A TEST OF WILL - 9/26/96

The recent threat to Neverwinter had been met and defeated, yet Lord Nasher
was still stunned by the dreaded Rakshasa's abilities to confuse and fool the
populace of the city. Determined to know whose wits and willpower could be
counted upon in any future crisis, the Lord Mayor arranged that some of his
most smooth-talking, beguiling guards be sent amongst the citizens. Under
the guise of selling tickets to the Annual Neverwinter Elite Guardsman's
Dance, benefiting the Widows & Orphan's home and providing nourishing home
delivered meals to the elderly, the Garion, Donagh, Nabu, Oberon and Ember
tested the willpower of those they encountered.

Clever speech, an occassional side-long charming glance and persistence paid
off, as citizens rushed to purchase tickets to the Dance! The names of those
that were able to resist the double-talk and persuasive wiles were each
recorded and Lord Nasher rewarded them handsomely. (Resist 3 Charm Person
spells, win 3 Pearls) Over 130 citizens had been visited by the guard, and a
full half, 65, won Lord Nasher's notice!

Thanks to all who participated, including the guardsmen and women who spent
the next days trying to recover their voices! Congratulations to the
winners!

New Player's Tour - 10/4

The sun rose above the treeline as the herald called out, "Hear ye! Hear ye!
Adventurer's needed to investigate Windycliffs! Meet NW Vorpal near
Strider's Inn to form the party!" The adventurers filed in, and the party
formed. Darmencast, Eamonvalda, Ed L4d, Naztblac, JohnT58141, Sarek80336,
and NOR Bobb made preparation for the trip ahead.

The party met very little resistance through the Warehouse District.
However, when they reached the main road in Windycliffs, they were assaulted
by kampfults and thieves repeatedly along with several groups of pyro snakes
and lizard men. Under the great swordsmanship of Ed L4d and Naztblac, the
lizardmen fell. The magic and cleric powers of the rest of the group pushed
back the enemies until they reached the inn and rested.

They gathered stories at the inn about the ogres that had taken over the town
hall. All of them agreed that they had to save the town at all costs. After
investigating the buildings, the townspeople gave them enough information
telling them that the place to find the ogres who had overrun the town was
the town hall.

After saving the centaur who told them that Luskan maybe involved, the party
assaulted the town hall. In a vicious battle, the party held their ground.
With one counter attack they pushed the ogres and their minions out of town
hall, and they chased them down the road and out of the town. The party,
weary from their journey, headed back to Neverwinter with a feeling that only
comes with a good day's work.

Things To Do With the Living
(submitted by: Veridienne)

start by staring
let them see the cold blackness of your eyes
until they know it is over
then run icy hands along their skin
let them feel the chill
smell the sweet scent of the grave
rip sharp claws through their flesh
watch the rich red blood flow
slowly tearing back the layers of flesh
muscles, tendons, fat, down to the bone
and then bring the mouth down to taste
finally looking up again for the last agony in their eyes

  "MECH Mourg and MECH Allah, please report to the Council Chamber
immediately."

     The message flashed on all the viewscreens of the Comm Centers
throughout the MECH Complex as well as sent to the MECH's private chambers
and their rejuv tanks in case they were in stasis undergoing repairs.

      Emperor Deuce sat at the head of the council chamber table. A huge
slab of Black Obsidian polished to a dull shine. The Banners of the MECH
hung loosely along the walls...The Napalm Monks, Jade Falcons, Shadow Mercs,
Serraphic Malice, Sapphire Scourge, Crescent Hawks, Metal Demons, and
Immortals.

     Grand Admiral Ember stood on Deuce's right side, looking imperial in his
formal uniform and the flowing cape on his shoulders. Empress Lotus sat at
the table on Deuce's left side, herself calm and serene in her dress uniform.
Her eyes glittered in expectation.

     The Door to the Grand Council Chamber shushed open and Admiral Aztek
stepped onto the cold metal floor, dressed in his formal battle armor. His
emblem, a white heron on a field of flame was emblazoned on his left breast
panel. He too wore a cape of flowing white around his shoulders.

     Bowing to the Emperor, Aztek stepped aside as he made his Anouncement.
"Emperor Deuce, Soldiers Mourg and Allah have come as ordered. Shall I send
them in?"

     "Of course...why do you think I sent for them in the first place?" The
Emperor chuckled. "Do you always have to be so...formal, Aztek?"

    Grinning, Aztek winked at Deuce. "Why not? It always seems to get a rise
out of you.."

    "Send them in..before I'm forced to get Imperial on you."

    Aztek saluted and left laughing. "Very well Sir!"

    At Deuce's side, Lotus giggled. "He so enjoys seeing you squirm, Deuce.
Since he knows you hate having to act so formal as Emperor." Ember stiffled
a laugh.

    Aztek opened the door once again. "Emperor Deuce, Grand Admiral Ember,
Empress Lotus, may I present Soldiers Mourg and Allah."

    Mourg and Allah stepped into the Grand Council Chamber and Saluted
Sharply. Aztek let the door close behind them and stepped around to stand
behind Lotus.

    Ember walked down the side of the table towards the two soldiers. "We've
been looking over your profiles and progress reports. We do this at random
times to random soldiers within MECH. This time we chose the two of you."

   "You've also sent in applications recently for newly opened positions
among the staff officers. We'd like to give you this time to speak up for
yourselves. Explain why you deserve such positions." Deuce grinned as he
spoke to them. "I need more convincing."

   Allah and Mourg both looked shocked. "SIR?" They said in unison.

   "You heard me. Why do you deserve the positions that you applied for?
Why should We appoint you to those positions? Speak up!"

   Mourg shifted uneasily on his feet. "Sir, if my actions don't speak for
themselves, what use will my words do? You all know what I'm capable of and
if I have to tell you what I'm capable of..forgive me Sirs...then You're not
such Great Officers."

   Allah tried to cut him off. "I think what Mourg is trying to say Sir, is
that we are MECH and we serve were we're best suited. We know we can do
those jobs, but you all are the one's that appoint us to those positions. We
Live to Serve the MECH."

   "Well said Allah. Don't think I could have said it better myself." Aztek
chuckled until a look from Deuce shut him up. "Sorry Sir."

   Deuce looked at the Two MECH. "You're both right of course. I just
wanted to make sure I'd picked the right MECH for the jobs at hand. Ember,
will you do the honors."

   Pulling several jewel boxes from his uniform pocket, Ember handed one to
Mourg and one to Allah.

   "It is on this day, the 29th day of September, on the first year of the
Rule of Deuce, Emperor of the MECH, that We do hereby appoint MECH Mourg
Commander of the 5th Flight Seraphic Malice. We do recognize Mourg's
devotion to the MECH and to his Flight. May his Command bring Honor and
Strength to the MECH."

 "It is on this day, the 29th of September, on the first year of the Rule of
Deuce, Emperor of the MECH, that We do hereby appoint MECH Allah Commander of
the 8th Flight Immortals. We do recognize Allah's devotion to the MECH and
to his Flight. May his Command bring Honor and Strength to the MECH."

   Ember opened their jewel boxes to reveal their Commander's pips.
"Congratulations Brothers, your applications were uncontested and we wanted
to appoint you to the postions ASAP. You are now both Commanders in the
MECH. Wear your rank with Pride and Honor."

  Aztek stepped up to his Brothers and firmly clasped their hands. "Like
there was ever any doubt you two could do the job. Congratulations my
Brothers and Friends. You do us all Proud."

  Lotus crossed over to the newly appointed Commanders and kissed them softly
on the cheek. "You both have long deserved this appointment. We would have
given them to you sooner, but we wanted to finish the new system before we
announced your unchallenged appointments. Be well my brothers."

  Deuce stood and crossed over to Mourg and Allah. He saluted them. "You
deserve every bit of honor that comes with that Rank, brothers. Now get out
there and get your Flights into shape. MECH has a realm to conquer."

   Mourg and Allah Saluted Deuce and the Admirals Sharply. "Yes SIR!"

   Congrats Bros....it's well deserved.

  When the door closed behind Mourg and Allah's exit, Deuce turned to Aztek.

    "Call in the next two MECH Soldiers Admiral. I want to get the new
Commanders into action ASAP."

   "Understood Emperor. I shall call Spade and Wired to the Council Chamber
Immediately." Aztek walked out to the forward chamber and keyed his COMM
Unit.

   "Soldiers Spade and Wired....Report to the Council Chamber on the double."

   Minutes later, Spade came rushing into the outer chamber, stopped and
saluted Aztek. "It is nice to see you again Sir. When are you going to
visit the Monks barracks again? Vixen and Synne have been asking for you."
He grinned and winked at his good friend.

  "I'll get to them in due time my friend. But for now, you're keeping the
Emperor waiting. What took you so long in answering my summons?" The
glimmer in his eyes told Spade that Aztek was trying to unnerve him.

   "I came as fast as I could Admiral. I'd like to see you make the run from
Triboar to our Complex in 2 minutes flat. I bet your old rust bucket
couldn't make it in 5."

   Aztek laughed. "Enough Spade. I'm not as old as all that. And I could
still run circles around you on the battlefield." He winked.

   "As you say Admiral. I've never been one to disagree with my superiors."
The tone of voice told Aztek that he indeed disagreed with his remark.

   Good, he though...Spade still keeps his spirits up. Aloud he said.
"That's all the time for small talk we have my friend, the Emperor
awaits...Where's Wired?"

   At that moment Wired turned the corner into the entryway in full dress
uniform. Walking casually, he stopped short in front of Aztek and Saluted.
"Sir, MECH Wired reporting as ordered."

