it's
over and done with now, I will just have to explain to him next time I see
him...Whenever that will be.
Getting up from her Rejuv bed, Pearl gets ready for her first day with her
new flight, and her first lessons as a Battle Angel.

Reeks of Rotten Meat - Part 1
(The Beginning, The Direction and Dishmail)
(submitted by: WG Wage)
To sum up who Lorse is, would be a long story. He's been through much and
there's only so much I can tell. But in anycase, Here is the story, of my
adopted cousin, Lorse's life:
-----
As an infant, Lorse's mother, a human woman, was lost in the woods and came
upon this small house. She was nearly out of food and was holding her child
in a bag that once had her meat rations in it. Desperate to keep the baby
alive, and knowing that she was dying herself, she left the baby on the
doorstep, knocked, then ran into the woods abandoning him.
Soon, Eremohteh Boltrane, an elf that lived with his wife Firma alone in this
house for whatever reason, opened his door and saw the infant lying there
looking back at him. He knelt down and picked up the baby, then turned to
his wife behind him and said,"Somebody left a baby for us?"He then looked
down at the child in his arms,"He's adorable! I think it's human."
"Poor thing!"said Firma,"Wh... what's that smell?"
Eremohteh took a deep whiff of the child,"He... he reeks of rotten meat..."
And since then the child was named ,"Lorse Wilbur Hethomere Rathcart
Boltrane," Which in a dialect mixed with basic elven and many other almost
forgotten languages means,"Reeks of Rotten Meat, Boltrane."
Lorse lived for seventeen years with his adopted elven parents, His parents
never let him know that he was human or adopted, they just didn't have the
heart. Meanwhile Lorse grew up fast, while his parents hardly aged, but
Lorse never seemed to care too much, he was usually too busy with his turnip
garden or some other activity he enjoyed doing to really notice probably.
Finally, on Lorse's eighteenth birthday, Eremotheh told Lorse,"Son, it's time
you went out into the world and learned the ways of these lands. Explore the
world, see the sights, adventure and learn to support yourself."
Lorse was teary-eyed,"Where shall I go father?"
"Out there! Where the wind blows harder and the waters wave larger and the
trees sway longer and the roads trail further and the birds squawk louder
and... well, I think you get the picture. Anyway, here's supplies for about
a week or so and directions to the nearest town, bye!"And with that,
Eremohteh kicked Lorse out the door. As Lorse sat in front of his home,
rubbing his now hurting behind, he turned and saw his father in the window
calling out one last word of wisdom,"And remember! We didn't name you Reeks
of Rotten Meat for nothing!"And he slamed the window shut.
So, Lorse left...
^^^^^^^^
Lorse looked down at his directions. A sheet of paper with on long arrow
that read alongside it,"Go that-a-way." His parents had a very eccentric
sense of humor. But since he had nothing better to do, he did as his paper
told him, and went "that-a-way." Or basicly whichever direction the arrow
happened to be pointing when he looked at it.
After a week of traveling, he ran out rations and began to get quite hungry.
One night he heard an old man singing, and could catch an odor in the air,
the scent of... wild boar being cooked! He followed his nose and his ears
followed the singing.
"Ah'm just an ol' lost wand'rer, just an ol' lost wand'rer,
cookin' up mah food hea, a-sittin' by the fire..."
"Ah'm just an ol' lost wand'rer, just an ol' lost wand'rer,
Lookin' fer sum help so Ah ken fahnd mah way, home..."
Lorse pushed his way through a few bushes, and behold, there sat a man in
clerical garments, with a dead boar over a fire, singing his heart out. The
man had such a strange accent, like nothing Lorse recognized,"Sir!"
"Whoze thea!?"The man said suddenly at alert, with mace in hand.
"Can you please... lend me some food?"
There was a pause,"Wut's yer name fellah?"
"My name is Lorse Wilbur Hethomere Rathcart Boltrane."
There was a long pause, and suddenly the cleric busrt into laughter,"Who in
tarnation went 'n' named ya that!?"
"You know what it means... I can tell..."
"Well dernit! Wut kinda parents name they kid,"Reeks o' Rotten Meat"? That
be good fer a good laugh it is dawgone it!"The cleric slapped his knees,"But
c'mon o'er here fellah, Ah gots a good feelin' 'bout ya, have sum food wit'
mah, there be a'plenty ta share!"
"Thank you!"Lorse cheered,"Um, what's your name?"
"Call me Dishmail. Young fellah, dat's a-right, Dishmail's mah name 'n'
healin' be mah game! I gots me the best clerucal spells this end o' tha
woods, I ken ga-run-tee!"
"You're a cleric?"
"Dat's a-righty!"Dishmail cheered,"Ah'm a cleric o' Tymora, Goddess o' Good
Fortune, ya know, luck 'n' stuff. Why, if I weren't so dern lucky, Ah
wouldn't o' happened to fahnd this hea rabbit Ah'm a-cookin' up!"
"Ah... um... that's a boar."
Dishmail just sort of shrugged,"It is? I coulda sworn it wuz rabbit."
"You can't tell a rabbit from a boar?"
"Nosiree, Reeks o' Rotten Meat, Ah doan realla care tho'. Food be food, no
matter wut animal it be!"Dishmail sighed,"Ah'm as blind as a bat, fellah.
Have been since Ah became a cleruc o' Tymora. It wuz a very bad accident
wit' a grapefruit knife that made mah blind lahke dis. Ah'd rather not talk
about it. So, wut brings you aroun' dese parts?"
"Well,"Lorse said,"I've got these directions to the nearest town an-"
"Wut!? Y'all gots directions!? Yeeeeehaw! We gonna gets along great!
Ah've been stuck in these dagnamed woods for months 'n' months now 'n' Ah
need somebody who plum knows thea way around! I'm sick-o eatin' nutin' but
rabbit."
"Boar."Lorse corrected.
"Ah meant boar!"Dishmail said,"But when we be done wit' dis food 'n' git us
sum shut-eye. We ken use yer directions ta git us outta this forest!"
"Sounds good to me..."Lorse smiled.

Aztec...Private of the Napalm Monks
I awoke today with the strangest feeling...after overcoming the minor
tremors of vertigo, I looked around at my surroundings and found that they
were completely alien to me as if I were seeing them for the first time, yet
in my memory I could recall every bit of information on this place despite
the paradox of me never being there..or so I thought. I think the term for
this is De Ja Voux or something like that.
I sat up on my bed...rejuv couch...the word popped into my head..I looked
at the wall I was facing. The wall was of a smooth polished metal...steel
plating..again the new term appeared in my head...the surface was of a
reflective quality...I stood and walked over to it and looked at myself...The
face, it was familiar to me and yet it was not..I seem to recall seeing it
before, but it did not feel like my face. My eyes were not how I remembered
them...
Suddenly the room around me changed color...across my sight "Heat Sensors
Engaged" flashed and then disappeared...the world changed after the momentary
flash of pain...the room was covered in shades of blue with several spots of
yellow ranging to red surrounding my bed..rejuv couch.
I had no idea what I had done or how to change it back...but I turned
around in the center of my room, marvelling at the new visions I was
receiving...
There was a desk in the back corner of my room with a small square or patch
of yellow eminating from some kind of box..Terminal Access to Main
CPU...these terms that I knew yet did not were starting to disorient me. I
crossed to the desk and sat in the chair..still the..heat sensors..would not
disengage, but I could partially make out the writing on the screen....it was
not the writing I seemed to recall knowing, yet again the words and phrases
were perfectly comprehensible to me...MECH AZTEC....the name was complete
foreign to me although it felt right..
"Aztec...MECH Aztec, Private assigned to the Napalm Monks." I read the
words on the screen...
"Yes...Aztec...that is your Name Brother."
I Jumped from my chair and turned to face the stranger..as I did so...the
following phrases raced across my vision..."100% daylight vision engaged"
"Tracking Sensors Engaged" "Target in short range Scaners" "Defensive
systems Operational" "Weapons systems Operational"
It was too much for me all at once..my vision blurred and my head ached. I
felt..power..coursing thru my form and yet I did not know what to do with it.
I looked into the strangers face..
An image of a man pointing a weapon in my face and then darkness crossed my
vision. The man was familiar...The Name came to me then.
"Help me Rasta....I do not understand this."
He stepped forward and reached out his hand to me..."Come Brother. Let us
begin your training."-Veiled Shadows-

He watched those around him like a hawk watching prey. In a way they were
just that, all of them, prey. His cold calculating eyes could measure the
size of a purse as far as an arrow shot from him. He could hear the jingle
of coin a stone throw away and never missed a chance to improve his
"situation". But this was how he had made a living, preying on the weak.
Always hiding in shadows, veiled by darkness, feasting off the supple twists
of fate that put money in the purses of others and lined his pockets when
misplaced purses found their way to him. Many would call him evil, a fiend,
cold and dark, but he wasn't, not in his heart, he was just a man making a
living in a capricious world.
He always thought of himself as an opportunist. In fact, as he was learning
how to read write in the great Library, he looked up the word opportunist. He
wasn't sure about the word "noun" but he thought "One who takes advantage of
an opportunity to achieve an end, often with no regard for principles or
consequences" fit him nicely. So nicely in fact, he decided to take this
opportunity to swipe the word book and make his way out into the night.
It was this self proclaimed title, as he studied the word book with meanings
back at his little flat, that led to many other titles and names. He was
shocked at some of the things he had been called by others but none seemed to
fit like "opportunist", not even the one his woman had called him on so many
occasions "arrogant." True he was prideful, but arrogant seemed so....hard.
After all, he knew he was good at what he did, there was never a question
about that.
Sighing, he closed the book setting it down at his side. His mind slipped
back to a time when he had a name and he was much younger. He was a bright
lad, with a fairy tale family. His parents were wealthy, and it was easy for
him to live the spoiled life bathed in wealth and finery. He had the best
teachers, the finest clothes, and was slowly developing into a fine young
man. Then life decided to extract revenge.
One hot day in midsummer, when the heat rolls in waves off the cobbled street
and water becomes as scarce as the fleeting shadows under the sweltering sun,
he was returning home from the market. His step was light after another
successful mission to the bazaar for his mother and he cast baleful glares at
the bright sun as sweat dripped into his steel gray eyes. The sun wasn't his
favorite thing, he always felt that in a way the sun was all seeing, kind of
like the Aes Sedai people he had read about, but he knew they were more a
myth than a reality. The burning sun though was no myth. In fact, in
midsummer it was a down right curse on the lips of many, but then again so
was the Aes Sedai's. Perhaps they were one and the same after all. Wiping
the sweat from his forehead again, he put the thoughts of Aes Sedai and the
accursed sun away for the day as he ducked into the doorway of the Green
Griffon Inn trying to catch his breath through burning lungs. Then his day
took a decided turn for the worst.
Like the troubled sun sinking to the distant horizon, he saw trouble on his
own horizon. A couple of local bullies who liked to prove their superiority
over the "little rich boy" were waiting for him. He was a small lad,
powerful, graceful, and yet not big enough to ever survive these two. He sat
watching them from the shadowy interior of the canopied doorway knowing they
were basically harmless, but today there was a feel in the air like something
was amiss. He hoped it was just the forboding sun but as he stood there
watching them the hair on the nape of his neck stood on end and shivers ran
down his spine. They were definitely waiting on someone and he knew then and
there they were waiting for him. Sitting there he studied them a moment
longer wanting to be home quickly for his mother, before stepping out of the
shadows and boldly making his way to them. A single hand moved to the small
purse at his side to pay their toll. He smirked, as they put it "to ensure
his safety until he got home." Slowly he came to a halt before them looking
into their eyes, one hand thrust into his purse. They glared back menacingly
and all become silent as if they were waiting on something. He slowly pulled
his hand out, coins gripped tightly in his clammy fingers. Then his dark eyes
grew large. Looking down at the cobbles his small shadow was consumed by a
larger one and there was thump of something heavy coming down on his head.
As darkness slowly washed over him he heard in the distance the jingle of his
coins as they bounced and rolled across the street and maniacal laughing of
one of his shadowy attackers.
A dog barking in the distance. Slowly he returned from his distant memories
to look around the small flat. The word book lay next to him long forgotten
like much of his past. He sighed to himself looking at the clothes his girl
had left behind when her road ended abruptly. It was nothing new, this end
of life for most who were in his line of work, but she was so young, so
intelligent, and talented. He had admired her in his own way and love-, well
cared about her at least. This was her place, well before she met her
untimely end on that heist. Now it was a safe place for him, a place where
he could collect his thoughts and rest in the arms of past memories.
Reaching down to pull a dagger from his boot, his gray eyes lighted on the
scars on his wrists. Ah yes, fate was cruel and capricious too.
Shackled. The shackles clamped tightly on his small wrists sending throbbing
pain through his torn hands, that mirrored the pain in his throbbing head.
He felt the sickly wet blood matting his dark hair where he was hit.
Instinctively he reached up with his bound hands, the shackles pulling
tightly against the wall, trying in vain to feel his wound. His bleary eyes
tried to focus and everything would fade in from shadows to pristine
clearness then back to shadows again. Suddenly the door opened up and a
bright light flooded the room shining directly into his eyes.
"Where am I ?" his small voice rang out. "Why was I brought here?"
"SILENCE!" the voice screamed out. "Hush little rich boy, we will ask the
questions. Get used to the accommodations, they are the best you will be
seeing for a while."
The light bobbed and moved. "Wait...." his voice screamed out, pounding
against a door that was already closed.
How long he waited in that cell he will never know. When you are locked in
virtual darkness with nothing but the stench and rats to keep you company,
one day blends into the next, till all days are the same. Every day becomes
a day of darkness, then you try for hours to brake the bonds and set yourself
free, ultimately failing, then you talk to yourself in a mad fit just to
split the insane quietness. Finally you give up and sleep only to start
again the next day.
He didn't see much of his attackers. They were scarce, only coming in to
feed him and bring him water. Some days they missed and other days, the
portions were extremely meager and unsatisfying. He was alone in a cold
dark world, far away from everyone.
It was one night as he was dreaming of days past, when he awoke with a start.
Goose bumps ran up and down his skin, and his flesh crawled as if he had
touched something vile. He laid back against the cold stone wall and sought
that inner calm he always found when he was studying, but tonight it wouldn't
come. In fact he was oddly disturbed. As he sat there shivers coursing up
and down his spine, he could remember the feeling and bring himself back to
that uncomfortable point. It was like standing on the edge of a great chasm,
looking down into the darkness. Afraid to jump and yet so tempted to by the
unknown. He could retrace his steps to that edge, bringing back the shivers
and coldness. He felt like he was just an inch away from finding some
incredible insight, but didn't have the guts to take that extra step. To
step off that edge for better or worse. To embrace the temptation that
called out to his gloomy soul. Closing his eyes, he laid back down and
sought sleep, the memories of the edge and cliff keeping him company till
troubled dreams of falling into darkness claimed him.
Brightness. Slowly he opened his eyes peering about confusedly in the well
lit room. Rough hands grabbed him by the shoulders lifting him to his feet.
He stumbled into the thick arms of another and was pushed through the door.
He landed with a sickening thud against the far wall, sliding down to his
knees only to be picked up and sat on his feet again. He weakly tried to
throw a punch to the laughter of many, before he was shoved down the hall.
He slammed into a thick wood door which hung slightly ajar, catching himself
before being thrust into yet another well lit room.
He came down hard on his knees catching himself on a small stool. He looked
about the room in wonder, his eyes growing accustomed to the light. He found
himself in a small room with no exits. It had the working appearance of an
office. Many books lined one wall and a large oak desk stood proudly in the
center of the room. Upon the finished desk, sat a quill and parchment.
Hoisting himself on to the rickety stool, a man entered the room followed by
a stout guard. He walked with ease and confidence of someone who was used to
being in control. He had a concealing mask over his face, long black robes
hung to the floor making it hard to define if he was thick or thin and a long
sword rested easily on his hip.
The guard was dressed similar but didn't command the attention that the man
pacing in front of him did. He didn't even notice, so intent was he on the
masked man, when the guard slipped up behind him and took his small hand,
grasping one of his fingers, as the powerful man stopped pacing and set a
quill down before him.
His voice rang out like ice. "This can be simple or hard. I want you to
write a note to your family demanding the payment of 10,000 jewels to the
innkeeper in Red Larch. If you do not comply in the next five seconds, you
will pay."
"Sir, pleas-"
"3,2,1-"
Snap! One of his fingers split as the guard tweaked his pinkie back. He
screamed out in rage. His body shaking, bringing him to that edge. He was
slowly pushed closer and closer to the edge of that cliff. He looked at his
mangled finger with disdain, his temper flaring, power radiating from the
darkness beyond the cliff beckoning him to jump.
"Now we will try again. This time you will comply or it will be worse." his
icy tone again chilled the room.
"NO."
The guard started tweaking his finger. He could see the edge of the cliff in
his mind moving closer to him as the pain increased. The power was like a
hot fire waiting to consume him. At the moment his small finger started to
break, the bone starting to fracture and crack coupled with the sadistic
laughter of the guard, he jumped, stepping off that shadowy cliff, never to
return again. He gave into the red fiery power that burned so brightly in
him. His life, in all its youthfulness flashed before his eyes and he
screamed once, as the bright darkness took him to new heights and he reached
out, embracing the power that welled deeply within him. Time slowed and he
released the power, pushing it through his body. Then darkness.
Gray eyes snapped open lighting on the black and white cat named "Lace" took
the liberty to jump on his lap and beg his attention. His fingers slipped
down, easily running through her thick fur, petting her tenderly. Cats were
funny like that though. They only let you hold them when they wanted you to,
and to them petting was something that us humans only had a right to do at
their convenience. They come up to you purring loudly asking for attention
and like the fools we are, we fall into their traps giving them what they
desire. That only makes it worse for us humans as the cats learn how to
rule us in their way. It was the same then too.
Perhaps things would have been different for him, had he gave the thugs what
they desired. Perhaps his life would have led him to greatness instead of
the this shadowy existence, running from the law, from safe house to safe
house. All he had to do was write a simple note, but to him, how many more
families would pay? No he chose to die instead of letting his fate find
someone else. To the thugs, unlike the cat, he refused to give them what
they wanted.
Waking up and peering around the small office his eyes grew large. He had no
recollection of what transpired but the room was torn into shreds. It looked
as if a small explosion had been set off in the middle of them room and all
that was left was the charred remains of the guard who was breaking his
fingers. He looked down at his bloated fingers, biting his lip, wincing as
he popped his fingers back into place. Darkness threatened to take him again
as pain washed over him but he persevered knowing he had to move or risk
being captured again.
Standing, he looked around the burnt office. The man with the icy voice was
gone and deep forboding filled his breast. He bent, sifting through the
ashes of the dead guard, taking the few coins that hadn't melted and was out
the door in the blink of an eye. It didn't take him long to find his way
out, and as he broke into the night he found himself in a forest He turned
marking the cottage in his mind, knowing he would return and extract his
revenge. In the distance he could see the twinkling lights of Neverwinter.
Limping, he struck off into the starry night, torn knees leading his torn
body home.
Not much is remembered of that trip. He was exhausted and fell many times.
The lack of food and water had taken a toll on him and he found himself
somewhere between consciousness and unconsciousness, but stumbling on
regardless to avoid capture. He was afraid and every shadow and jumped at
the slightest sound. The road was a slow hard one always knowing that
somewhere behind him was the man with the icy voice. He would forever be
hunted.
He stumbled through the gates of Neverwinter to a city in turmoil. People
were running around and screaming. Panic filled the streets. The air tasted
of bitterness and he knew something horribly wrong. He turned sharply,
moving swiftly up the street to his familys estate, wanting to be home, to
tell them all that had happened to him, so his family could make
preparations. Then a large orange flash caught his sharp eyes. He ran up the
street, past the bucket brigade who had formed, screaming out "no" as the
fire, reflected in his eyes, consumed his family's house.
An icy voice rang out from across the street as he stumbled towards his house
"There he is, get him boys."
He sank to his knees in defeat, knowing his life was over. The burning of
his house and the killing of his family was too much. he lowered his head
into his hands and began to weep. From the shadows a figure detached itself
and ran to him as the thugs fought their way through the water throwing
brigade towards them. Soft hands reached around him, lifting him up,
coercing him forward.
"Come, we must go now, we will only have one chance." a soft feminine voice
said in a husky whisper. "Now!" she screamed, "Move, Damn you."
Stumbling to his feet, she half carried, half dragged him with her through
the streets of Neverwinter. They moved down an alley that ended abruptly in
a dead end. Her fingers flashed and the sound of stone grating on stone
echoing down the alley. The stone dead end slid slowly open. She pushed him
through the gaping hole following quickly on his heels.
The days passed in hiding for him. He became in enthralled by Tyrina, the
woman who saved him, and soon joined with her. He was inducted into the
Guild of Thieves as a novice and placed under her tutelage as she herself was
a master at the art. He learned to survive, to live in a capricious world,
always striving to be the best thief that ever had lived. They had given
him a second home and Tyrina, his ill fated lover who had saved him, brought
him into her world a baby, a world he would eventually leave, a master.
Taking with him only a name.... Veil.Spring Harvest
(submitted by: MuttC130)
The spring rains had come early to the realms. I stood in the forest one
mid-afternoon soaked to the bone. The steady rain had drenched my white
uniform, witch stood out in the now greening forest lands. Rain, cold and
chilling ran down the back of my neck. The dogs had stayed near the bunkhouse
knowing that today I must travel the woods alone. My goal was to seek out the
newly springing ashwoods which where starting to get buds on them.
Not a thing stirred in the forest every creature and bird was hold up
against the rain that had starting falling late last night. The only exeption
being the solo cherping of a tree frog giving off a shrill call letting the
forest now that indeed spring was close at hand.
I moved deeper into the forest, trodding along in the wet leaves strewn
across the forest floor. A sweet smell came to my nostrels and I looked up. A
tall dogwood tree reached for the heavens. Its glorioius branches in full
bloom. The white shroud covering its branches and giving it the apearance of
a bride ready to be wed to the forthcoming equanox. I delicatley reached up
and plucked a small branch to take back to the bunkhouse. It would make a
nice addition to the bunkhouse grounds once Primrose had a chance to nurcher
some roots from it. I wrapped wet leaves around the fresh break and placed it
in my pack then took a small dab of mud and covered the small gash of green
wood on the dogwood branch I had plucked the blossums from.
Continuing on I found what I had set out for. The mighty ash stood tall
covered in buds. It reached out its loving branches as if to hug all the
follage around it. I sat down cross legged near its trunk, then closed my
eyes and began a long meditation and prayer to the Lady of the Forest. I
contemplated my sins and asked forgivness for all wrong doings. I begged
parden for what I was about to do and promised to use the Ash's gift in honor
of the Forest. After many hours I stood and drew forth my bow. Digging in my
pack I found my bowstrings wrapped in thier oil cloth to stay dry and pulled
one out stringing on the bow. I then reached in my quiver and grabbed the
special prepaired arrow I had brought for the ceremony. Knocking it I drew
back on my ash bow and aimed for the heavens. I let the sacrifice fly far and
true. It ascended and vanished from sight. I unstrung the bow and secured it.
Then I drew forth a hand axe and waited.
The rain slowed and the glow of dusk started to break through the clouds.
Bright colors filled the sky reflecting from cloud to cloud as the sun
apeared on the horizon. Then a rainbow formed over the top of the Ash
crowning it in color and warmth. I took the hand axe and moved to a selected
branch. With a steady hand I made cuts and moved on to another. When I was
done with the third the sun had fallen and twilight filled the heavens. I
gathered the three branches from where they fell, and stripped them. Each was
the exact length of the bow strung across my back. And when they where done
they would be among the finest long bows crafted by this humble rangers
hands.
I gave thanx to Mieliki and covered the wounds on the tree before I set
out once again. The bunkhouse would be warm and I could use a dry set of
cloths. I could almost smell the mouth watering roast Holder eyes and Rad
Dragon stew that Thralos was talking about preparing before I set out on this
task.
Stars shown in the sky above and the tree frogs where in full song as the
lights from the bunkhouse apeared up ahead.