   "Took you long enough Wired. Next time cut it in half and you might make
it on time."

   "As you wish Admiral. But I thought it best I change out of my Bloodied
Armor and into my Dress Uniform for this Summons. I must look my best for
the Emperor."

   "Hmm...Good thinking Wired." Aztek glanced at Spade's slighly ruffled
uniform. Spade began tightying up. "Although...when the Emperor calls...you
answer, no matter what state you are in. Understood?"

   "Understood Sir."

   "You made the right choice though this time Wired. Luckily. The Emperor
would like you to look your best on this occasion. Now, let's go inside."

   The Door opened ahead of him. Deuce, Ember and Lotus were back at their
positions around the table.

   Bowing to the Emperor, Aztek announced the applicants. "Emperor Deuce,
Empress Lotus, and Grand Admiral Ember...MECHs Spade and Wired reporting as
ordered."

   The two soldiers saluted the council and stood at attention.

   Deuce stood and pushed his chair back. "Do either of you know why you are
here?"

   "No, Sir.....I do not Sir." Answered both of them.

   "Well, let me enlighten you." Nodding to Ember and then to Lotus, Deuce
began his explanation. The Grand Admiral and Empress walked slowly down the
sides of the Grand Council Chamber table towards the soldiers. "On random
occasions, the Council and I pick several of the MECH and review their
records. We then decide, based on their records and recommendations from
their peers whether or not to promote them, demote them...or remove them from
the Link entirely. The MECH's ability to lead, fight, and forward the cause
of MECH are all questioned thoroughly. Their Honor and Valor are at stake."

   He paused and met each of the soldier's eyes. Ember and Lotus came to a
halt to either side of the pair. "Now, I ask you one question. Are you
Loyal to MECH? You may speak freely."

   Spade looked shocked and horrified. "Sir, I hope my loyalty to MECH is
not at question...but if it is, I'd like to know who it was that made the
accusation that I wasn't loyal to our Cause. I am MECH, Emperor...I went
through Purification of my own free will, because I saw MECH to be pure and
true to their cause and loyal and caring to their own. I wanted to be a
Soldier and serve where I could. To help my Brothers and Sisters. My
Loyalty is true...and always will be."

   Wired glanced at Spade, considering what he had said. "If my Loyalty is
at question Emperor, then I'm not doing my job. I am MECH and that is all.
I submit myself to the judgement of yourself. What I am should never be at
question as long as I am doing my Cause right."

   Deuce glanced from one to the other. "I never said your Loyalty was in
question brothers. I merely asked if you were Loyal. Your answers prove that
you are. If you doubted your loyalty for a moment, I or one of the others
would have noticed and acted upon it. Fear not...You are not here to be
chastised or rebuked. You are here to be Complimented and Thanked for your
faithful service to MECH. You are also to be Rewarded."

   Ember pulled the jewel case from beneath his cape and presented it to
Wired. "On this day, the 30th of September, in the first year of the reign
of Deuce, Emperor of the MECH, it is my pleasure to appoint you, MECH Wired,
Commander of the 7th Flight Metal Demons. Your Service to MECH is flawless
and your Honor and Loyalty untarnished. May it continue to be so.
Congratulations my Brother."

   Lotus stepped up to Spade and kissed him on the cheek. Handing him the
jewel case, she exclaimed his rank. "On this day, the 30th of September, in
the first year of the reign of Deuce, Emperor of the MECH, it is our pleasure
to appoint you, MECH Spade, Commander of the 1st Flight Napalm Monks.
Indeed, your service to MECH is untarnished and exemplary. You have brought
Honor to the MECH and kept the Monks at top form. Congratulations my
Brother." She kissed him again and then went over and kissed Wired and gave
him a fierce Hug. "Congratulations Wired, it is well earned."

    Deuce strode over to Wired and Spade and shook both their hands. "Wear
those ranks with pride gentlemen. You've earned them. Bring Honor and Valor
to the MECH."

     "Thank you Sir. I will do MECH proud." Spade Saluted the Emperor.

     "Thank you Sir. I will serve MECH the best I can." Wired Saluted the
Emperor.

     "You are dismissed Commanders. Go Tend to your Flights."

      Aztek escorted the two new Commanders out of the Chamber.
"Congratulations you two. I'm sure you will do wonderfully. Spade, take
care of the Monks for me." He grinned. "You've got some mighty big shoes to
fill."

  Deuce looked to his Admirals, "Well, We've gotten a few of the promotions
out of the way. It's nice to see the Flights under such strong leadership
again."

   Lotus nodded her head, "Yes, the choices We made seem to have been good
ones, but only time will tell that."

   "You're right Lotus. Aztek, would you please assemble the troops...these
next Promotions I feel everyone should take part in. It's 1500 hours now, I
want them assembled and in Dress Uniforms by 1700. Ember, see to it that the
Assembly hall is in order before the proceedings."

    "Yes Deuce, I'll get right on it. Shall I call everyone back? What of
our sentries?" Aztek paused and questioned on his way out.

    Ember looked to Aztek. "Surely brother, the Complex would be safe enough
on automated security systems for the half hour that the Assembly would
last."

    "Ember's right Aztek. I want everyone in attendance. Understood?"

    "Understood Emperor. I'll have them ready and waiting for you by 1645
hours."

    Exiting the Council Chamber, Aztek strode down the hallways to his new
office and quarters. After his promotion to Admiral he had needed more space
to handle affairs of the Empire and he no longer felt at ease in the Monks
barracks. Though they'd always be his closest friends and brothers, he'd
needed to distance himself. Otherwise he'd favor them too much, and Aztek
had always wanted to show fairness on both sides.

   He entered his office and sat down at his desk. Keying his COMM Unit and
his link to the Complex CPU he sent out the priority one message. Any MECH
caught disobeying that call was in for a severe lesson in discipline.

   <This is Admiral Aztek to all MECH Personnel. Priority One Message. All
Units are to Report back to Central by 1700 hours. Formal Uniforms required.
Prompt compliance is necessary. The Emperor will Address the Troops in the
Assembly Hall. The Clock is Ticking. Aztek Out.>

   Turning from his Desk, he went into his Quarters to retrieve his dress
uniform. Shedding his Battle Armor, Aztek mistakenly grabbed his old Monk
Robes. "Hmm...I keep wanting to put these on." Aztek talked to himself in a
hushed voice. "Guess I'll never get used to the idea that I'm not an
official part of the Monks any longer." Dropping the robes to the floor, he
pulled out his Admiral Uniform. "This will have to do."

   The MECHs formal uniform were pure black with a white undershirt. Aztek,
much to a few of the brothers dispair had altered his Uniform. His Formal
Dress was of all White, and his undershirt of black. On his left breast he
bore his insignia, a White Heron on a Field of Fire.

  Throwing his cape around his shoulders, Aztek finished dressing and left
his chamber. The Brethren would be assembling very soon.

   Throughout the Complex MECH brothers and sisters returned from their
scouting, their hunts and forays into the realms and assembled in the
Complex's main hall. Coming in one's and two's at first and then as time
neared 1700, groups of 5 and more entered the hall.

   They assembled by Flight, as they always had during these formal affairs.
Usually by rank, but few wore a rank at this moment. Soon to change however,
as the MECH adjusted to the change in protocol.

   4 wore their new Ranks proudly. Spade, Wired, Allah, and Mourg.
Commanders of their flights, they'd gained a new confidence in themselves and
their flights. The face of MECH would change by their hands, and the hands
of the other chosen.

   1700 rang...and the Grand hall doors closed. Aztek and Ember took a quick
attendance check and inspection. Every last MECH had attended as ordered.
It was a grand sight...not often would you see all the MECH in one place at
one time. Usually some were off on missions or performing other duties
throughout the realms.

   Ember activated his COMM..."Emperor, Empress, all is in order. Time for
your entrance." He then turned to all the Assembled MECH. "Welcome Brothers
and Sisters. As you all may be wondering why you've been assembled here and
now, let me enlighten you. Today we've begun the reorganization of the
Empire. Hopefully, you've all been reading you're files. 4 of your Brothers
were Promoted to Commander this afternoon, and there are more to come. MECH
Spade, Commander of the Napalm Monks, MECH Mourg, Commander of the Seraphic
Malice, MECH Wired, Commander of the Metal Demons, and MECH Allah, Commander
of the Immortals. Their Applications to these positions were uncontested and
they've earned these positions."

  Cheers rang out through the Hall. Hands were shook, Kisses passed, Hugs
given. Ember brought his hands up into the air and silenced them.

  "You've been assembled to witness several important Promotions this day.
But before We announce them...ATTENTION! The Emperor Deuce and Empress Lotus
are arriving."

   The MECHs came to full attention as their Emperor and Empress entered the
Hall in their Battle Armor. All gleaming and polished to a brilliant shine,
Deuce and Lotus strode proudly down the aisle of MECHs assembled. Each row
of MECH saluted as they walked past.

   At the front, Deuce and Lotus joined Ember and Aztek at the Hall's Main
table. It too, was made of pure obsidian, black like the deepest void in
space.

   "At Ease!" Aztek called out and the MECH all relaxed. Deuce stepped
forward.

   "Brothers, Sisters, MECH....We are gathered here today to honor some very
important Warriors among us and to promote several of you as well." Deuce
looked at the MECH in front of him. So many...he thought...a grand sight to
compare with the near dozen that we began as. "Sister Steem, please present
yourself."

    Steem stepped forward from the ranks of the Seraphic Malice and came to a
halt directly in front of Deuce. "Sir!" She called and saluted.

    "It is with great pleasure that We Grant you the Rank of Master of Cadets
or the Training Supervisor. Steem has been an excellent teacher to many of
you and even to myself on rare occasions. Her valor in the battlefield is
without compare and with her help, we will raise such a force as to destroy
all that stand before us. Vice Admiral Steem, the Cadets are yours to train
as you see fit. Teach them Loyalty to their own, Valor on the field, and
most of all, Honor in all things great and small. You have my authority and
that of the council to give any MECH soldier the temporary rank of Drill
Sergeant to aid you in the training of the young Cadets."

   Ember stepped forward and pinned the Vice Admiral Pips on her lapel.
"Congratulations Sister. MECH will be strong and undefeated under your
toutalege."

   Lotus gave her Sister a big Hug. "It is well deserved Sister. You'll do
as you've always done...your best."

   Aztek stepped up to her. "Congratulations Sister. There could be no
other to take this position." He then turned to the assembled MECHs. "It is
my pleasure to present to you...Vice Admiral Steem...Master of
Cadets...Training Master."

    Whoops and cries of congratulations rang through the Hall. Aztek let
them carry on for several Minutes as Steem strode back to her flight and was
met with heart felt congratulations. When he noticed it was dying down, he
called them to silence.

    Deuce spoke again. "MECH Moses, Please present yourself." Moses
appeared from the center of the Shadow Mercs group and strode towards the
Emperor. Deuce continued speaking as he approached. "Recently the Master
Recruiter position became open and Lotus, Ember, Aztek and I could think of
no other MECH to fill that slot than Moses. He has served MECH loyaly as the
Assistant to the Recruiter for many months and we felt he had more then
earned the position of Master Recruiter. MECH Moses, I hereby promote you to
Vice Admiral and give you the Recruiting Division. MECH needs warriors,
son...You're to head the Purification Department...and make Me...Us...MECHs
such that the world will fear."

   Ember presented Moses with his Vice Admiral Pips and congratulated him.
Lotus kissed her son on the Cheek and hugged him fiercely. Aztek shook his
hand then presented him to the assemblage.

   Cheers echoed throughout the Hall as Moses strode back towards the Shadow
Mercs...Laughs were heard as well as he wiped his Mother's kisses from his
cheek.

    Deuce silenced them. "Today is also a Day to honor those MECH that have
given much to their brothers and sisters. These MECH have served loyaly over
and over without fail. They've gained respect in the Realms as well as at
home. Their Courage and Strength are unparalleled. They are Legends. MECHs
Judas, Fiend, Havoc, Vapor, 8ball, and Ryman...please Step Forward."

    Ember took over. "Behold Brothers and Sisters of MECH. These Valorous
Six MECH that have brought the Realms within our grasp. They are the measure
of perfection in MECH that we should all strive to become. These Elders of
Legend will be set aside and honored. And so the people of this realm will
know they are in the presence of Legends, We gift them with these..." The
Grand hall doors flew open and MECH techs rolled in 6 new suits of Armor.
Each of strengthened iridium and decalled in Black and White polished to a
mirrored shine. On the left breast of each suit the insignia of the Legends
was engraved. A Globe crushed in the palm of a Metal fist. The insignia was
surrounded by writing....WITH THEIR AID...THE WORLD WE WILL BRING TO ITS
KNEES.

   "Wear them Proudly my Brothers."

  Deuce looked out at the assembled MECH in the Grand Hall. A surging of
Pride ran through his systems as the faces and numbers of MECH met his eyes.

   "We have done well these past months, brothers and sisters, and we can
only continue to get bigger and stronger as we purify these realms. With the
help of the EOL and the staff officers we will continue to build a better
world for us all. The promotions are hardly finished however. Ember, Lotus,
Aztek and I have only scratched the surface in recognizing those MECH that
have done so much in their service to us and have found respect and honor in
their valorous efforts." He paused, making sure every optical sensor was
focused on him. "The majority of the Flight Commanders have been assigned,
and the rest will be filled as MECHs prove their worthiness. Do not mistake
me Brethren, you are all worthy of honor and valor, but some among you excell
and it is only right that those are the MECH that should lead. Therefore, I
have several more appointments to make." Looking to Lotus, the Emperor
nodded his head.

   Lotus looked through the conglomeration of MECH and spotted the one she
was looking for. "The Shadow Mercs have long been among the best our Empire
has to offer. It is only fitting, that they have a Commander that excels in
the arts of War and Diplomacy. Striking from the dark, hiding in the
shadows, this flight sits waiting for our enemies to make a fatal error and
then they strike. The Commander must be an excellent judge of this. Putting
their life on the line when that moment arrives, the Shadow Mercs and their
Commander bring the enemy to their knees in submission, or to the ground in a
pool of their own blood."

   Taking over from where Lotus left off, Aztek completed the pronouncement.
"The Shadow Mercs need a powerful and intelligent Commander. One that
everyone will look up to and respect for his or her efforts for the Empire."
He paused and walked down among the Shadow Mercs assembled near the front of
the Grand Hall. He stopped in front of MECH Brand and produced the
Commander's insignia. "Brother Brand, We honor you and your achievements
and ask that you take on the mantle of Commanding the Shadow Mercs. The
Flight is yours...if you will have it."

   Grinning from ear to ear, Brand accepted the promotion. "With Pleasure
Admiral Aztek. I will not disappoint you."

   Shaking his hand, Aztek added. "I know you won't, my brother." He then
returned to the front of the chamber and stood next to Lotus.

   Ember stepped forward. "Commanding the Flights is very important to all
of us. Keeping the Flights united and making sure disputes do not arrive
from our friendly rivalries is also an important ideal for us. Wing Captains
are the backbone of that ideal. They are responsible for maintaining
communcations between 4 of the flights. Alpha Wing, flights 1 through 4 and
Bravo Wing, flights 5 through 8. They will keep everyone in top condition
and attitudes positive. As is necessary with Flight Commanders, only the
strongest among us has the right to lead us into battle and into the
purification of the Realms. Therefore, it is my pleasure to announce that
MECHs Alita and Grayv have been asked to accept the mantle of Wing Captain.
They both excel in their specialties and have brought much honor to our
Empire. Grayv, will you accept the rank of Captain, Alpha Wing?"

   Beaming, Grayv humbly accepted. "It would be an Honor, Ember, to lead
these fine MECH onto the field of battle."

   Lotus and Aztek walked down among the Brethren and handed him his
Captain's insignia..."Wear it Proudly, Brother." And she kissed him on the
cheek. "I could think of no other worthy of leading our flights, Brother.
Congratulations." Aztek clasped hands with him.

    Ember looked to Alita. "Alita, dear sister, will you accept the rank of
Captain, Bravo Wing?"

    Alita met his eyes and responded. "Sir, this MECH will serve where ever
she is needed most. I accept this post on behalf of all my noble brothers
and sisters."

    Deuce stepped down from the front and personally handed her her Captain's
insignia. "You do us great honor, sister. The MECH shall prosper with you
helping at the helm. Congratulations." And he saluted her.

   Ember then looked out at the gathered MECH. "That is all for now Brothers
and Sisters...Please return to your normal duties. PEACE THROUGH
PURIFICATION!"

   Cheers rang out through the Hall.

there once was a newb who's name was lsden,
he wanted in my guild but i just wouldn't listen.
he pleaded and he begged to get into s.a.t.a.n.,
I finally had enough so I simply ate him.

there once was a newb who was too new to know,
I told him that the chamber was the best place to go.
he asked what went on behind those closed doors,
so I told him they simply practice there methods.
he told me not to feeb him so i said no problem.
I can't recall his name but he fought like a coward,
I don't believe that he will be back any time soon.
Simply because i made him look like a baffoon.

My last one is the biggest tale of woe,
It wasn't his fault he simply didn't know.
so he was bad mouthing evils,
said he would rid the world of us.
I asked him if i could feeb him and he said I don't know.
asked me what it was so i said it was something good,
like haste or bless so he said i could.
I don't recall why but he said goodbye,
and then threw himself to the rats below.

The Sealing of the Catacombs
(submitted by: UDL Charon)

The following is taken from the UDL/Jedi Praxium Skirmishes:

  Bay unrolled the scroll that had come from Shurg. The Ferryman read the
words scribed by the Arch-Lich himself.

  "Brother...Esh's latest report is wonderful news. I have consulted with
the other officers and have devised a plan. The fourteen major entrances to
the catacombs would spread our armies too thin. When the final assault on
the keep takes place, we will need the full strength of our host.
Therefore...I must ask a difficult task of you. A ward of rotting needs be
placed at each entrance. I want the task completed ere the week has expired,
as word is that Warderick has sent for several shipments. Veridienne's
network tells us that if we can keep these shipments out, Warderick shall
have no choice but to begin using their food stores. We must keep these
shipments out. May Myrkul's cold hand chill your heart, my Boatsman and
brother."

  Bay turned from Esh. The ghost spy quietly awaited his orders. Bay knew
that what Shurg asked would be extremely difficult. A ward of rotting spell
would normally simply a hard task, however placing fourteen within a week,
this would require great power and concentration. And....no doubt any Jedi
that should come upon him while he rested would be more than a serious
challenge. But Shurg had made the decision, so Bay now would follow it
through.

  The entrance he stood near now was but two hours hard ride from the
Praxium's walls, and looked to be nothing but an ordinary ravine. However,
as with all the Catacomb's entrances, things were not what they appeared.
Bay sent Esh on to lead the detachment to a safe haven. The detachment would
await Bay's return, as he could travel faster alone.