A Lake in the Woods
(submitted by: Thorn Hawk)
The inn was crowded this evening with many travelers stopping on their way to
Neverwinter as the snow began to melt and the roads began to clear. A fine
mist of smoke laid over the common room as people talked and ate and drank
while the innkeeper and his staff were hard pressed to keep up with the rowdy
bunch of mercenary guards that accompanied the merchant trains.
One figure, sitting alone, moved to the tiny stage in the corner near the
fireplace taking his sword off and placing it on his knees he sat upon the
stages' edge. All eyes turned toward this man thinking him a bard ready to
sing a risque song for their amusement and yet, they were not far off. He
was not a bard, this man dressed solely in black but for the green unicorn
head adorning his heart and the white fringes to his tunic at cuffs and
collar, but a story teller, a collector of knowledge, warrior and tonight he
had to earn his room and dinner by telling a tale since he had no money.
"Ye gonna sing us a song mister?" asked a rough looking man in leather armor,
an eye patch covering his left eye.
"Nay friend for I'm no singer, but a story I shall tell thee," replied Thorn
Hawk stroking the scabbard of his sword, "One of magic."
"Oh . .," cried a youth barely in his teens from the back, "I love stories of
mages and dragons."
Smiling, "nay lad," commented Thorn Hawk, "tis a story of spirits."
Stroking the scabbard of his sword, feeling the vines of thorn bushes that
adorned its surface, he began, "tis a story of two spirits and the magic that
changed their lives and bound them together on the shores of a solitary lake
far to the north." Feeling the thorns, his mind drifted back and he again
heard the clash of steel . . .
The sun had just begun to set when the clash of steel rang through the trees.
A small lake surrounded by tall pines dominated a clearing. Two figures
circled along its sandy shore their eyes never leaving the other as a
metallic clash echoed in the woods when their swords crossed. Breaking
apart, they weighed each other.
One, a beautiful woman in a lavender skirt wielding a long sword with ease.
Moving with the grace of a dancer, she circled her opponent and smiled. A
green stone, sparkling in the fading sun, sat upon her brow holding her long
brown hair away from her face.
The other, a man in a green tunic and black shirt circled her warily for he
knew her skill with that sword. His shoulder length blonde hair pulled back
in a ponytail for this fight. Only marginally taller, he moved with the
poise of a hunting cat. He too smiled as he came in for a cut to her
shoulder.
Blocking the swing with ease, she moved away. "Milord, ye spar well,"
Luthyen replied coming in for her own cut.
Grinning, he easily blocked her cut and a series of blows followed with
neither gaining an advantage over the other. "Thank you, milady," replied
Thorn Hawk.
Knowing the contest would soon have to end for the sun had set, Thorn
Hawk began a series of strokes driving Luthyen back. She countered with her
own, but was fooled when he riposted, slipping inside her guard, and slapping
the side of her ribs with his blade. Spinning away, he avoided her following
blade. Overbalanced from her swing, she slipped and fell into the freezing
waters of the northern lake.
"Milady," he said, rushing to help her from the water. "I did not mean
to get thee wet," he apologized.
"There is nothing to apologize for milord for it was my own fault," she
replied pulling herself from the water with his aid.
"But milady . . . ," he responded.
Cutting him off, "milord, twas not your fault for I agreed to this
contest."
Shivering, she headed back to their camp. Taking a blanket from his
pack, Thorn Hawk held it out for her to wrap herself in. Moving into his
arms, Thorn Hawk wrapped the blanket around her, feeling the contour of her
body. "Milady, thee should take off thy wet dress."
Nodding, she pulled the dress off, keeping the blanket tightly wrapped
around her body to ward of the chill air. "Her milady, tis a tunic for thee
to wear while thy dress dries," replied Thorn Hawk.
"Thank you, milord," she replied taking the offered tunic and slipping it
over her head.
"Milady, let me light a fire to warm thee," he said moving to start a
fire.
"That would be nice milord."
Shivering, Luthyen put on her cloak and moved toward a fallen log while
Thorn Hawk started a fire. As the fire blazed higher, shadows danced in the
pine trees surrounding the couple. Looking back, he noticed she was still
shivering. Moving next to her, he held out his arms spreading his own cloak.
"Tis all I have left to give thee warmth, but it's yours for the taking,
milady," he whispered, afraid of the answer yet hopeful.
Smiling, she hesitantly moved into his embrace seeking the warmth of his
body. "Thank you milord," she replied as her shivering seemed to lessen.
Resting her head on his shoulder, she quickly pulled away. "I don't wish
to get thee wet milord," she ventured seeing the puzzled look on his face.
Reaching up, he pushed her head back down to rest on his chest.
"Tis fine milady for a little water shall not harm me."
Selune rose to cast her silvery radiance on the lake, while the two
figures, sitting quietly in each other's arms, enjoyed the solitude and peace
of the night. Her shivering lessened as she snuggled deeper into his chest
feeling his warmth. He raised his hand to touch her cheek, but stopped
unable, unsure of her reaction. Catching his hand in her own, she laid it
against her cheek and smiles up at him. Gazing down into her brown eyes,
feeling the softness of her skin, he slid his hand up to brush away a strand
of chestnut colored hair from her brow revealing her green elfstone. Running
his hand through her silken tresses, she arched her head and moved deeper
into his embrace.
"Mmmmmmm," she mumbled deep within her throat.
His heart began to race as he felt her nearness. Desire welled up within
him as he held her delicate form and smelled the scent of apple blossoms from
her hair. Sliding his hand down her cheek and gazing deep within her eyes,
he softly, gently kissed her. Feeling the delicateness of her lips and hot
breath, he lingered sharing with her a part of himself, his soul. Smiling
gently, she looked up into his eyes as he broke the kiss, "mmmm . . .
milord," she whispered.
Returning the smile, he stoked her hair, moving it away from her face, so
he could peer at her beauty. They remained that way for sometime, content to
watch the fire and the stars each enjoying the closeness of the other. Dawn
was approaching when Luthyen broke the spell and rose to retrieve her dress.
Slipping on the now dry garment, she handed Thorn Hawk his tunic which he
stowed in his pack, but not before catching the scent of apple blossoms.
They had a long journey still ahead of them as they walked off into the
woods, heading for Neverwinter and castle stalker, holding hands while out on
the lake a loon greeted the morning with its mournful call . . .
He sat quietly a moment, his mind still rooted in the past, when the
sounds of the inn brought him back. Picking up his sword, he moved through
the quiet crowd barely causing a stir. The many travelers, some young, some
old, of various professions and yet, all of them had the same expression . .
. Wistful as they each thought of those they had loved or hoped to love one
day.

The Royal Guard of Arkani
(submitted by: WguardianJ)
PROLOGUE
This is a tale of five warriors. Each with a special destiny and one with a
hidden power. The power to destroy any evil being from the dark beyond.
Strangers now, but by destiny do their paths cross. It is the time of the
Dark Overlord's awakening from imprisonment long ago, and his vengence upon
his captors from ages ago. It is time for their long, perilous journey to
begin...
***
Sentri is the captain of the kings guard in the kingdom of Arkani. There
have been reports of children vanishing into thin air in the vilage of Ithor.
The king has called his guards to the palace for a meeting.....
"You are all well aware that the reports of young children dissappearing
right in front of their parents eyes.", the king said in a concerned voice.
"We cannot allow for this to continue, you are all hereby ordered to locate
the missing children and destroy the fiend that has caused us so much pain.
Sentri, I'm placing you in charge of locating the children and returning them
safely. Everyone, GO! "
Sentri, as head guard believed it best to start by searching the area from
whence the disappearances have been occuring, Ithor. Upon making the trip
with two of his trusty guardsman, they were greeted by the anguishing parents
of the anished children. "Please, help us!", the cried out to Sentri who
could do nothing else but assure them that he would find their children.
Ithor was a bustling town. Always filled with laughter, the songs of happy
people singing into the warm seasoned air, and the best INN that money could
buy a room for! The Village consisted of a pawn shop, Inn, houses...all with
children, a blacksmith, and a school where all the children learned reading,
writing, trade, and dreaming about becoming one of the Royal Guard. Only now
at lease a half of the children were taken leaving the town melloncholy and
depressed.
Sentri talked to the people of the village, the parents, the shop owners, the
teachers, students, even the people traveling on the road from Arkani to
Ithor, but to no avail.
Nightfall came. As Sentri and his comrades sprung for a room at the Inn,
another parent ran to Sentri, breathing heavily and pale as a ghost. "MY SON
HASN'T RETURNED!", she screamed at him. Just then a young boy walked through
the town gate sheepishly as if he knew he was in trouble. The mother ran to
her son and scooped him up into her arms and squeezed him tight. "WHERE HAVE
YOU BEEN? I WAS WORRIED SICK.", she said in a tender but firm voice into her
sons' ear. "I can't tell you, it's a secret", the boy said sheepishly with a
sly grin. Sentri overhearing this and suspecting something foul walked up to
the two and asked the mother to excuse them for a minute. The mother agreed
and walked around the corner. "Now young lad, I need to know where you just
were.", Sentri told the boy in a soft voice. "Uh, I can't tell you. It's a
secret. I gotta go now...my friends mother is expecting me.", the little boy
said in a frightened tone. "Son, I need to know where you've been secret or
not. It's a matter of life and death. How would you like it if you vanished
into thin air?", Sentri told the boy. "I got...gotta...go", he said as he
ran home. "No, let him go", Sentri said to his companions as they were about
to persue the litle boy. "We'll wait and follow him tomorrow". With that,
the Royal guards retired to the Inn for the night and awakened early in the
morning.
Bright and early the guards waited unseen outside the boy's house and watched
him go through the days rountine. He went from School, to recess, to shcool,
to....outside the town... Sentri told his companions to stay back at the
village and watch for anything suspicious as he followed the boy. The boy
walked a few hundred yards south of the village and then east into the woods.
Following closely behind, Sentri observed the boy arrive at a clearing with a
peculiar hole in the center. Suddenly, Sentri steeped on a twig creating a
loud *SNAP*. The boy's ears perked up and with that, he ran straight back to
the village. "Hmm...I wonder if this hole has anything to do with the recent
disappearances of the children.", Sentri thought to himself and without
hesitation, jumped feet first into the gaping hole. The cave looked like it
was freshly dug out, and placed strategically for a purpose. This disturbed
Sentri.
The cave stretched out in many directions and Sentri had no idea which way to
go. Just as he was about to move a voice could be heard from one of the
corridors. "COME TO Meeeeeeeeeee" and eerie voice called from the south. It
seemed a good enough direction as any to start so he followed the voice.
Every so often he would come to an intersection and again the voice would
call "COME TO Meeeeeeeeeee" and so he would go. Sentri was starting to grow
tired of walking down the corridors when he noticed a faint light around the
next turn. Curiosity getting the better of him, he snuck quietly around the
turn and was astonished to see a doorway...glowing with light. "COME INSIDE
MY CHILD....COME TO Meeeeee", the voice could be heard through the doorway.
"THIS IS IT! THE CHILDREN MUST HAVE DISAPPEARED THROUGH THIS DOORWAY!",
Sentri said outloud as he prepared to enter the doorway.
Upon entering the doorway, Sentri was greeted by two orcs and one ogress.
"YOU'RE NOT A CHILD!", the ogress yelled at Sentri. "KILL HIM! HE'LL RUIN
EVERYTHING!", she screamed at the orcsa as they all readied their weapons.
Startled, but not shaken, Sentri unsheathed his Broad Sword and took a
defensive stance to ward off the attackers. The orcs charged with swords at
hand but orcs are no match for a captain of the Royal Guard. With a quick
*SLASH* and *CHOP*, the orcs were cut and split in two. This did not please
the ogress as she raised a battle axe the size of Sentri and prepared to
attack. *CRASH*...the battle axe was swung in a verticle manner narrowly
missing Sentri and making a giant crack in the floor. entri made a quick
slashed the ogress in the leg. "ARRRRRRRRRRG", she screamed as she dropped
on one knee. *WHOOSH*, the axe flew horizontaly missing Sentri as he
narrowly ducked the deadly blade. Moving in for another strike, Sentri
slashed the remaining leg...."AHHHHHHHHHHH" *CRASH*, the ogress now screaming
in pain has fallen on both knees and is now eye level with Sentri. "You
don't know what you are up against....", she said as her strength began to
give out. "Braxus will ave....." *SLASH* *SLASH* *STAB*, the ogress is no
more. "Brxus..could this be who is behind the kidnappings?, Sentri said
himself as he searched the corpses of his foes. Salvaging a letter from the
pocket of the ogress, he read....
"All children must be destroyed. The hero is alive somewhere with the power
to destroy our master. We must find the Hero now while he is still weak and
destroy him. The time for evil, our masters awakening is at hand. Do not
fail."
Signed.......
...........*
Hmm...can't make out the signature.
Sentri pocketed the note and along with it, a map he found on the orcs of the
place he is. "According to the map....If I follow these stairs here....turn
here....go straight there...I should find the source of all this trouble",
Sentri thought as he wiped off his sword and proceded on his way.
Sentri followed the map to the letter, dispatching a few orcs here and there.
Finally reaching his destination, cries of young children could be heard from
the next room. Dashing into the room, Sentri was at awe with the sight of
all the missing children from the village of of Ithor. "LET ME GO! I WANNA
GO HOME". "SHUT UP YOU BRAT! ARE YOU THE HERO?". Sentri could see the
captors clearly now. The kids were being held by a....shadow? And a
creature that looked like a gremlin, but had the glimmer in his eye of magic.
"UNHAND THOSE CHILDREN, FIEND", Sentri shouted as he approached the evil
beings, Broad Sword raised. "You think you can defeat me? A mortal guard?",
the shadow monster said as the two of them shrieked with laughter. "LAST
WARNING MONSTER, LET THE CHILDREN GO OR BE DESTROYED!", Sentri yelled in a
firm voice. "You have no chance of survival mortal....Gorgo...DESTROY HIM!",
the shadowed ordered and the gremlin creature advanced...
"You don't really think you'll win, do you?" *VICEIN GUINE SRAIDNFA*, a bolt
of lightning shot out from the staff of the monster straight at Sentri.
"Ooof", Sentri belted as as the bolt nearly punched a hole through his chest.
"I've got to destroy that staff", Sentri thought to himself as he advanced
towards the monster. *VICEIN GUINE SRAIDNFA*, another bolt aimed at Sentri,
which luckily missed that time as he advanced upon the monster and overhead
chopped at the staff splitting it into two. "NOOOOOOO", the monster screamed
as he began to shrink in size. "you've destroyed my power!", the inch tall
being yelled at Sentri as he lifted his mighty boot and crushed it like a
bug.
"Is that the best you can do", Sentri addressed the shadow. "I was going to
save you the embarrassment of being utterly wiped from the face of the
universe but..SO BE IT!"
Darkness began to engulf the room, all was silent, all was still, all was
black as night! "PREPARE TO DIE FOOLISH MORTAL!" Sentri could swear the
voice was coming from all around him.
"ACK", a sharp sting could be felt on Sentri's back. "ARGH", a hard jab
could be felt going through his chest, through his insides, and out his back
like a penetrating spear of a knoll. "Wha....*CRASH*", Sentri fell to the
ground. "FULMIN, CORPUS HOLENDUS".....Sentri felt his his body go numb.....
he couldn't move....losing consciousness......*ZIIIIIIIIIIIIP*, Two flaming
arrows shot across the room and lodged themselves into the back wall
illuminating the area with a soft glow. *FWOOSH*, torches were lit and
tossed into the room. "NOOOOOOOO, NOT THE LIGHT......CAn't sur..vive.....
must.... ha..ve..... dar...k..ne.s.s.........." Sentri's comrades stormed
the room, torches in hand. The feeling started to return to Sentri as the
darkness dissipated into the light. "I..found the..children", Sentri said
groggily to his companions as they helped him up. "Didn't I tell you to stay
at the village?", Sentri said jokingly as he patted his friends on the back.
Freeing the children from their cells, the trio returned them to their
families with a hearty cheer and returned home to Arkani where they recieved
a heroes welcome...
"CONGRATULATIONS Sentri! JOB WELL DONE! We all owe you a great debt.", the
king announced outloud to the entire court, everyone applauded. "I live but
to serve my liege", Sentry replied.
"You deserve a reward, name it, it's yours"
"I have but one request", sentri hands the letter he confiscated from the
monsters to the king, "I want to leave Arkani in search of this young hero
and protect him from the evil that wants to destroy him while he is young and
helpless. If the Evil Master is anything like the monsters I've faced today,
then he may be our only hope for survival".
Looking pleased at Sentri's request, the King replied...
"Of course you may go. Find this young hero and protect him so that when the
time arises, the world will be safe and all the evils will be destroyed.
Also, Take this" The King stands and unsheathes his sword and hands it to
Sentri. "It's been in my family for many generations. Believed to have great
powers, greater than I've ever seen. Made of the strongest elements on this
land...use it well and it will serve you as you have served me, faithfully,
and flawlessly."
With all said and done, Sentri bows to the King and waves the court a hearty
goodbye.......