  He seated himself above the entrance, and prepared himself to cast the
first spell. From with his cloak he removed the finger bones of a Kef, the
ash from a burned basilisk, the wings from two stirges, and a piece of a
shambling mound. Patting the shambling mound piece flat, he spread the ashes
and wings above it. Mumbling a spell he picked up the Kef bones and shook
them in his hand. The mix began to glow red and congeal, forming a cake.
Bay cast the stones down upon the cake and stared at the form they created.
He drew those runes in the ground to match the bones pattern perfectly. The
runes took on a glowing hue of their own, which is when Bay picked the cake
up and ate it. It was the single most foul taste ever created, however this
part of the spell was the key.

  The spell completed he stood and sensed the power of the runes he had cast
on his entrance. It would not affect any person. Nor most mounts that the
Jedi had...as usually they were connected to their Jedi master through the
force which would be enough to protect them. However no food...no other
livestock...no grain...nothing else would pass unaffected. Any food or
livestock attempting to pass through the entrance would be rotted and decayed
within moments of passing the entrance. No foodstuff would reach the Keep
through this entrance again, as long as Bay walked this plane. And there was
the key. Bay had linked this spell to his own magical energies to guard this
spell by eating the warding mixture, as he would do with all the spells. The
Ferryman of the UDL felt drained, however he could not rest till his task was
complete. Myrkul would assure that his energies returned in time. He turned
to make his way to the next entrance, one of fourteen down.

***

  Bay appeared out of the fog near Esh looking tired.

  "Lord!" Esh ran to offer his support, however Bay held his hand up to
decline the help.

  "I will be fine. Ready the detachment."

  As Esh hurried off to have Bay's forces prepare to be underway, Bay took
the time to rest. The fourteen entrances were all guarded by the Ward of
Rotting spell, and each linked to the Ferryman. The Jedi may have other
small entrances they could take small amounts into and out of, however with
all the major entrances sealed, they would not be able to keep up with their
food needs. They're food stores would slowly diminish, and that would serve
the UDL well.

  Bay mounted his Nightmare and gave the signal. His detachment fell in
behind as they headed out over the hills. Garatsel was a few days ride
away...and Bay intended to pick up where he left off there. He would not let
so much as an ant escape the death of that village. The fear around the
Jedi's Keep was building, and Bayomon's name was being whispered around the
countryside now. Some said the Jedi would save them. Some said the Force
would prevail. Others said that they felt doom in the wind and that the UDL
could never be stopped. Then there were those who said nothing, they simply
packed themselves and all that they could carry and ran far away. They were
probably the smartest ones.

~Bane of the Jedi PraxiumLady Troubles
(submitted by: Aluric)

             Aluric had come from the garden and was headed for this personal
library, he didn't make it. His thoughts had been some what scattered with
his proposal of courtship to the lady Fair Star. Even though he would know
the instant she made her choice, he now was consumed with fretting over the
details, the minutia. The spells the flasks contained where variable, save
the specifics he had planed for. He only hoped the ties to her mental
state, when she opened them would bring the desired effects he had in mind.
What a fool he had been to think he could trust himself in that fluctuating
environment. Maybe he should have chosen something more structured. Maybe
he should have just used something simple, less dramatic. Maybe he should
have kept his secret, taken it to his grave. With that last thought he
walked into the castle wall.

         Picking himself up from the ground where he sat, he wondered anew at
the wisdom of his getting emotional. Nothing felt so right since his
release from his priestly vows. But nothing had ever left him this rattled
since seeing Aurora; after being freed by his demon (but that was the dark
ones mistake) . What was he supposed to be doing, he remembered he had a
task to do but not the why or wherefore. Walking into the keep, his page
came up and started rattling something about the arena. "For the love of the
heavens, that was what he had forgotten"; was his thought as he bolted for
the stables.

         As usual the groom had the old roan saddled and ready by the time
Aluric had made the barn door. Jumping for the saddle the rider spurred the
horse towards the tower in which he resided. His prayers answered, his aid
de camp met him in the midst of the parade ground with the bag that held his
combat gear. The mount spun once more for Mystria' Gate; at the knee command
of it's rider, nickering in protest. "I am sorry for the spurs old timer
but I need your speed and help to make up for another of my errors. Lets get
clear from here". Snapping a salute to his aid Aluric set into a hard gallop
through the gates, saluting the sentries as he went out into the night.
Once through the gate and clear of the view of the sentries Aluric spelled
his mount through to the city of Triboar coming through the dimension door
completely intact. Calming his mount as it settled into a trot heading for
the arena. "Sorry 'bout the jump start old fellow, but I can not keep a lady
waiting. I promise I'll let you lead the way back. "His mount was still
protesting however mildly, when Aluric dismounted out side the arena.
Taking his bag and tack he loosed the mount into the Triboar night. "Ok I'll
take it from here, have a safe trip back, assuming I haven't made you too
mad, you'll go home eventually". The morgan's ears laid back against his
head, and he blew Aluric a long "raspberry". "Fine be that way, but don't
bite the stable hand when you do get back. I am sure he knows what you
really want, just go home like a good fellow will you." The horse turned
and trotted of towards Red Larch, and Aluric went into the arena.

        Moving towards the far end, he found Mishikal waiting, They had
begun to discuss the preliminaries when she received a call to arms.
Apologizing for delaying their competition match, she took her leave.
Aluric was lost in thought ,wondering about the Lady Fair, and stumbled into
a corner ambush by a thief and its pet bullets. Having no desire for this
distraction, with no taste for killing, he invized himself and prepared to
depart. The door was further than expected thou. Aluric was just to the
door way when one of the "Fiend" clan jumped and blasted the unprotected
Aluric to the gate. Dazed and burnt crisp, Aluric proceeded with the long
walk to the inn. Since it was the only safe place to rest and recuperate.

          Along the way he found a cleverly disguised passage into the trees.
Even that could not attract the bewildered knight.  "This course of events;
Aluric thought is most unfamiliar. Normally Iwould just jump at the chance
to check this out but not today". Before long Aluric found himself outside
the inn, with no room available! "What manner of discord be this? "Lo in
the inn please clear the door!" Receiving no response, Aluric's first
thought was there was some problem inside and reaching for his mace, he
quietly drew forth the bludgeon. Listening attentively to the wooden door.
The "problem became all too clear. It was a group of the mechanized forces
crowding the door way. He sheathed the magical metal encased mass weapon
and called within. "Would the servants of "Duax Machina" be so kind as to
clear the door for others!" As was typical the servants of the great
computer moved aside just enough to make room for the one. Once inside he
paid his fee and set about fixing the damage and memorizing his magics.

        The distraction of his obsessed worry over the anticipated response
from the Lady Fair Star made the study all the more difficult. Not able to
concentrate properly, his attention was momentarily redirected to the
activity at the nearby door. The Mech's had nearly taken over the entire
inn. "Most unusual." he thought. Aluric could hear the clamoring of the
metal contacts within their cranium cavities, nearly in unison, totally
syncopated. Their numbers where so great in fact that any "non mechanized
unit" could plainly hear their thoughts. With all his experiences with the
one identified as "Mech Havoc", Aluric could not remember anything like
this. They where all a flutter with their recent victory in the arena.
There would be no living in peace with this new fuel for their pompous
posturing now. Aluric attempted to return to his task at hand.

         He was about to depart when a quiet mental call came from Mishikal,
she was not needed after all, and would Aluric care to continue their match?
Well he was out and about, why not. It might help him, having a welcome
distraction. Aluric, presented himself at the arena and was shown back to
their former corner. Mishikal was still concerned for his lack of "proper
armor" as she called it. He reminded her of his commitment to the principals
of the paladin. Mishikal felt that paladin principals had no place on the
ladder as it where. Aluric did not try to dissuade her, but set to the task
at hand. The bullets where set lose on the pretty lady. She moved for
position, heading to the north east doorway, round the near corner. Aluric
recognized the move and the tactics, Fair Star had tought him. Seemed this
would be an all to easy defeat of the poor girl. Shame she would go to her
bridal bed, bruised and bled. Aluric went round the corner in something less
than an attentive manner, preparing to bury the maiden in a stinking cloud of
noxious vapors. Unfortunately, he had not considered her a threat and with
false confidence had miscalculated his path of pursuit.

             Coming to the end of his movement, he triggered the spell. A
random thought of Fair Star entered his mind as he readied the cast.
"Strange I should think of her "now"!" To late came the realization he was
far short of his "target". He lost the spell then, and Mishikal closed off
the distance, casting a cloud of her own. Aluric made a somewhat orderly
retreat, attempting to use the slay living technique on the girl. The lack
of proper respect for an equal on the field of battle must have been evident,
and sending an emanation of electrical excess, she blasted Aluric up against
the wall. The mighty male had not properly protected himself, attempting to
gain a cheap advantage, it cost him dearly. Too late Aluric globed himself
in protection. The onslaught of furious fanatical feminine force she applied
with such liberal abandon could not be halted so late in the dance.

          She damaged him still more, even with the protection. By now the
beasts had surrounded Aluric, and he was holding them at bay easily. But
could not now return the attack towards Mishikal. He was not now occupied
with pleasant dalliances of the Lady Fair, but with the animal instinct to
survive. To no avail. Mishikal neatly finished the match with a simple hold.
Dizzy with the pain the young woman had inflicted in mass quantity, Aluric
staggered back to the inn. The trip from the gate was a long and tedious
one. Luckily he was blessed; the Mech party had moved on to the next town.
He doubted he could intimidate his way past the blocked door like the last
time. Now He readied for the second round. Mishikal came in and with a cold
cordial calculated manner, readied herself, and they walked back to the arena
side by side as equals. Aluric presented an unusualy but legal, request for
an alternate spot. The dueling duo where shown to the north most section in
the west half of the arena. They prepped, and Aluric went in first. Invisibly
passing the long row of winged beasts. Rounding the corner he pulled up
short as Mishikal passed him by in haste and disappeared into the
nothingness. The marshals then declared a miss start, requiring Aluric to
come back out. All was reset, and Aluric entered once more. Invisibly Aluric
went directly to the corner, hoping to block Mishikal's route away from the
monsters. To no avail, the fleetfooted maiden swept past Aluric in less than
the blink of an eye. Aluric took up the pursuit, and rounded the bend to the
north passing the lady and headed for the back wall, hoping to draw the nasty
animals round to her back. They must have still been in shock for they moved
not, and Mishikal closed to within "firing range". The stupid animals could
not be counted to help, they clawed at the wall against Aluric now stood,
mad with the scent of human flesh wafting over the top. Mishikal finished
the would be paladin in 3 neat and well delivered maneuvers. Optimizing the
rebound from the back wall for her first 2 strikes against Aluric, she kept
him pinned. Aluric was finally able to get his globe up, the lady knight
questioned why he had entered without the benefit of it at the start.
Aluric had no desire to expose his attempt at another cheep kill. Evading
the question with a direct response, he pointed out that now his globe would
still be up several rounds after hers was expired. At this point he had
still harbored the hope that the animals would do the younger knight in. And
explaining it was a means to meet his oath bound requirement never to strike
the first blow in any situation. This had been the basic reason for his
conduct from the start. Though he did wish it could be different at the
moment. Mishikal took all this in, (never forgetting that the animals where
closing rapidly, and foaming at the mouth). His last words before the lights
went out for the second and final time, where near a taunt (though not
intended to be). I'll still have my globe and you'll be defenseless now, the
easier to hold. Mishikal's reply came just ahead of the spell which ended
their duel; "No matter you'll be at the gate good knight. With the double
meaning not lost on the scribe of KEF, she deftly concluded the session.

           Aluric, rocked and reeled from this latest thrashing, as he
stumbled back to the inn. Where the 2 sat and talked. Soothing his wounded
pride and body, she permitted him the "I am out of practice defense". It
might have been his repentant conduct, or his demure demeanor, but most
likely it was his paying for all their drinks. But the Lady Mishikal let
Aluric off the hook, with an offer of "another round for practice". Aluric
quickly begged out, with an apology, and a reminder that there was still much
for him to do before performing the dual wedding for her, Lady Lyric and
their soon to be spouses; Rathar and Thornwood. Besides, he would be very
tender for several days to yet come, why make it several weeks. Mishikal
took note of the late hour, and excused herself; kindly wishing Aluric the
best of luck with Fair Star. then went off into the night, presumably to
inform the keeper of the ladder of the match result. Aluric could imagine
Gandalf chuckling as he updated Aluric's record to the now 2 in 8,
fortunately they dont keep track of all the "jousting" outside of the KEF
ladder. Else Aluric's record would be 2 -1- 28 now.

          Just then it occurred to Aluric; "Does everyone already know of
his attempt to gain the lady Fair Star's favor?" He had as yet not spoke to
her family, gads but this could be delicate. He was temporarily lost in
thoughts of the beautiful woman that had captured the heart he thought was
lost to the dead. Mentally he received the call from a familiar voice. Then
he started at the realization of who it was. "Mi Domi!! I am here for you.
What is your command?" "I have finished with the mop up here in Port Llast,
could you meet me in Never Winter proper?"; asked Fair. "Most certainly,
your wish is but my command, I live to serve." Aluric stood up from the
table, and with little regard for any at the inn, took leave and cast a spell
transporting him to the keep. His aid meet him at the foot of the stairs to
his apartment, Aluric dropped his meager equipment and donned a clean change
of clothes. Just as suddenly, he was gone once more. Appearing in the
back halls of "Windy cliffs."

             Not stopping for any one or any thing he raced on southward, to
Neverwinter, literally blowing through Southwall. Merciful creator, no one
was in need tonight lest he have to stop and render aid; but it seemed all
where abed this night. Aluric raced for the garden, but she was not there.
A heartbeat more and he sprinted for the town square. Finding not even the
resident aid or guide. He became frantic, dashing from one inn to the next
searching for Fair Star, calling out her name, like some lunatic. Then it
dawned on him to simply call to her mentally.

           His fearful heart was racing like a dear at the hunt. Fair Star's
calm reply came an instant later. She was at the gardens, how he had missed
her, he didn't know; but he calmed his nerve, and made himself presentable.
As he walked towards the garden Aluric mentally inquired as to her
"chaperon". The Lady Tanessa, (Tonaca's sister) was with Fair Star, it
would be safe to approach. Fair Star made no mention as to if she would take
on the offer of a lady in waiting, but had asked if she could talk to him
about a matter of concern for her. This made Aluric mentally panic once
more. The creator's will would be done, but Aluric had doubts as to weather
he could endure much more of this life if Fair Star rejected him. He offered
a silent prayer as he walked into the garden. From across the clearing he
greeted her as was proper, she was after all still his superior, fealty was
hers. Noting the absence of an escort in sight, he took a seat on the
opposite bench. Lady Tanessa would be near about somewhere but this would do
for propriety's sake. Fair had some concern about it being proper to accept
his offer of courtship, with the situation for her; being something of a
delicate nature. "Lady if it please thee; 'tis why I have already agreed to
a proper courtship, and arranged for the presence of a lady in waiting at
all times. It also would be a personal favor to me, none the less if you
would take on the women as such, even if you are incline to rebuke my offer
of courtship. Not that you need one, since now you have by right, the
entitlement of one of royal birth, being the officer of the guild as you are.
You could court several dukes all at once, none would question the propriety.
Tis your right to seek the correct mate, people of you station can do with as
they please in these areas. I must still obtain the permission of your
family, if you should chose to permit my courtship.

             Aluric went white as a ghost for before him now stood the 2
flasks he had gifted Fair Star, beside her.  He nearly screamed out to her;
"Lady have a care!. I beg thee; not in front of me. Would you ask me to
stand by an watch, as my life possibly went down the cisterns without
begging for my life? Would you ask me to be haunted forever by the
possibility I might have influenced you choice, it being made in my
presence. Drive hot pokers thru my eyes and eviscerate me where I stand
before that! Please!" Aluric was on his knees, pleading for his very
existence.  Tears could be seen resting upon his cheeks.  He caught himself;
he had almost touched her! He was out of control. This would not do; he must
be strong, no matter what may happen. Seeing her shocked look, Aluric
returned to his seat and attempted to regain some semblance of composure.
After several breaths, they talked further about many things that night.
Still she never sought to return the flasks to where she had kept them.
Chosing instead to keep them at the fore. In the midst of their conversation
Aluric was able to explain something of the nature of his gift to her. He
had stopped her from doing the unthinkable for the moment. He really had no
idea if his presence would alter the spells effect when she actually opened
either flask. The gift was hers alone, it would be directed by her mind set
when she made her choice. If he stood by while she freed the magic they each
contained there was no telling what might happen.

          Aluric wanted her gift to be untainted by outside influence, even
his. The choice should be hers alone. Everybody has secrets. Some to be
shared only in the light of day. Still some to be kept hidden away in
darkness forever. But some to be dreamed with a true love, in the comfort of
a loving embrace, hearts and mind joined as a one. Or even as a single
entity, to face the secrets kept in the dark too long. Exposing and bringing
out into the light of day. Aluric left Fair Star then, afraid she might
lose her resolve and make her choice while he sat there. He fled then, out
of the garden. He knew her chaperon was nearby and saw his weak kneed
flight, but he cared not. Let the Lady Fair Star tell him of the effects of
the spells once her choice was made. Let her share the story with him after
the fact, for him to tell the world as her personal bard, a singing
trubadore in shining red armor. Either case: but he would not permit the
taint of his being there to alter the course of her history; and possibly
his. A history not as yet set to stone.

                  ********************  author note:  *******************

This how Aluric remembers that night, there is of course the LADIES and How
they  remember the encounters.

    Especially Lady Fair, she remembers, but please be patient, anything good
is worth the wait.

    Of course you could ask Lady Tanessa what actually occured, but I
suspect she is not talking. And if she did it would be something else
completely different no doubt.The Kender Affair - Chapter Three
(submitted by: Exegete)

Lord Nasher stood in the reception receiving line and, with a grace that
endeared him to all in the realms, shook hands over and over with the
incredible variety of guests filing by. At his side, Mrs. Nasher, all grace
and smiles, complimented her husband in regal fashion. Next to Nasher stood
the guest of honor, The Lady Nalika, Guild Master of KORT, herself struggling
masterfully to remain pleasant fresh as the torrent of visitors moved past.
With nods and smiles, compliments, small talk and the odd joke, Nalika
fulfilled her duty to represent KORT in Knightly fashion. The ruckus at the
buffet table attracted even attention even from across the room. Heads
turned and Lord Nasher looked inquiring in the direction of the crash. He
spotted Sylphee and the others standing amid the ruins of the stew and a
small smile appeared on his face. "They're yours aren't they Nalika?" he
asked with a glance to his left at Nal.