Bruno had been having a tough time of things lately. Between the
numerous esp's of "Doncha have any maps Squire?" and the screeches of the
evil beholders as they cut him down time and time again, be was beginning to
think about using a staple gun to attach a big sign that said: NEWBIE right
on smack dab in the middle of forehead... Fighting down the urge, the Squire
put the staplegun away, and decided that he would just have to learn that
maps can be fun, even if it cheapens the experience of figuring things out
for himself. Sighing heavily, as Bruno had always been one to be a true male
and never ask for directions even if he was lost, he opened up the case in
which he keeps his scrolls of maps hidden. Surveying the maps for all of two
to three seconds, the noble Squire became disgusted with his intensive study
and promptly threw them all in the nearby trash-can just outside of Striders.
Walking inside he takes a seat at the bar, orders a drink, and has the usualy
chat session with Strider about the wrongs in the world. Strider listens
intently, paying attention and occasionaly refilling the Squire's mug, but
alas, Strider is not the conversationalist that Bruno would have him be.
After paying his tab, (which nearly bankrupted him) and tipping Strider for
his wonderful service, (which did bankrupt me!), Bruno headed back out to
venture to Camelot and see which of his brothers and sisters were around. He
soon is hailed from afar by Sir Lerick, who is in Longsaddle with Giantklr,
Vinnie, and Paddy! With utmost haste, Bruno speeds of the vaults, pulls out
some measely +2 pole-arm that an aunt had given him for Tyrmas, and
immeadiately pawned it off for money to take the Griffon flight to Triboar
with.
After working his way through the muck and slime, living and non-living, that
is found in the Sewers, he at last arrives at the Erickson family enterprise
and contributes to their already expanding wealth. The meal on the flight
was poor as usual, and the hostess did spill a beverage on his shirt sleeve,
but Bruno was happy to be on his way to his Brothers who were awaiting him in
Longsaddle! Departing the flight, Bruno turned and waved to the Stewardess,
who had been giving him some much needed female attention, and then
resolutely and bravely set forth to reach Longsaddle. Stopping in to a shop
in Berun, he visited the aunt who gave him the pole-arm just to tell her that
he had sold it and boy was she upset! Her and two sisters immediately
attacked the astounded Squire, but were beat back by his mighty +1 mace!
Bruno also made excellent use of his mirrored shield to make his aunts see
just how ugly they had become and in the end, they were all sobbing that they
could have been so insensitive to Bruno's needs. He quickly forgave them,
said his goodbyes, and continued on to Longsaddle. Arriving at the inn with
only a few minor encounters with some CG Shamans who wanted to play some
soft-ball, Bruno sits again at the bar and waits for his friends to arrive
from the beholders below. They all finally arrive and we set off to meet
with the Lady G0nesha, whom Bruno holds in the highest regards, when all of
sudden, Bruno is knocked out of his saddle by a strange beeping box on a
black sort of rope that ends in a nearby wall. Drawing swords, the
companions stand united to face this enemy, but Bruno holds up his hand to
stay their swords. "Wait my friends! I know this beast! It is a most
cunning and relentless foe, we shall not triumph if we attack the famed ALARM
CLOCKATRICE! It is my time to depart these Realms, for the ALARM CLOCKATRICE
comes only at a time of urgent need in that other realm know as OOC. Bruno
bravely made ready then stepped forward. "I am ready foul beast. Take me
where I am needed!" and so saying the CLOCKATRICE stepped forward and sped
the Squire off to OOC and the foul over-lord beast, WORK!!!!!!!