"Indeed Milord" Nalika answered with a grimace. "I beg your pardon Milord,
allow me to attend to it? I shan't be long" Nalika said in a tight voice.

"Of course, of course" Nasher said with a wave of his hand while giving
Nalika a winning smile. "Give you a few moments away from this damn line" he
added in a conspiratorial whisper.

Nalika returned the smile, though hers was a bit strained. "Thank you
Milord, I'll be right back" She motioned for an aid to take her place in line
and she moved around behind the line and over to where Dagron was standing,
finishing off some pickled monkey brains with gusto.

Dag raised an eyebrow at Nalika' appearance and swallowed the mouthful he was
chewing. He notice that Nal's gaze was toward the buffet table and followed
it to where Sylphee was now finishing her comments to the footman and had
begun to head for the lounge to clean up along with Sir Vinman. The servants
were busily cleaning up the floor and order was quickly being restored.
Another cauldron of stew had appeared and Corwin was back at the buffet,
continuing to load his plate. 'Have to speak to Sylphee 'bout her table
manners" he said, spewing some crumbs on the floor. He dabbed at the corners
of his mouth with a napkin. "terrible mess", he said, his mouth now empty,
"Terrible Mess", he repeated, shaking his head.

Nalika shook her head sadly. "Of all the bad times to have an accident" she
said reflectively. She motioned Akumu, another Knight of KORT who was
standing nearby over to her. "What happened here" she asked when Akumu
arrived.

"It was the oddest thing Milady" Akumu began. "I was just coming over to
the buffet to get some seconds on the anaconda and strawberry pie. Sylphee,
Vinman, and Corwin were up the table a bit from me. I was looking the table
over and happened to be glancing up to where Sylphee was standing" he said.

"She seemed to be leaning over the table and talking to it, quite sternly I
might add" he continued. "Now I've always had the utmost respect for
Sylphee, but I did think this was a bit odd." He continued. "No sooner had
she finished her rebuke of the table and the tureen of stew seemed to come to
a life of its' own. It all but leaped up and threw itself at the Lady
Sylphee." He smiled a small smile at the memory. "Thankfully, it wasn't a
very good shot and landed on the floor. She was but wounded." he finished
with a grin.

Nalika smiled at Akumu' tendency to describe things in terms of warfare. The
image of a bellicose soup tureen was an entertaining one, though a bit
unbelievable.

Dagron's voice interrupted his thoughts. "Nal, the thought occurs that the
tureen might have had an accomplice", he said and then stopped short. "Er,
that is, someone might have "helped" the tureen in its' 'attack'". he went on
with a look at Akumu's innocent face. He frowned and shook his head. "I
mean, that someone might have used the stew to embarrass Milady and try and
make KORT look silly" He summarized.

Nalika frowned. "Is that possible" she said, "The tureen idea, I mean?"

"Yeah" Akumu piped up, "You don't often see animated Tureens" he said

"Especially suicidal ones" Nalika commented dryly. She motioned to one of the
servants passing by with the remains of the stew and the tureen on a tray. A
few murmured words later she concluded that the tureen had not been magically
manipulated. "I think we can rule out magic" she said slowly. "I think we
can also rule out animated pottery as well. This isn't a fairy tale after
all, pottery doesn't walk and talk in the real world." she concluded.

Dagron looked around the room. "You're right about the pottery Nal, besides
the Kaaos contingent isn't here yet" he said with a grin.

"Heheh" was Nalika' reply. "So, how'd that tureen get from the table to the
floor?" she asked looking at Akumu.

"Nal, as I live and breathe, no one touched the tureen. It leaped up and
threw itself at Sylphee." he said. "Come to think of it, the whole table
seemed to shake and rise up as well." he continued thoughtfully.

Nalika looked at the buffet table and surveyed it with a critical eye. She
went over picked up a squid stuffed olive and popped it in his mouth. She
cast an eye over to the two Knights standing together near the scene of the
incident; Slen Star and Sir Corwin. As he watched, Corwin shook his head and
turned back to the table and Slen Star began to head over toward the west
side of the room. She motioned to Corwin who was, it seemed, working his way
as quickly as possible away from the scene of the incident. "Corwin" Nalika
called, " A moment please"?

Sir Corwin slipped a last bit of the prune souffle on his crowded plate. and
approached Lady Nalika "Yes Milord" he said formally, knowing exactly what
Nal wanted.

"Do you have any light to shed on this incident"? Nalika asked, ignoring the
slurping sounds coming form Dagron's direction.

"Nay Milord, I did not actually the incident, but was otherwise engaged at
the moment it happened." Corwin said. "I did notice a certain brief
unsettledness from the table but nothing more. Slen Star, however had some
interesting light to shed."

'This is puzzling" Nalika commented. "It's almost as if someone was playing
an elaborate practical joke" she continued and then stopped short. She looked
at Dagron just as Dagron, stopped in mid-chew, a bit of seaweed hanging from
his half-opened mouth, looked at her.

"Exegete" they both chorused at the same time.

"Could be" Akumu added.

"You've ruined Slen Star's surprise" Sir Corwin added.

"I'll kill him" Sylphee added, returning from the lounge.

When Sir Vinman exited the lounge area, all cleaned up, he looked around the
increasingly full banquet hall and spotted Tuvor and Ganzelle standing
nearby, munching contentedly on food from the buffet table. Smiling, he
approached them, greeting them enthusiastically. "You'll never guess what
just happen to Sylphee and I" he began, excited to tell the tale.

"You Feeb'd Nasher?" was Tuv's guess, as he munched a braised frog's leg..

"That Publisher's House thing finally come through"? Ganzelle added, busily
clearing his plate with a hunk of bread. He chased down a bit of meat that
seemed, at least to Vinman, to be moving agilely away from the bread.

"Heheh" Vinman replied, "No, not yet" he said with a laugh. "I was over
there with Sylphee and Corwin, just gettin' something to eat, when the table
went crazy and a tureen of stew flew at Sylphee. It missed but landed on the
floor and splattered all over the both of us."

"Twas probably a bit underdone" Ganzelle observed chasing the meat around his
plate. "Didn't want to be eaten I suppose?" he added, finally cornering the
meat near his asparagus.

"I hate it when my food attacks me" Tuvor said. "although it would promote a
healthy appetite." he finished, dropping the frog's leg bone and moving on to
another one.. "You know, a good frog's leg is hard find" he said waving the
frog's leg in the air as he spoke.

"I know" Ganzelle agreed. "I asked a waitress one time if she had frog's
legs, and she slugged me"

"Seriously!" Vinman said. "Slen Star said he & Allsie saw Exegete disappear
under the buffet tables a while ago. Sylphee is convinced it was he who
messed up her new Tiva leg armor. She's really hot!" he added.

At the mention of Exegete's name, Ganzelle started and the food he was eating
flew out of his mouth. Tuvor's face grew bright red and his eye's began to
bulge out of his head after few moments.

"Exegete!?" Ganzelle said breathlessly as Tuvor's face went through further
contortions. He swept the disgorged food behind a potted plant with a
discreet movement of his foot.

"Oh gods" he moaned. "Tuv you don't suppose. . ." he said to Tuv, who, by
now was turning a sort angry purple and grasping at his throat.

Vinman looked at Tuvor in a puzzled way. "You OK Tuv?" he asked. "You don't
look so good." Tuvor make a raspy hacking sound and pointed to his throat.

"Something go down the wrong pipe?" he asked. "Are you choking?" he added
with some concern.

Tuvor rolled his eyes, and then, with some difficulty, rolled them back once
again and nodded. Vinman grabbed his arm and slapped him sharply several
times on the back. On the last slap, a piece of Frog Leg shot out of his
mouth and flew all the over to a nearby beverage table, landing in the punch
bowl. Ganzelle watched it's graceful arc and splashdown. "Nice shot" he
commented.

Tuvor glared at Ganzelle and then at Vinman. "Am I choking!!!!!" he said,
rubbing his throat, obviously irritated. "Am I choking!!!" he added further,
his voice rising.

"Now, Now" Vinman soothed him. "I was only trying to help" he went on.

"You know Tuv" Ganzelle said thoughtfully, eyeing the buffet table. "It
could be Exegete. He was concerned about that Kender we saw earlier."

"Kender" Vinman said in a puzzled voice. "There haven't been Kender in this
part of the realms for a long time"

"Nevertheless, we saw one, had him in a hands to, but Tuvor let him get
away." Ganzelle said, looking over a Tuvor who was rubbing his throat with
one hand.

"Aahhheeccckckch"  Tuvor began.

"What was that" Vinman said, "I didn't catch that last part. . .Kiss what?"
he went on.

"Ahem" Tuvor went on, clearing his throat and eyeing Vinman. "I did not let
him get away," he said turning his gaze toward Ganzelle. "If Dag hadn't
interfered, we'd still have him." he concluded. He considered the situation
for a moment. "However, all things considered, I believe we should let Dag
know what's really going on."

"Not me" Ganzelle said, "It took me three weeks to get rid of the manure odor
last time I gave him some bad news."

"At least you had a soft landing" Tuvor said with a smile, remembering the
incident. "Could'a been worse" he added.

"Harumph" Ganzelle said. "Easy for you to say" he added huffily. "You
weren't pulling horse poop out of you armor for two days." he said sulkily.

"I'll tell him" Vinman said with a grin.

"Better be hiding behind something when you do" Ganzelle said.

"Oh, it won't that bad. What can he do here, in a formal reception?" Vinman
said optimistically, heading toward Dagron and Nalika.

"We'll come visit you in the hospital" Tuvor called after him.