The great library in Menzoberranzan was a monolithic structure, encompassing
five floors of material, neatly organized according to subject. It was
singularly unique among buildings which performed the same function
throughout the realms. It owed its excellence mainly to its designer and
first great archivist, Yathrin Lasharra Eilservs, who had been dead for
nearly four thousand years.
As time had passed, the library had risen in prominence in the city and it
became increasingly more difficult for the city's non-noble population to
even be allowed into its vicinity. It was certainly unknown for a kobold
rothe to be sitting on the steps of the library on any occasion.
So, it was with no small sense of amazement that Suvantar stared down at the
clean, well-dressed creature who was seated patiently on the steps,
apparently awaiting someone's departure from the library. The kobold was
receiving hostile stares from many of the other passers-by, but Barrison
Del'Armgo's weapons master was more curious than anything else.
He walked up the steps, seventy-seven in all, to where the kobold was
sitting. The small humanoid looked up at his arrival and bowed low to the
ground before returning to his previous posture. Suvantar was slightly
amused.
"Vendui', little fellow, " he stated with a slight smile.
The kobold looked back at him with surprise. Generally he was not even
acknowledged by any of the drow, not to mention addressed in any fashion. And
when he was addressed, it was certainly not with any sense of politeness at
all... save for his mistress.
So, though he was a bit insulted at being addressed as 'little fellow', Nang
replied, "Vendui', malla Saruk."
Suvantar arched an eyebrow. The creature knew the insignias of the drow well
enough to recognize his pendant of office. Apparently there was more here
than met the eye. The kobold was not garbed in the colors of any of the
houses in Menzoberranzan. Perhaps he was a visiting dignitary from the
surface.
"This might not be a good place for you to rest, " he offered. "The palace
guards tend to police this area heavily. If they see you here, they might
haul you off to the dungeons in the Arach-Tinilith or worse."
The kobold reached into his belt pouch and withdrew a small scroll, "I would
show them this."
Suvantar took the scroll and read it. The document was a message to any who
might harass the kobold servant who, coincidentally enough, appeared to
belong to the yathrin who he was coming to escort. It stated that she had
received permission for him to wait here and that any attempt to detain or
injure him would be looked unfavorably upon by House Fey-Branche of Rilauven.
"Does she honestly expect this to have any effect on those who might wish you
ill?" he asked.
Nang offered him a toothy smile, "Probably not. But it is vital that she
complete her research, therefore it is a necessary thing."
Suvantar introduced himself. Nang did the same. They stood like that for a
minute, briefly uncomfortable in the manner of two who instinctively like
each other, but recognize that a huge barrier between the two existed.
Neither offered his hand to the other, though both had felt a brief desire to
do exactly that.
But Nang was a rothe, no matter how articulate, clean, competent or engaging
he might first appear.
Finally, Suvantar cut the conversation short, "Well, the Malla Ilharess has
instructed me to find your mistress and escort her back to the Qu'ellar. I
will return with her momentarily."
Nang nodded and returned to his spot on the steps and drew some more hostile
attention from the drow scholars passing by. He bowed to them all and
attempted to be as inconspicuous as possible.
Suvantar entered the library.
***
It was required of every visitor to the library that he or she enter his name
into the registry, as well as the subject of his or her research and the
areas of the library to be utilized. As the Ul'Saruk of House Barrison
Del'Armgo, it was relatively easy for Suvantar to gain access to the registry
and determine that Angilynne Fey-Branche was researching obscure history
texts in one of the many sub-levels of the library.
He wandered for awhile before coming across her in an out of the way alcove,
sitting at a table surrounded by large stacks of dusty old texts. So
engrossed in her work was she that she did not immediately notice his
arrival. He was able to take a long look at her before she heard his
approaching footsteps and turned her attention his way.
She was fairly small for a drowess and very thin, almost gaunt. She had an
almost ethereal air about her, an air which he could not immediately
identify... an almost palpable sense of... elamshim. She was not dressed in
the elegant robes of a yathrin, but in a loose, baggy kind of garb that was
more conducive to sitting in a library and staring at books for hours on end.
When she looked up at him, she neither scowled nor favored him with a lewd
stare, the two most frequent appearances of yathrinen in his experience.
Angilynne, rather, gave him a brief curious glance then dismissed him an
returned to the text in front of her. She only looked up again when his
footsteps stopped in front of her and he was dropping to a knee to honor his
house's distinguished guest.
He was about to greet her with all of the politeness and grace he could
muster when her low chuckle interrupted him. He glanced up in surprise and
saw her lavender eyes twinkling down at him from over the top of the book she
held in front of her. He wondered if somehow he was the cause of her levity.
"Errr..., " he stammered, "vendui', malla yathrin. I have been sent to escort
you to the Qu'ellar Barrison Del'Armgo."
She set the book down and he got his first clear view of her face. She was...
pretty, he saw. Not sexy, as many drowesses were. Not seductive or striking
or captivating, but... pretty. That suprised him also. Not many yathrinen had
enough innocence or general civility left within them to look pretty.
Her brief amusement passed without explanation and she studied him
momentarily, then nodded, "I see I am running behind schedule as I normally
am. I will gather my things and we can depart as soon as possible."
Suvantar nodded, realizing that it had been quite awhile since he had even
thought about the sword drills he was missing at the compound while he ran to
fetch this yathrin, "At your leisure, malla yathrin."
She motioned for the lone wizened, ancient archivist who worked in this
particular sub-level over and they engaged in a brief discussion while she
gestured at all of the texts on the tables and he waved vaguely in the
direction of one of the many study carrels. Finally, she nodded and walked
back over to the weapons master of Barrison Del'Armgo. The archivist looked
at the large stacks of books in the background, then heaved a heavy sigh and
began lugging them toward the study carrel.
"We must also retrieve my manservant, " she observed as they began to the
long trek up the stairs. "He is waiting outside the library."
"The kobold Nang, " he replied.
She gave him a sidelong look, "You met him?"
"He was rather hard to miss, malla yathrin, " he stated.
That drew a slight smile. As they came to the doorway, he reached in front of
her to open it for her and came very close to touching her. He looked at her
sharply at her hiss of in-drawn breath and drew his arm back quickly in
surprise.
"My apologies, malla yathrin, " he said, quickly, though, in all
truthfulness, he was not entirely sure what he was apologizing for, "I did
not mean to offend you."
She shook her head briefly and her hand fluttered down to her side, where for
the first time, he noted, he saw a silver flute hanging from a traveling belt
case. He was curious about it, but said nothing further as she steadied
herself and motioned for him to continue as before.
He opened the door for her and they went through.
***
Nang was at the same spot he had been before, still drawing wrathful looks,
though fewer now due to the advancing hour. Suvantar also noted a couple of
the ornamentally armored palace guardsmen standing a few steps below the
kobold and regarding him with great suspicion and little malicious glee as
the anticipated 'interrogating' him.
He chuckled and walked forward.
One of the guardsmen recognized him immediately and his lip drew back in
distaste. It had been well know a few years before that Suvantar Barrison
Del'Armgo had been given the singular honor of being invited into their
number. It was said that this offer was extended to only a few in any given
generation and it was totally unheard of that anyone refuse.
Suvantar had done so, choosing to remain in his current position.
His rationale had been fairly simple. Survival among the yathrinen of
Barrison Del'Armgo was difficult enough for him. He could not imagine what it
would be like to try to remain in the good graces of the Valsharess herself.
He would be dead within weeks when his mouth ran away from him.
The guardsman he approached had also been a compatriot of Kanazan Baenre in
the Melee-Magthere. He and Suvantar had crossed swords before and the
Ul'Saruk of Barrison Del'Armgo had never lost. So, it was with no small
amount of loathing that his approach was observed.
His smiled widely at the two guardsmen and stopped before them without saying
a word.
The other guardsman was older and did not know Suvantar other than by
reputation. He said nothing, Kanazan's former compatriot, whose name escaped
Suvantar at that point in time, took a step forward in a slight posture of
challenge. Barrison Del'Armgo's visiting dignitary watched the unfolding
scene calmly and said nothing.
"A little outside of your little demesne, are you not, Barrison Del'Armgo?"
the guardsman sneered.
Suvantar smiled, "I am sure you patrol this path daily. You have not seen me
before, have you?"
He implied, of course, that no matter how much prestige came with the
appointment of being among the Valsharess' Guard, they remained little more
than foot soldiers and peacekeepers. The guardsman's gaze darkened
considerably. The older guardsman smiled slightly. He had been among the
Guard for so long that he was immune to such petty insults. He had heard it
all before.
The younger guardsman took another step forward, prompting Suvantar to say,
"I would not do that if I were you. You will force me to kill you and I am
sure the Valsharess would not be pleased with either of us, should that
occur."
The guardsman's sword was almost out of its sheath when the firm restraining
hand of his partner was felt on his arm. He glared at the older drow, who
stared flatly back at him.
"When or lose, if you draw on a citizen, you will be dismissed."
Without saying anything further, he stepped back and let his partner make his
own decision. Emotions warred within the younger drow. He stared up at the
smirking face of the Ul'Saruk of Barrison Del'Armgo and seethed. He knew that
he had bestowed a great deal of honor on his house, a relatively low one in
the scope of the city by reaching this rather lofty position. Years of
toadying up to the likes of Kanazan Baenre would be lost and forgotten,
should he fly out of control and attack the Ul'Saruk of Barrison Del'Armgo.
He slid his sword back into its sheath and stomped away. The other guardsman
followed him laconically, leaving the other three on the steps. Nang fell in
behind Angilynne who walked over to Suvantar with a look of curiosity on her
face.
"Why did you do that?"
"That was the Valsharess' Guard, " he stated, watching their receding forms.
"They'd taken an interest in your kobold and I figured if you brought him all
the way here from Rilauven, you might want to keep him."
"I see, " she replied. "You believe that they were going to arrest him?"
That drew a chuckle from him, "Arrest him? No, malla yathrin, they were not
going to arrest him. They were, in all likelihood, going to use him for sport
and discard him, claiming later, if questioned at all about the event, which
is doubtful, that they were merely ridding the Library steps of a loiterer."
Angilynne frowned momentarily and opened her mouth, doubtless to explain to
him about the note she had left with Nang. Then she saw that he knew about it
and closed her mouth again with a brief nod. She understood. She gestured in
the direction of Barrison Del'Armgo.
The return to the compound was blessedly uneventful.

In Menzoberranzan, it was a very rare thing indeed for a member of any other
race than a drow to own anything, especially a place of business. One of the
lone exceptions to this very hard and fast rule is the restaurant Kelegor's,
owned currently by four human brothers. It had been started by their
great-great-great-grandfather nearly two hundred years before and had
achieved some degree of status, though short-lived in drow terms, as a
fixture of Menzoberranzan society.
In the two hundred years of the restaurant's existence, its primary clientele
had fluctuated periodically. Its prices fluctuated similarly and reflected
the current primary clientele. At times, it had achieved nearly elite status
and the price of a single meal could reach almost ten platinum pieces. At
other times, it was more frequently a watering hole and a stopover for the
city's tremendous workforce of common drow and other laborers. At those times
meals could be bought for as little as a single gold piece.
At this time, it was most commonly frequented by merchants and sargtlinen of
noble houses. Meals generally ran about two platinum pieces or thereabouts.
Whatever its current clientele, Kelegor's invariably thrived and it was
unheard of for assassinations to take place in its confines.
It was, therefore, the favorite restaurant of Zykinnus, the master and leader
of the Crimson Watch.
Zykinnus had once been a housed sargtlinen, but had been disowned by his
house following one of his many legendary romantic escapades. He had
immediately joined up with a burgeoning mercenary band called the Crimson
Watch and had assumed leadership of the group after about twenty years. Under
his guidance, the Watch had grown from being simply another of the throng to
its current stature.
Zykinnus had realized early on that, despite the presence of the Valsharess'
Guard and the like, there was no organized peacekeeping force within the city
that protected the merchant houses and smaller noble houses. The great noble
houses, of course, had their private armies. He had decided that this was a
perfect niche for the Crimson Watch to fill.
Mez Bel'Arm had watched the steady growth of the Crimson Watch during the
hundred years that followed and, when it had finally grown large enough in
stature, invited Zykinnus into her household. By this time, he had grown
quite used to his independence and was somewhat reluctant to agree at first,
but he quickly realized that if one of the great houses had taken notice of
his organizations and how large it had grown, it was inevitable that the
others would do the same. Eventually, he would even draw the attention of
mighty Baenre and that would, in all probability, be the end of him and the
Crimson Watch.
House Baenre did not look favorably upon any potential challenger to it
supremacy.
Barrison Del'Armgo, therefore, nearly doubled the size of its potential
forces with the addition of Crimson Watch forces, though, technically, most
of them were free mercenaries and simple hired guards who could not match the
expertise of a fully trained sargtlin. More importantly, the house also
achieved another more potent weapon.
By this time, nearly all the of commoners in the city and most of the
merchant and small noble houses, utilized the Crimson Watch in one way or
another. Barrison Del'Armgo received no small degree of influence over all
them when it absorbed the Watch by housing Zykinnus. Simply the threat of the
Watch's withdrawal of peacekeeping forces was usually enough to ensure that
Barrison Del'Armgo received the best goods and services for premium prices.
And, of course, the tacit recognition that, in the event of a house war,
these merchants and lower houses would throw their support to Barrison
Del'Armgo.
It had taken Baenre some time to recognize what Mez had done and by the time
it had finally happened, it could not effectively act without a full blown
house war. The private army of Barrison Del'Armgo protected the Watch and the
Watch, in turn, gave security to Barrison Del'Armgo's forces.
Zykinnus stood in the crux of it all, wondering, at times, how it was that he
had suddenly become such an important individual.
He was possibly the largest drow in the entire city. He stood nearly six feet
eight inches tall and weighed almost two hundred and thirty pounds. His hair
reached nearly down to his back and was generally tied back from his eyes.
His status as a warrior, (and his ego), was almost as large. Few other
warriors, such as Suvantar Barrison Del'Armgo, in the entire city were as
well respected as a single combatant.
There had been some inevitable comparisons between Zykinnus and the leader of
the other huge mercenary band in Menzoberranzen, Jarlaxle, jabbuk of the
Bregan D'Aerthe, but he did not see that many similarities between him and
the bald drow. First and foremost, Jarlaxle was bald. Second, he was much
smaller than Zykinnus. Third, he definitely was not as good-looking as he,
Zykkinus, was. And finally, the two organizations did not perform the same
functions in the city.
When Jarlaxle was asked the same questions, he responded in much the same
manner, except, of course, he was much better looking than Zykinnus.
Zykinnus knew that a member of the Crimson Watch probably could not stand up
to a member of the Bregan D'Aerthe, but that was not what the Crimson Watch
was there to do. The Crimson Watch was there to keep the peace and provide
security for the common classes, not to win private wars for houses and not
to provide mercenary services. It had a plethora of other functions, but to
all intents and purposes, a member of the Crimson Watch simply did not
require the same degree of training and experience that a member of the
Bregan D'Aerthe required.
And actually, though they did not run across each other very often, the two
mercenary leader rather liked each other and got along fairly well.
When Zykinnus had first been adopted into Barrison Del'Armgo, there were many
who believed that a rivalry between and him and Suvantar was inevitable. They
were sorely disappointed when the rivalry never emerged. Partially because
they were so like-minded in many ways, but mostly because neither of them
like being predictable in any way... the inevitable rivalry instead became at
first a grudging respect for one another, then something so alien in drow
society that no one really knew what to call it.
In human, dwarven or elven societies, it would be clear immediately. Deep
friendship.
Even Suvantar and Zykinnus did not quite no what to make of their
relationship. Each enjoyed the company of the other immensely and deep inside
each would admit that he would probably battle formidable odds to protect the
other. Neither, of course, would admit that to the other to his face. That
was simply unheard of in Menzoberranzen.
Zykinnus' size also allowed him a few luxuries that few other drow possessed.
Because he was so intimidating physically, he could afford to be relatively
good-natured and get away with it. He was rarely seen without a large smile
creasing his handsome features. It was said that no fewer than twenty
yathrinen around the city enjoyed the services of the big drow at any given
time.
He had been invited into to no less than six minor houses in the position of
ilharn, but had steadfastly refused each invitation, quite enjoying his
position in Barrison Del'Armgo. There were rumors, also, that his position
within the house might be elevated upon Kinayne's ascension, but thus far,
nothing had crystallized of that. It was an ill-kept secret that he and the
current ilharess had enjoyed relations together for years.
At times, Zykinnus did not know what to make of his smaller companion.
Suvantar smiled so rarely and at times seemed to be such a flat individual
that one of Zykinnus' favorite past times was needling the weapons master to
see if he could get a rise out of him. It was a rare occurrence, but
sometimes he managed it. If Suvantar was in a particularly good mood,
sometimes Zykinnus could even draw him out and get him to banter with him.
But mostly, Zykinnus, being a natural study in the drowish condition,
realized how deeply his violent upbringing and devious and underhanded house
situation had affected his younger companion. It was at these times that the
big drow inwardly profusely thanked his old matron mother for dismissing him
from his old house. At times his companion would show some flash of the
emotions he obviously felt, but at most times, his face remained an impassive
mask.
The big drow felt a twinge of real sorrow at that.
As they sat in Kelegor's during the week following Angilynne's arrival in
Menzoberranzan, he noted that his companion seemed a little more distracted
and distant than usual. His attempts to bait Suvantar had failed miserably.
His attempts to draw him into conversation had met with little success.
Finally, having finished his lunch minutes before and tired of watching the
smaller weapons master pick at the food on his plate, Zykkinus decided he was
bored with the whole thing.
He resorted to good-natured obnoxiousness and began to lob uneaten beans with
his fork at his friend across the table. Suvantar's eyes flickered up just as
one caught him dead in the forehead. He reached slowly up and removed the
offending vegetable and placed it down on his plate.
Looking around, he saw several of the Crimson Watch commander's troops
regarding the scene with no little amusement. With an exasperated sigh, he
hissed, "Can you please stop acting like a child."
Zykinnus' everpresent grin widened further, "Ah, but acting like a child has
accomplished what my attempts at civil conversation have not."
"And that is?" Suvantar demanded, attempting not to be drawn into a debate he
was destined to lose. Not because of the force of Zykinnus' logic, but rather
his ability to blur the topic to the point of unrecognizability.
"They have gotten your attention, " Zykinnus chuckled. "Now, tell me of the
foreign yathrin."
Suvantar smiled slightly at his friend's naked lust and shook his head. He
had little doubt that Zykinnus could probably charm Angilynne into bed with
some effort, but recalling what he had seen of the visitor from Rilauven, he
kind of hoped his friend would fail this once.
"What of the malla ilharess?" he smirked. "Does she not have sole claim to
your services at the moment?"
Zykinnus' expression left him with no doubt as to what the large drow thought
of anyone having sole claim to his services. They both chuckled.
Zykinnus smiled, "Actually, Suv... if you wish this one for yourself..."
Suvantar shook his head, "Don't you think it's a bit disrespectful to talk
about the yathrinen as if they were toys to be exchanged?"
Zykinnus burst out laughing, "Bah... they use me like a beast and have no
care about my comings and goings. I would think they wouldn't care much about
the yammerings and gossip of us mere males anyway."
Suvantar had to laugh at that as well. "Probably true. Just keep out of the
hearing range of the malla ilharess. She will whip the flesh from your bones
if she hears you speak like that."
Zykinnus snorted in disgust, "Actually, I think that's something she reserves
for you."
Suvantar nodded ruefully, feeling a slight twinge in his back where the scabs
were finally beginning to heal. Zykkinus watched him for a moment, angry that
his friend should have to undergo such idiocy from his own family, but
knowing he was in no position to stop it.
"So, " he repeated, loudly, for the benefit of his eavesdropping employees,
"tell me of the foreign yathrin, Suv. Is she curved in the proper places?"
His eyes gleamed lustfully again, hiding whatever thoughts had been traveling
through his mind moments before and, with his insistence, eventually ground
down his friend's natural respect for females. The outcome, as always, was
never in doubt.
Suvantar told him about Angilynne.

Journal Entry - Season of Winter, The 8th day of March
Today is my 13th birthday. My Mentor and friend, Zykon Bronzeshield, has
asked that I begin this journal now that I am old enough to understand the
world (whatever that means). Don't know what I should be writing in here??
Guess I should begin with who I am? My name is Geminia Steele, I was named
after my grandfather on my mothers side Gemini Rondorian. My father is the
Baron Harold of Triangelica, a small land holding of His Lordship in
Waterdeep located north of Crossergate and Luskan, and my loving and lovely
mother is named Tukoma. I have two older brothers (who I hate). The eldest is
named Harold II and the next in line of succession is Jericho. I have one
younger sister named Turokoma who I hate more than my brothers. My best
friend in the whole world is Zykon. He is an incredible Elven Hunter who has
taught me the ways of the Ranger and Hunting. Not sure how old he is, he just
says he is young for his people (they live a long time I guess?). That's
enough writing for today. Oh, almost forgot. My father gave me this great
Elven bow fer my birthday and Zykon is going to take me hunting tomorrow.
Journal Entry - Season of Winter, The 9th day of March
Still don't know what to right in this dumb thing but Zykon insists that I
keep it??? I guess I could write about my day of hunting with my new bow.
Spent most of the day tracking something (Zykon wouldn't tell me) and never
found it. I thought Zykon was better than that. I wanted to shoot my bow at
something instead of just target practice. Zykon is meeting with my farther
now, going to try and sneak into the alcove and see if I can hear what they
are talking about.
Journal Entry - Season of Winter, The 12th day of March
Darned Journal. Zykon found out I wasn't writing in this dumb thing and is
now watching over my shoulder while I write. Well, I might as well write
what I did today. Zykon had me training all day with a sword and shield
(what good are they when hunting?). Guess something big is coming, father and
his councelors have been meeting fer days. I hate it because my brothers get
to go to the meetings but I don't. Oh well, going to go and try to sneak
into the meeting room.
Journal Entry - Season of Spring, The 21st day of March
The Spring Festival has been a big success. My father declared today a
Holiday fer all and has even released some prisoners in good will. My father
is very generous. He has stopped meeting with his councilors and dispatched
his fastest couriers to His Lordship in Waterdeep. Seems this mystery will
have to wait.
Alas a greater mystery has come upon me, girls?? I think sometimes they are
daft. There is one specific one, the daughter of a respected merchant, who
won't leave me alone. Been spending most of my free time hiding from her
rather than enjoying the Festival. Will have to ask Zykon what he thinks.
Journal Entry - Season of Spring, The 28th day of April
Father has become worried. The messengers that he dispatched to His Lordship
in Waterdeep have not been heard from. He is discussing with his councilors
now about sending an envoy of my brother Jericho and some of the High Guard
to Waterdeep. My brothers have all the fun. Zykon has stepped up my training
in both arms and armor. Don't mind too much except when the weather becomes
tepid. The mood around here has become increasingly dark. Can not help but
believe something is wrong. Zykon won't tell me anything but continues to
comment that it is none of my concern and should concentrate on my training.
Journal Entry - Season of Summer, The 25th day of June
Word has reached us that my brother Jericho barely made Waterdeep with only
two of the fifteen of the High Guard with him. Kraken spies seem to be
behind the attack and probably behind the missing couriers. No one knows why
the Kraken Society from Neverwinter would be involved. Father has begun an
extensive search of our household and surroundings. Everyone is in a state
of panic behind these reports. Father has asked that Zykon begin my training
as a Paladin like my brothers. Fear of my brother being hurt in that attack
has caused my father great sadness. Not sure why, Zykon believes that we
are closer to throne of Waterdeep than most believe. If that is true, than
father is worried about successors.
Journal Entry - Season of Summer, The 2nd day of July
Things have seemed to settle down a bit. Jericho is returning from Waterdeep
with an escort of the Royal Guard and will be home within a few weeks. Very
little has been discovered of the involvement from the Kraken Society. That
crazy girl continues to harass me and cannot seem to escape her. She makes
me feel funny though and Zykon has asked me to meet him later for an
explanation of these feelings.
Journal Entry - Season of Summer, The 3rd day of July
Illllll! Zykon has explained to me the responsibilities of men and women.
Now I am trying even harder to stay away from that crazy girl.
Journal Entry - Season of Winter, The 25th day of December
This winter has been harsh. An illness has descended on our town and many
are suffering. Mother has been trying to help as much as possible with the
ill. Father is worried about her and for all the people. The illness has
also affected the crops and will have a poor harvest in the spring. This has
caused my father great distress and has asked for help from the surrounding
lands and from Waterdeep. What a bad way to celebrate the birth of our Lord
Savior.

Journal Entry - Season of Winter, The 2nd day of January
Why, why, why!!! Why did she have to help them. Why did she have to die. I
hate everybody. I hate this stupid journal.......
In the year of our Lord, Nineteen-Hundred-Eighty-Six
Journal Entry - Season of Winter, The 8th of March
It is my 16th birthday today. I make this my final entry. Since the
passing of my mother I have become uncomfortable in this my home. Alas, the
toll of all that's happened and the death of my mother has also affected my
father. He has fallen ill and is being helped by the Clerics of Tyr. They
say he will be well again but that his spirit has become weak. My brother
Harold has taken over responsibilities to govern. I have asked to be excused
from court and wish to travel. I hope to learn something of the realms and
of myself. Everyone has asked me to stay, no more so than my beloved sister
Turokoma. I cannot bear looking at her sometimes because of her strong
resemblance to my mother. Zykon has only expressed that I remember all that
he has taught me. I therefore say farewell to my home and begin my travels.

(submitted by: Mutt C130)
The moon was just peeking over the horizon, its beems sending swaths of
light across the clearing where it flowed through the tree branches. Small
sparklings of the rays could be seen dancing on the streem giving dance to
the melody of the little stream near the clearing. I had just left the
bunkhouse early enough to get to the clearing before the moon started its
assent into the starlit sky. Half the night was gone already when I had
awaken from my bunk, hearing the call of the tree frogs in the late winter
night chirping thier mating calls in rethum to the soft gurggles of the
water. The night air was warm and comfortable a sure pleasure to take a
stroll in, so I had set out for the small clearing to enjoy such a moment in
Mieliki's glory. I had not bothered to dress leaving the bunkhouse in only my
trousers. A soft breeze played across my skin as I sat there and the newly
green grass was comfortable and cool under my bare feet.
I closed my eyes and inhaled deeply the fresh sents of spring in the air.
Then when I opened them after long moments I saw a figure slowly walking down
the path from the bunkhouse. As she got closer a slight smile played along my
lips and my heart skipped a beat, for when she aproached the end of the path
the moonlight revealed DJ's face slightly dreamy eyed and smiling as she to
took in the night pleasures of the woods. Realizing that I was holding my
breath I let it out slowly when her green eyes, sparkling in the moonlight
turned and saw me watching her there. I smiled again noticing that she had
not bothered to dress either. Coming down to the stream in her linen night
shift, tiny bare feet sticking out from underneith with toes curling in to
the dew covered grass with each step. Her beauty took my breath away as she
aproached, the moonbeems highlighting her long flowing hair and outlining her
body in the flaxen vestment she wore.
She aproached me, neither of us speeking a word for fear of breaking the
nights spell. As she sat down next to me and I placed my arms around her
holding her close. Her hug was soft and curessing drawing me into her warmth.
I burried my face in her long tresses and inhaled deeply taking in her
fragrance, fresh as the forest night.
We both sat and listened to the night sounds around us waiting for the
moon to clear the horizon, and as it did we shared a brief kiss to celibrate
the glory of its coming into the night sky. We sat arm and arm for long
moments listening to the stream, to the light breeze playing through the tree
branches, we even heard the howl of a distant wolf welcoming the moon to the
realms. The stars shown down upon us, each one twinkling in its joy at our
company.
At length I stood and held out my hand to help her up. She placed her soft
hand in mine and stood leaning in for another kiss. Our lips touched softly
and then we turned and walked into the night hand in hand wandering along the
stream bed.
The tree frogs sounded louder in the clearing as we left wandering in the
night caring for not but each others company...............