"If we can find you" Ganzelle threw after him. "This oughta be interesting"
he said to Tuvor as Vinman approached the leaders of KORT.. "We oughta run a
pool on what Dag'll turn him into."

"So many possibilities" Tuvor said, "and so little time" he finished with a
smile.Quests?  What the?
(submitted by: Arindall)

It was a bright and sunny morning when the ranger set out to find a deed that
many would speak of for years to come. Slinging the massive two-handed sword
across his back, he left the inn he had uncomfortably spent the night at.
Striding through Neverwinter's great square, he saw a mass of people standing
around chatting amiably with one another. Being an intelligent as well as
handsome warrior, he quickly realized that he didn't know exactly where he
was going to find this great quest, so he stopped to ask someone for advice.

"Excuse me," the woodsman's deep voice interjected into the conversation,
"but could you tell me where I might find a noble quest in which to immerse
myself in glory and destroy evil?"

A strange man dressed in green with a big NW emblazoned on his tabard was the
only one to acknowledge the warrior.

"Well Arindall," he began, which quite startled the ranger who was absolutely
positive he had never met this strange fellow, much less told him his name.
"If you are looking for adventure, perhaps you should go speak with Lord
Nasher. He will tell you about a quest."

"Ummm...thank you," Arindall said hesitantly but politely, still shaken by
the man's uncanny ability to guess his name. "Where can I find him?"

"He should be in his office, right through the door to the west. Just tell
him you want a quest," the very strange man said with a grin.

With nothing further to be said to the NW man, or to the rest of the group of
people standing around who were doing their best to ignore the ranger,
Arindall opened the door to the west and after passing through some guards,
managed to gain audience with Lord Nasher.

"Evil undead are gathering in the sewers," the lord began without bothering
to introduce himself or ask the poor woodsman if he wanted any of the
delicious looking cookies sitting in a jar on the big oaken desk. "They are
training Remorhaz, polar worms, and something must be done to stop them. Go
to it," commanded the lord of Neverwinter, then sat down and began studying a
set of scrolls very intensely.

Still glancing forlornly at the jar of goodies, the warrior took a quick peek
at the documents Neverwinter's most important person found so interesting.
After seeing what was on the papers, the ranger shook his head and left the
building. As he left, Arindall puzzled over the documents he had seen Nasher
reading. Still trying to puzzle out what "First Edition Advanced Dungeons &
Dragons" meant, he headed for the entrance to the sewers.

Normally not very good at finding his way around cities, the woods warrior
found his way easily enough by following his nose. The stench was almost
unbearable. Finally he came to the source....several ITB's standing in front
of the sewer's entrance. Almost gagging in their atrocious body odor, the
warrior steeled his fraying discipline, and strode boldly past them and into
the sewers.

"Stop!," said a deep metallic voice. "Do you have a badge?," asked an
eighteen foot tall metal giant blocking the doorway.

"Badges?!? I don't need no stinking badges!!," yelled Arindall before he
realized what he was saying. "Pardon me for that outburst, but no, I do not
own a badge."

"No entrance without a badge," the metal giant grumbled.

"Couldn't you just let me sneak by this once? I am trying to get started on
this quest so I can see what it's like. Just this once?," asked the ranger.

"Look man," the iron golem said, "I don't make the rules. Nasher says no one
without a badge gets in. Give me a break okay? I'm just doing my job. If
you want entrance to the sewers, you must have a badge, or get past me and my
friends," the metal giant finished ominously as many other metal and stone
giants began to surround the lone ranger.

Since he was out of silver bullets, and Tonto had skipped town on him
earlier, Arindall decided that perhaps diplomacy was probably the best choice
in a situation like this. Ever the diplomat, the smooth-tongued woodsman
managed to convince the stone and metal guardians to let him pass through, by
emphasizing his points with the magical two-handed sword -Dracslayer-.

After leaving the golems to sort themselves out, the ranger quickly
resheathed -Dracslayer- and began looking around. Suddenly, he was attacked
from all sides by monsters of every variety and description. A large
orb-like creature with many eyes began looking at the trapped woodsman.
Instantly, beams of light shot out of the eyes striking Arindall.

Pain wracking his body, Arindall managed to unsheathe -Dracslayer- once more.
"Quit staring at me!!," the ranger yelled leaping at the beholder and cleanly
cleaving it in half. Though adrenaline rushed through him, the warrior knew
he was doomed if he did not do something soon. Calling upon powers learned
through much study from several night courses at a local university and an
instructional tape called "Hooked on Magic Works for Me!", Arindall unleashed
a massive bolt of lightning which tore from his hands striking down all the
monsters in his path, except for the metal giant looming ahead.

Emboldened by the number of downed enemies, the ranger made short work of the
remaining golems then sat back to view his handy work as he leaned on his
sword and breathed heavily. After getting his second wind, Arindall once
more slung his sword across his back. Then looking over at the now
disentangled golems from his first encounter in the sewers, he shouted
"Badges! Ha! I told you I didn't need a badge!". As he took a step
forward, the ranger suddenly could sense the teleporter trap he had just
walked into. The room began to swirl into a chaos of colors and images. The
last clear thing Arindall could make out, was the horrible smile the iron
golem's lips had twisted into.

Awakening outside the sewers, the warrior could not help having felt cheated
out of the effort he had put into getting inside the sewers. Feeling
somewhat wretched from his dealings with golems and teleporters, the ranger
headed to an inn and laid down for a nap.

After a restful sleep, Arindall once more gathered his belongings together,
slung his sword across his back, and left the inn. Looking at the sky, the
ranger could quickly tell that it would be dark soon. However, sufficiently
rested, he felt no worry about traveling in the night.

Thinking to himself that he needs must find a better source for a quest than
the Lord of Neverwinter, Arindall wandered the city aimlessly. Eventually,
his wanderings took him to a small group discussing adventures. Walking up
to them quietly, carefully searching their midst for that strange man with
the NW and not seeing him, the ranger quickly joined their conversation.

"Pardon me, but could any of you tell me of where I might find a quest?,' the
woodsman asked politely.

After several moments of arguing and discussion, they finally suggested he go
to the wharves and ask around. Thanking them for their sound advice,
Arindall headed straight for the Wharves.

Moments later, he had arrived at his destination and began his aimless
wanderings again, this time looking for some kind of plot device to land in
his lap and let him no where he should go. After twenty minutes of
searching, the ranger realized this was not going to happen (because he was
smart as well as handsome). About to look elsewhere, something strange
caught his eye. A small dog-like humanoid ran out into the street, and began
jumping up and down pointing and yelling in a strange growling language.

Suddenly realizing the being was a kobold, the woodsman pulled out his copy
of the "Woodsman's Guide to Languages of Dog-Like Men Jumping Up and Down,
Pointing and Yelling in a Growling Speech". Having wondered why he didn't
think of it before since he had used it so many times in the past, Arindall
quickly discovered what the small being was trying to say.

"Hey you! Yeah you! Big, ugly, non-dog-like guy! Hey! Are you looking for
a quest? I heard you were looking for a quest!," the ugly little beast
exclaimed.

"Why yes," the ranger replied in the same dog-like barking that passed as
it's language. "I am seeking a noble quest."

The dog man ran up to the tall warrior. "Well....if you give me 10 platinum
I'll tell ya where to find the greatest quest in the world."

Suddenly excited at this prospect, the woodsman quickly handed over the
money. "Now. Tell me. Where is this mighty quest?"

"To try and get your money back!," the dog man yelled and gave a swift hard
kick to the ranger's shin, then turning quickly and running off into the
night, leaving the poor hero grabbing his injured leg and yelling curses into
the rapidly descending dark.

Hours later, long after the kobold had forgotten about the dumb human it had
tricked, a large shadow arose over the humanoid's hiding place. Suddenly the
evil creature couldn't breathe, it's air passage being cut off by the large
hand that was now crushing it's throat.

Attempting miserably to make a cry for mercy, it gasped out a few grunts.
Momentarily loosening his hold, Arindall looked the creature in the eye and
asked, "What?"

"Please...," the kobold gasped struggling for air. "I can tell
you...(gasp)...where a real...(gasp)..quest is."

The irate ranger stared long and hard at the wretched creature, then
demanded, "Tell me."

Quickly the beast illustrated a tale of a poor maiden who made candles for a
living but ran out of tallow, and thus ran out of the means to support
herself and her starving brothers and sisters whom she supported on her own.
The kobold told the woodsman that she had set out to find some candles to
sell so that her siblings could eat. Unfortunately, she had been kidnapped
by an evil undead creature known as a Dracolich while on her way to Luskan
where she had heard about some candles.

Moved by the compelling tale, the kind-hearted and handsome ranger allowed
the kobold to flee with it's life, and gathered his things to head out to
free the maiden.

With masterful skill only a lord of the wilderness (or someone with all the
maps) could manage, Arindall eventually found himself on the edges of Port
Llast. Using tracking abilities so phenomenal that he could track the ghost
of a thief, the ranger quickly found the room in which the evil Dracolich had
kidnapped the maiden.

Peeking through the keyhole, the warrior discovered much to his dismay that
the evil creature had invited it's relatives over for a quick bite...namely
the maiden. Seeing that they were already setting out the silverware and
dishes, the ranger charged into the room. The surprised dracs fell before
the might the magical sword -Dracslayer-, and to their own greed as they
tried to toast the nimble woodsman to a nice golden brown, but instead
toasted each other. Finally, it was down to the warrior and the dracolich
who had kidnapped the maiden.