no doubt testing his ability to adapt and roll with the blows aimed at him.
So be it. She had changed the arena, told her tales all at once, landing all
of them with much more feeling than he could ever have garnered in a single
story... probably in all three of his planned anecdotes he grumbled to
himself. So much for her taking it easy on him.
He stood, nodding to Raish. Her face remained grim and stoic, a follow
through to her tales. Her eyes, normally soft with compassion and happiness,
lacked something McD could not place; almost as if she was waiting for
something. He would have to call on all of his knowledge to weave a story
worthy of earning her respect. Taking a deep breath, he began.
"Tales o 'onor an' wisdom remain... an' as the rules seem ta 'ave
shifted on me..." McDonough started with a crooked grin. He expected to see
his half-smile reflected in his listener's eyes. What he saw was different.
Raishtal was listening as intently as possible...eyes growing distant only
once in awhile and never for more than a moment. McDonough, taken aback,
paused but continued. "I tol' ye before o me second pack... I grew close to
tha remainin' members after tha death o Stephen.
"There comes a time, tho', in everyone's existance, when tha past
catches up ta ye," he started, getting comfortable in the mounting story. As
he did so, the wind shifted slightly. McDonough paused, the newfound
direction of the wind bringing with it a scent... a scent of taint... a scent
of death being dealt and received. Raishtal's eyes slipped closed. The touch
of the wind was a caress to him. For Raish, something quite different--that
breeze seemed to be awakening pains in places that were stilled before
because they were shielded. McD considered continuing the tale, but stopped
before restarting.
"Lass? Are ye..?" he began, looking down and seeing for the first time
the blood staining her blade and her clothes.
Through gritted teeth, she responded "Hmm...am I what?"
McD's eyes grew dark with concern. "Are ye well? Those are open wounds!"
He stepped forward hesitantly, unsure of what to do next. Raish nodded slowly
and sighed, wincing. "Wha' 'appened? Ye woul' let yerself bleed ta death?"
Her eyes opened, sorrow and pain reflected from within. "I'm sorry...You
weren't supposed to know so soon." McD bent over, trying for a closer look.
"I tried...They won't heal."
His eyes widened. "Nae even in another form?"
She shook her head. "The change...I got some of these while on all
fours," her voice soft, trying to mask some of the pain.
"Wha' can I do?" he looked around helplessly. "I'm nae a healer!" An
idea struck him, and he began rummaging through pouches, hoping beyond all
that he might find a forgotten potion of healing to stem Raish's flow of
blood.
"I thought...that coming here...that it would help..." Raish shook her
head and her voice finally began to convey the pain and exhaustion inside.
"It did...but just enough..."
"The caern? It 'olds nae enough power?"
Raish swallowed, biting back the pain. "McDonough..."
"I coul' run fer help?" he asked, trying desperately to seem useful.
"I can't call on it," she coughed, her hand coming away bloodied.
Neither noticed in the forefront on their minds the howls in the distance.
McD's hands dropped to his sides, a look a helplessness taking his features.
"I didn't have the strength before..." she sobbed, eyes closing again. He
knelt at her side, supporting her, trying to comfort her. "I made a
promise...I have to keep it..."
"I... I cannae ask ye ta keep any promises... nae now..."
Her eyes opened as she locks on his. "You've proven yourself to me..."
she said, pausing, cocking her head, hearing howls again, this time its
closer. McD, still unhearing, closed his eyes, as they reflected her pain.
"Your challenge won..." she swallowed and winced in pain. "Let no one
question." A tear formed on McD's retina, gliding haltingly down his cheek.
The breaking of branches sounded from nearby as Raish lifted a bound
journal in her hands, pressing it into McD's. He looked up, barely noticing
the sound of footsteps apporaching as Wolfgarde erupted into the clearing,
stopping dead in his tracks, seeing McD hover over Raish. Raish continued in
a hoarse voice. "My stories...all that has happened... keep them...tell
them," she gasped, the plea in her voice, interrupted by another coughing fit
that curled her up on her side. McD nodded, the first tear not alone as he
takes the book in one hand and, the other still supporting her back.
Wolfgarde stood there, shifting into his homid form. "What are you doing
to her!" The command in his rumbling voice snapped McD's attention from the
tome in his hand. He looked up at Garde, seeing him for the first time.
"I... I..." he stammered, not recognizing the compromising situation he
was in. Tears streamed down his face as he looked up.
"What have you done?!" Garde demanded, stepping forward, the rage
building up in him.
"She's wounded..." McDonough started. "I... the challenge..." He
struggled for words, choking back tears. He finally whispered, "She ne'er
tol' me..."
Wolfgarde moved over to Raish, kneeling down at her side. "Raish...." he
spoke soothingly. She tried to smile, instead coughing up more blood as her
lungs try to force out what should not have been there.
"What has happened?" he asked, lifting her gently and holding her against
him. He looked down at her normally bright blue robes, stained with a lot
black and crimson. Smelling the blood, his voice began to strain. "Raish?"
McD stayed crouched down, head lowered, unable to look. Raish whispered
softly, "So sorry...but had to finish..." She laid a hand on both men's arms
for a brief moment. McD winced, cradling the tome in his arms. Her eyes
snapped open, pain banked there. "McD...Holt's Heart...pick her
up...please..." In a softer voice, she spoke to Garde. "My
heart-wish...love...", resting her head against him.
The other Fianna raised his head, nodding and moving to gently pick up
the instrument. It was an odd combination of a lute and a mandolin, twelve
silver strings that sang with the voice of Gaia when Raishtal played it for
him in the past. As his hand touched the strange, unique musical device, pain
and pleasure mingled in a swirl of sudden nuances. He felt it attuning itself
to him... he sensed the power and intensity of Gaia's gift to her in it.
Another set of tears came unbidden to his eyes, new tears, fresh but not bred
of pain and sadness. He gasped at the first touch of the instrument, his head
snapping back, a look of comprehension flooding his face. Slowly, he stood to
his feet, unsteady. His entire body shivered and he stopped to rest head
against the mandolute.
Wolfgarde's voice pleaded, "Raish, you can't leave me now." By the way
the Get held her close, he looked as if he would have fought Death's minions
off if he could. "I told you ....you needed to be careful."
Raish whispered an explanation. "Leech... feeding... too close to the
Caern..."
Wolfgarde growled, the anger running through him. "Again the blasted
Leeches!!!" he howled. "They kill everything I love!!" Raish looked up into
Garde's eyes, drawing his visage down to hers, pleading to her to prove him
wrong.
"I tried...it was...the wounds won't heal," Raishtal spoke, her voice
drifting.
"Please.... Don't speak of leaving," Garde whispered.
His mate swallowed, nearly gagging on her own blood. "Can't go..not
yet..." her voice stronger for a moment as she pulled on what had to be the
last of her strength. "The klaive..." She motioned to where it lay on the
ground--where it fell when she curled up. Wolfgarde, holding her still,
reached for it and picked it up.
Raish rewarded him with a small smile. "You would have...been proud...
it would have...been a battle to sing of..." she spoke, tears collecting in
her eyes.
McD whispered, his throat dry, "You'll 'ave ta tell me o it... I will
proclaim it ta all." He moved nearby, slinging the mandolute delicately over
his shoulder, and placed the book gingerly into his pack atop scrolls and
maps. He slowly stepped up nearer the others, reverent and silent.
Wolfgarde tried to assure his mate, "Raish, I have always been proud of
you."
"As my father wielded it before me..." she continued, swallowing hard.
"I tried to honor this blade..." She lowered her voice to a whisper. "So you
must do now..."
"Raish please don't speak this way..."
In a softer voice yet, she asked him, "Promise me..."
Looking down into her eyes tears forming in his own, Wolfgarde choked on
his response. "What?"
"That you won't forget...our dream... the pack must grow...strong
again..." she begged him, until she was forced to curl up again as her lungs
siezed up again.
McD took an involuntary step backwards, looking away, trying not to
begin the crying again. Wolfgarde replied in a harsh whisper, "I will not
forget," as he held her against him waiting for the coughing to stop. The
dying galliard grew quiet after a few moments, and still. Garde looked down,
concern mounting. "Raish?"
McD looked up, hearing the silence. He whispered a nearly silent,
"no..."
Her breathing shallow, barely preceptable, she gasped again,
"Forever-love..."
Wolfgarde responded desperately, "Forever love...", kissing her gently.
He held her, even as she slipped away into unconsciousness, his head lowered,
sensing and urging her body to keep its tenuous grip on life.
After a time, Wolfgarde looked over to McD with sorrow and pain in his
eyes. The younger Garou stumbled for words, "I... Garde..." He bows head,
unable to meet the Get's eyes for long.
The ahroun shook his head. "You came here for a challenge... And though
Raish has giving you your rite..." The galliard choked back a sob at that,
the Get's resolve unbroken. "I will not recognize it yet...." he began, his
resolve wavering, choking back his own pain. "You have one more challenge..."
McD stiffened, nodded, head still lowered. "You will create a story of
her.... to enter into the annals.... So that all those.. that are here and
those that come after... will know who Raishtal was."
McD's stoicism, already dissolved, wavered again, the tears flowing
again. Looking up, silently, he nodded his acceptance. "Her story shall be
added ta tha Litany, as deserved by a warrior an' poet such as she."
"Thats all I ask."
Raish interrupted the solemn promise making, and interjected softly,
"Not 'was' yet" She opened her eyes slowly. "Garde..."
Looking back down to her, he spoke caringly. "Yes love?"
"I'm sorry..."
The Get shook his head as tears fall freely. "Nothing to be sorry
for..."
Raish blinked slowly, her voice drifting as her strength ebbed. Her
features softened as she beheld something neither of the others could see.
"I understand now...Reglidan was right...its so beautiful..."
McDonough could only look on in stunned silence. Wolfgarde looked on
silently as tears fall from him, spilling to the ground below. "Reg look over
her," he spoke into the air around them.
"I'll wait for you, my heart-wish..." she spoke. Engulfed in his grief,
Garde buried his head against her. In almost a whisper, she pulls at his
sleeve, "The cubs...Love them as much as I love you..."
"I will... I love you..."
Rasihtal spoke, yet softer and softer, "Forever-love...gaia's gift to
me..."
Wolfgarde held her tightly, whispering after her, "Forever love." The
light in her eyes faded as her lungs emptied one last time, a mist rising
into the air.
McD lowered his head, his form shifting slowly to that of the wolf.
Wolfgarde looked up to the moon, laying her reluctantly down. Carried by the
winds, a melody could almost be heard whistling. Wolfgarde, unmoved, felt his
world crashing in on him.
McD urged him quietly, in wolfspeak, mind to mind, "Garde... the
Gathering for the Departed... the rite... it should be soon."
He looked on as Wolfgarde shifted to lupus, his midnight fur ruffled by
a slight breeze. Carried on that zephyr came a familiar voice... 'Be his
balance... for me,' it spoke to him. Nodding, he whispered into the wind "I
will."
Wolfgarde closed his eyes and embraced the change. A great dark wolf,
his black pelt peppered with grey, looked out at the empty sky and let loose
a howl filled with a heart wrenching song of mourning. McD gathered breath in
his lungs to join him. Calling on Gaia for the Call of the Wyld, the Fianna
howled with the Get. Their kenning howls reverberate through the lands,
carried by the galliard's gift. The Get poured his heart into the cry,
emptying his loss, grief, anger, and his sadness into the air.
Awakened by the noise, the cubs sluggishly stirred near the fire. As
they woke, they stoodd confused for a moment. McD, noticing, turned to the
ahroun. In wolfspeak, he spoke to Garde. "Attend your cubs... I shall stand
as Warder."
Wolfgarde turned to look at McD, with pain filled eyes, not able to say
anything. After a moment, he nodded and approached his young ones. They had
seen Da howling and not Ma...and walking to her side, they nudged her still
form. Four confused and sleepy eyes looked up to their father, still not
understanding. Wolfgarde moved to the cubs as both whined softly. He talked
to them in soothing tones as their Ma would, attempting to ease their minds.
They looked up at him, asking if she sleeps. He whispers to them, "Yes
she sleeps with the earth mother now." Jas seemed to accept the answer as it
stood, Scouter nudged Raishtal's unmoving arm once more, too stubborn to
think that Ma won't wake for her. When that doesn't work, she ran over to her
mother's things and dug out her pipes; picking them up in her mouth and
placing them in Raish's hand. She then laid next to Da, waiting. Wolfgarde
laid down next to them, placing his head between his paws, a giant presence
in the midst of the fragility of the cub's youth.
McDonough withdrew a little way from the group then, shifting to crinos
form. His gaze reached out past the caern's confines, waiting for the first
to arrive in answer to Garde's Call.A Night at the Tavern
(submitted by: Know Madd)
Madd got up slowly from the bunk in his meeger room, and walked over to
the wash bassin. A small mirror hung on the wall behind it. he stared into it
taking in his apearance. Last night he has indulged a bit to much at Great
Hall Tavern. He had gone in for only a few drinks and had found that
merriment was in full swing.
He took a seat in the back at a table and soon the barmaid came along and
asked for an order. Her name she said was Mystri. A light lass she was, guy
and percky as she floated from table to table collecting empties and taking
orders from the patrons. Madd had asked her for a Fire Brandy and minutes
later she dropped it off at the table. He dropped a gem in her hand and she
smiled at him dropping the ruby down the front of her bodice before she moved
on.
A group of New Out Riders was sitting at a nearby table being loud and
enjoying themselves. As another would enter the tavern yelling 'Hail NOR'
they would all yell back and tip thier mugs until they where drained.
Many strange characters moved about the tavern dancing and conversing.
There where a few of the Brotherhood of Pathfinders sitting at the bar
downing Fire Giant Frenzy like it was going out of style. Talking about the
coming season and bantereing about new kinds of food they could make with
"Holoder eyes and such.
A pseudodragon, one Wyrm Silver by name, was laying on the bar curled
around a bag of brownies and stuffing himself so full he looked as if he may
end up popping before the night was over.
A lion padded around the bar. Stopping every now and again to converse
with Wyrm Silver. He was cool and collect. Never getting ruffled or brushed
as the patrons wandered around the bar. Most giving him a respectful nod as
they passed him by. NWA Amra it seemed had stopped in from patroling the city
with Lored Nashers troops hoping to steel a moment with a certain lady, but
as luck would have it she never showed that night.
Madd finished his Fire Brandy and went on to order three or four more.
Listening to Bards singing thier songs and spouting poems as they played on
harp or lyre. A talent contest was in full swing with the prize of some
Nasher Pearls up for grabs to the best Bardic yarn spun. But soon enough time
had passed and it was getting late into the night. Madd thanked Mystri for a
good time and stood to leave.
As he turned to head for the door head swiming from the Brandy's numbing
bite he bumped into a woman. He recognized her as the enchantress, Chyanna, a
fem-fatale that had been flirting with tavern goers by the bar most the
evening. She flashed a smile up at him as he appologized for his clumsiness.
Then Chyanna turned and walked to the far side of the tavern. Madd stood
there intranced as she wiggled away from him wondering how a woman could look
so good. Then shaking his head to clear it a bit he left out the door heading
for the inn next door to find his room and sleep off the nights drinking.
MaddWaiting for the Night
(submitted by: Vagabond K)
I'm waiting for the night to come,
the night I wait for is black, black as my soul.
I'm waiting for the night to fall,
falling slowly and gently like a blanket,
a blanket that comforts and calms those those trust in its protection.
I'm waiting for the night to betray,
betray those who put their faith in its predictability,
those who slumber peacefully awaiting the rising sun.
I'm waiting for the night to hide,
hide me from those whom I seek,
making me clear as glass, yet twice as jagged.
I'm waiting for the night to keep,
to keep my very presence hidden from all those who look,
keeping me safe from those who are in danger.
I'm waiting for the night to push,
to push me through the woods as I run through the trees
like the wind itself.
I'm waiting for the night to turn,
to turn its head and remain blind to the horrific
deeds that I am about to commit.
I'm waiting for the night to mute,
to remain silent to my crimes, to pardon me for my injustice.
I'm waiting for the night to carry,
to carry me back home, unsoiled, unspoken.
I'm waiting for the sun to rise,
for when night disappears, so shall I without a sound.
I'm waiting for the night to come.
Marcus
(submitted by: MW Gothic)
The fog passed along the forest floor. Its snakelike tendrils wrapping
themselves around the tree trunks. There was an eerie quietness about the
woods on this night that would be later described as the "calm before the
storm" by bards as they told the tale near the hearths of many inns. Tales
that would keep all listeners hanging onto every word. Tales of a crime that
would live in the annals of infamy forever more.
It would be a tale of the creation of one of the greatest warriors for the
forces of light that had or ever will have existed. A warrior whose courage
and honor would be envied by all. Even evil beings would bow their heads in
reverance when he passed. A warrior born from the ravages of a war and the
destruction of all he loved.
Marcus.
In a time of war he existed. All he cared about was his family and all he
wanted was to live in peace. But this would not be. Evil has never been
known to let well enough alone. And this time Evil made the ultimate
mistake. It made the ultimate enemy.
Now what happened would have driven most people insane with grief. They
would of been useless and possibly even taken their own lives. But Marcus
grieved in a different way. He would not sit back and watch as the same
thing happened to others. He had wanted nothing to do with the war that
waged in his homeland but it had found him anyway. And now that it had gone
through the trouble of finding him, he decided to pay it back.
He had been a simple farmer with a wife and two young daughters. To help on
the farm he had hired some help from some townsmen who he trusted. But they
were in town at night. They were not there when the fog approached. They
were not there when the crickets stopped chirping their songs. They had not
been there and neither had Marcus.
But his family was there. And as the forces of darkness surrounded his small
home and then moved in for the kill, Marcus knew of nothing amiss. The
minions of evil showed no mercy. What they did is better left untold. The
simple fact that they killed Marcus's wife and children is enough to
understand how that drove him to become "the Swordarm of Torm."
"The Swordarm of Torm," as he has been called ever since that night, was a
name given to him because Torm, the god of honor, had found Marcus screaming
for vengeance among the ruins of his farm house. Torm had seen the crime for
what it was. He had noticed the bodies and what had been done to them. And
these things angered the god and he made a choice. Marcus would be his
champion against evil.
He gave Marcus the ability to hunt down evil and destroy it. He showed
Marcus the faces and names of all those that had been present at the .house
during the crime. He gave Marcus the job of finding and executing the
fiends. A job Marcus was very happy to accept.
With a look of determination etched on his face, Marcus rose from his knees
before the god. Torm handed him magical armor and a sword of magnificant
design. Marcus was to find all of the villians one by one and destroy them.
Then the god disappeared. Marcus stood there a while and made an oath to his
dead wife and children that he would complete this task and gain vengeance.
Weeks went by and the army of darkness suffered losses without entereing one
battle. The generals became enraged at this fact and tried to find the cause
of this. They discovered that the losses were from one group of wariors
numbering in the 20s. And word had spread among the towns and villages that
a holy warrior was doing the killing.
This made the generals even more angry that one vigilante was killing their
men. So fighters were sent to ambush and capture this infidel.
They failed.
The killings continued and now it appeared as though some of the fighters
sent to handle this problem were turning up slain as well. And the legend
began to spread. The villagers had a hero now. A backbone to cause them to
fight. And fight they did.
The armies of darkness found themselves caught between the armies of light
and an army of angry villagers. Their numbers were dwindling. And all
because of some warrior the locals called "the Swordarm of Torm."
Finally the evil generals withdrew their forces and retreated to safety. The
war was over finally. the forces of good had prevailed.
So I tell you this story because as long as good people suffer. As long as
evil exists. There will be The Swordarm of Torm. He is a ghost. He is
honor. He is Death to the forces of darkness. He is a whisper on the wind.
He is Marcus.(submitted by: Dr Dumpers)

Path Fever Observation Comitee (PFOC)
NW Hospital is hiring! That's right, we're hiring! We are currently looking
for some of the most dedicated physicians in NeverWinter! Why? I'll tell
you why! The latest affliction to strike Neverwinter is a very scary one,
after finding outselves under the influence of Lok Jaw and The WARR Flu,
we've discovered a malicious new malady, Path Fever!
Path Fever seems to have struck BOP first, it is an absolutely awful
condition, so far the symptoms are as follows, the more symptoms shown the
worse the patient's situation:
1 - An uncontrolable desire to go out a "follow paths", even if it's not a
man-made path, they'll
follow the path of an awful odor if they must, they just can't help following
a path.
2 - Unpredictable pauses in speech. For example, Normal = "I wonder where
this path leads." Path Fever = "I wonder... where... ... this path...
leads."
3 - Misty eyes. Often this goes along with confusion and a short attention
span.
4 - Anger at nothing in particular for little or no reason. It's been known
that victims of Path Fever have all of a sudden lost their temper and decided
to take out their sudden rage on an innocent, unexpecting little pebble they
happen to notice on the floor. In the most severe cases the pebble will
actually win the struggle.
5 - Tongue slowly turning green.
We need a team to study Path Fever further, and all who are qualified (Or
think they are qualified) in the Realms are welcome to apply for the
assignment in the "Help From the Good Doctor" folder in the "Tales" section.
We must solve this problem ASAP.

A Blessing
(submitted by: Ldy Lilla)
Lila woke up and darted out bed....she looked around her quarters for
her journal. Where could it be asked Lila with a voice so full of excitment.
Ah, there ye be old friend of mine she smiled..looking to the ground she
notices that her two kittens Lerick, and Daggie are sleeping upon it. Gently,
Lila picks both of the kittens up and hugs them....how are ye both this fine
morn lil ones? Today is a very special day....we need to ready ourselves and
set off for our great journey. Lerick climbed up upon Lila's shoulder
snuggling into her long red hair, while Daggie playfully ran around hitting
his paws at her feet. Lila picked up Daggie and held him so close to
her....oh, how I feel so blessed to have found ye and Lerick that day.
Feeling Lerick wrapping into her hair, Lila gently took him from her
shoulders and placed both him and Daggie back down to eat their breakfast.
Now ye both be good while I finish getting ready, we have something very
important to do today lil ones.
Lila walked over to her window and opened it up watching the other
little animals playing in the early morning light. Oh if only all of the
realms could be filled with such love and beauty as is found in Camelot
muttered Lila. If only I could make some kind of difference and bring the
evil in this world to it's knees and make the beauty of goodness flow. Lila
sighs softly knowing that the man she is engaged to is evil. Softly
spoken..if he only knew that he need not be evil...that he has a heart of
goodness too...Lila takes a few steps, but alas maybe one day I can help him
to see this.
Walking to the door Lila takes Lerick and Daggie with her come
lil ones we are ready for our journey. Lerick and Daggie look to Lila with
eyes of wonder....carefully Lila wraps them up in her cloak so that they will
not feel the bitter chill of early spring and they begin their journey.
Looking around them the three adventures take in all the beauty that surounds
them....oh how I love Camelot lil ones. As if understanding her words, Lerick
and Daggie snuggle closer to Lila and show contentment in their eyes. We are
here lil ones Lila says cheerfully....tis the place that I found ye both a
few weeks ago...and look over there in the grass...Lila's tears begin to
fall, there lil ones is yer momma, please understand I wish ye not to leave
my side..nor am I turning my backs to either of ye....it's jes yer momma
missed ye both so very much and loves ye both such as I do. Lerick and Daggie
kissed Lila's tear flushed cheeks and hopped down into the grass...looking
back at Lila they pause and then turn running towards their mother. Lila
stood there alone in the field, knowing that she had done what was best for
them. Watching the happiness upon their mothers face, Lila's heart grew
strong. Lord Tyr it's so funny sometimes we seem to neglect those little
blessings that we have in our lives. We let our minds wander on other things,
rather than just stepping back and seeing that around us both those who do
good and those who do evil are here and a part of our lives...making us who
and what we are. We are all made up of memories, the silly things we do or
say...the learning we do to grow and those things should never be forgotten,
nor should those people in our lives.
So tis on this ST. Patricks Day I wish to tell my family of KORT and
to all among NW realms the blessing that once was told to me...may it always
give ye strength and courage to always do what is right and may ye all always
see those lil blessings that are in yer lives.

You've blessed me with stars

please, Lord give me too,
A heart that is always
Grateful to you.

<FONT COLOR="#000000" SIZE=3>"There are many things to learn in life, but
few will be more helpful and versatile as the Doctrine of Sun-tzu."
I heard those words almost a decade ago and I listened, followed and I am now
receiving the a measure of success. These are the Ten Rules of Warfare, that
I applied in the environs of Neverwinter.
1. Do not let your enemies encircle you.
Watch out for the monsters' flanking manoeuver. They will try for back
attacks.
Stay in at a wall or next to a companion. Eight monsters with a mediocre
chance of striking you, will strike you, (even if you have superior
abilities).
Exception: If you have the opportunity to sweep, then do so.
2. Unite with you allies to focus on a common enemy
Eight Heros against a single foe will probably inflict more damage than
received.
Usually choose the deadliest monster and attack it first.
3. Do not be separated from your comrades
Your companion is your shield as you are his sword, one without the other
will not last long. Make sure you both are healed and ready before entering
combat.
4. Make Strategic Plans to encircle the enemy
When you out number the monster, send a friend to encircle for the back
attack.
5. Not all roads are to be followed
There are many roads to lead to ruin. Choose carefully. However, some of the
best spoils are not on the roads. Explore, for you are but an explorer first
and conqueror second.
6. Not all enemies are to be attacked
Know thy enemy. Read what other adventurers wrote, talk to them, get into
the spirit of Neverwinter. Every monster has it's weakness, it is up to you
to find it. However, if that weakness is an enchanted weapon and you don't
have one, Stay Away.
7. Not all cities are to be assaulted
Cities are both dangerous and friendly. Again seek out friends in friendly
cities and travel in gangs to hostile ones.
8. Not all battles are to be contended
The warrior that wins a battle without firing one arrow is a superior
opponent. Parlay if you can. Bribe for passage. Remember, you want to
imprison your foe with the strand of a spiders' web than stun him with a kick
of an elephant.
9. No all requests and commands are to be heeded
Request for help sometime comes from inferior warriors who do not think the
battle through. Do not jump in like a lemming. On the other side superior
warriors choose their battles wisely, and despise renegade warriors jumping
in unasked.
10. Keep your spell casters safe and out of harms way
For spell casters are your artillery and hospital. Without them, any party
will flounder and drown. In a battle, *order* your spell casters into a
second or third rank, to cast and heal overhead.
This is but a smattering of information, please feel free to leave me a note,
or buy me an ale, so we could discuss this further.
Humbly,
Thane Dirk