"You have killed my family.....again," the undead beast admitted reluctantly
(because they were already technically dead before our hero got there). "You
will now be a lite snack for your foolissshnessss, " it hissed menacingly.

"My foolishness!? I'm not the one with drool hanging off his lip!," Arindall
shouted as he called down a powerful spell upon the creature. The magic flew
towards the monster striking it squarely in the head, and suddenly big
glowing letters appeared in the sky pronouncing..."DRACOLICH IS STUPID!".

Drool hanging from it's lower fang, the now much dumber creature ignored the
ranger freeing the woman as it tried to count how many attacks it was
supposed to take.

Slashing the ropes binding her, and picking her up in his strong yet handsome
arms, the warrior carried the now unconscious maiden out of the room to the
safety of the Port Llast inn. After several moments of pondering the moral
dilemma of waking up the girl or leaving her to rest, the ranger finally
decided to let her sleep the nightmarish ordeal off.

Leaving the beautiful young woman sleeping fitfully on the bed, Arindall
grabbed his pack and his sword and headed out toward the Luskan Outpost.
Again using god-like skills and well-marked maps, the ranger soon found
himself in the Luskan Outpost overhearing two travelers speak of several
special candles guarded by a terrible beast. Ignoring the danger, the
woodsman used his tracking ability to follow the minuscule wax trail left by
melting candles.

Bypassing many dangerous foes, the warrior finally tracked the trail to a
door. Listening carefully with his ear pressed to the wood, he could hear
words being mumbled inside. Calling once more upon his magic, the ranger
wove a spell to make his every movement as quick as thought. Rushing into
the room at an inhuman speed, Arindall charged the surprised monsters.

Noticing two of the deadly eyeball spheres that he had faced earlier in the
sewers, the experienced warrior quickly decimated them before they could
direct their stares at him. After seeing their two most powerful allies go
down, the rest looked hesitant about attacking the speedy ranger. Seeing
their dilemma and being good-natured to a fault, the woodsman stated, "I will
just use my left thumb upon you...because my right one is much too powerful."

Not realizing his seriousness, the evil minions felt much relieved and
charged toward the warrior who stood facing them with one arm behind his back
and his left thumb extended towards them. For the sake of children reading
this, we will skip by the next bloody scenes that occurred. Needless to say,
Arindall finished the last of the enemies and wiped off his thumb on one of
them. Suddenly he noticed several candles before him. All were lit, and
tension hung thick in the air. It almost seemed as if someone asked him
which candle to extinguish first. Hesitating for but the slightest of
moments, he quickly doused one, and then them all. Images began forming
about great sea battles and hordes of monsters rising up to sweep Neverwinter
and Waterdeep under it's evil tide. Diligent and focused in his quest
though, Arindall ignored the images and quickly gathered up all of the
candles and tucked them into his pack.

An hour later, wearily entering the Port Llast inn, the tired ranger entered
the room with the still sleeping maiden. Tossing down his pack and slumping
wearily into a chair, he waited for a few moments then said,
"Maiden?...Maiden?...Please wake up. I have a surprise for you."

The young woman woke quickly, startled and frightened to find herself in a
stranger's room, yet calming down as she realized she no longer saw any of
the undead dragons. "Who are you?," she asked hesitantly.

Dragging a smile to his exhausted face he said, "My name is Arindall. I
heard about your search for special candles and of your being kidnapped on
the way. So since I was looking for a quest, I went and rescued you, then I
got your candles." Reaching into his pack and pulling them out, the woodsman
handed the girl the sticks of wax.

"Th..thank you. I don't know what to say, or how to repay you, " she said
gratefully.

"No need for thanks, it was my honor and privilege. Now...if you don't mind,
I am very tired and would like to get some sleep," he stated punctuating it
with a yawn.

"Oh! Surely, get your rest good sir. I, and my family will always be in
your debt, " she claimed as she headed out the door. "Have a good rest, "
she said smiling.

Shaking his head with a slight smile on his face, he watched her depart, then
slowly shifted from the chair to the bed and sunk quickly into sleep.

Outside the inn and deep in the wilderness the young maiden stopped walking.
Pulling out the candles, she examined them very carefully. A slight smile
parted her lips. The wax sticks began melting in her hand and her smile grew
wider until unnaturally large and sharp canine teeth popped into view. "Oh
yes my good ranger, " she whispered into the night, "thank you oh so much.
Now no one else will learn of our invasion." Smiling to herself, she let the
now melted wax dribble between her fingers and fall to the ground as she
walked off into the night.

CORGrybbn's Sojourn
(submitted by: Grybbn)

Leaving the freehold brought Grybbn a mixture of deep joy and deeper sorrow.
As wonderful as the adventuresome feeling inside of him was, it was covered
with the heavy load of grief, sorrow, and worry caused by his dreams. As he
wandered farther from the freehold, he began rummaging in his pack. The
object of his search was a small pouch. Inside was the only object that
could help him in this stage of his quest. Finally finding the small pouch,
he removed it and quickened his pace. The small device that it held was
literally woth it's weight in gold, platinum, or gems to very many people.
Opening the drawstrings, he slowly sat down, the better to take the first
reading. The metal box was small, fitting easily into his palm. The
antennae on the rear of the box slid up as he pressed the power switch.

The small gauge on the front of the monitor showed that the portal, HIS
portal was about three miles away, in a northeastern direction. Quickly
switching the device off, he continued down the path. The path slowly,
almost imperceptably began to climb.

After another mile, the path began to narrow, as well as grow steeper. The
trees began to thin, and the greenness all around him began to fade to brown.
As he walked, he began to see features of the landscape that seemed oddly
familiar. Hazy memories began to drift back to him. He saw himself running,
gasping, from an unseen terror. Falling in the brush, gasping, knowing his
death was near. Terror, washing over him in waves. Breathing, heavy, ragged,
harsh, evil. And then, inexplicably, relief. Nothing. The sky, the sun.
The beautiful, warm sun. Looking up, he saw that the sun was far lower in
the sky than he would have liked. Sighing, he continued forward.

The cave mouth was dark, ominous. Set up into the hillside, about 20 yards
above the path, the cave had the look of something dark, evil. His farie
side crying out in sheer terror, he began to ascend the steep, rocky path
towards the cave opening.

Once out of the sun's light and into the cave's inky darkness, the nocker
began to feel even more apprehensive. The air inside the cave, despite being
cool, was also stagnant, heavy. Soundlessly, Grybbn began walking, going
deeper, into the heart of the cave. Slowly, he sensed the passage sloping
down and increasing in width. Abruptly, the passage opened into a huge
chamber in the heart of the mountain. There, bathed in the pale light thrown
off by a glowing circular portal, lay a scaly reptilian form, occupying the
entire chamber.

As Grybbn slowly eased into the chamber, the dragon raised the scaly bulk of
its head, opening one large eye and staring directly at the frightened
nocker. "Well, I sssee that my friend hasss returned. Have you come to try
your luck at avoiding becoming a sssnack again? I promise you, you will not
sssucceed."

"Please. Let me pass. I am but a single small creature, unworthy of your
attention." Grybbn stammered.

"What? Let you passss? You must be joking! Unworthy. You, my sssmall
friend, must be very, very ssstupid."

"Please... I am a member of the Kithain, and we are allied with your
brothers, the Council of Wyrms an-" Grybbn was cut off abruptly by a long
roar. The dragon reared back, his neck arched in rage. "HOW DARE YOU MENTION
THE COUNCIL! THE HERETICS, AND ALL THEY SSSTAND WITH, WILL DIE! YOU HAVE
SSSENTENCED YOURSELF TO DEATH!"

The dragon reared his head back and fired a long jet of acid. Grybbn barely
had time to duck beneath his shield before the blast hit him. Suprisingly,
the shield held. The acid sprayed off the shield, spattering against the
walls and floor. The stone where the acid had struck began to smoke and was
slowly consumed. Roaring, the dragon reared up. Dropping the shield, the
nocker unsheathed his sword.

The dragon dropped his head again, and snaked toward Grybbn. Just as the
dragon opened his mouth to strike, the nocker swung the weapon. The blade
bit deeply into the flesh beneath the small scales on the side of the black
dragon's head. Screaming in pain, the dragon pulled its head back. Grabbing
onto the dragon's neck as it passed by, Grybbn readied the sword for another
thrust.

The dragon's head flew back to the top of the cavern, searching frantically
for the tiny nocker. As the scaly head flew to the top of the cavern,
trailing a thin trickle of blood behind it, it felt a small lump on its neck
shift position. Then it felt the razor sharpness of the magical sword
penetrate the neck scales and slide into flesh. Screaming in pain, the
dragon suddenly felt numb, cold. It closed it's eyes, surrendering to the
numbing sensation. The numbness was the last thing the ancient being ever
felt.

Grybbn slowly stood, still shaky from his wild ride on the dragon's back. As
he turned to the portal, he remembered his sword. Turning, he went to
retrieve the sword, shoved to the hilt into the neck of the dragon.
Wrenching the blade free, he cleaned it and returned it to his scabbard.
Finding his shield where he had dropped it, he turned to face the portal, and
whatever might be beyond it.

Ellidis slipped out of Neverwinter, heading towards the hills and a night of
relaxation, fighting whomever happened to be up to it. The young lad enjoyed
the practice that the hills provided, and the occasional gathering of real
talent. He made the trip quickly, having the route so memorized he could
probably run it blind folded.

The old hag's shack provided the first entertainment, a patrol of Warriors
and Guardians of the Woods had gathered there. "This will be a great
warm-up", he thought to himself as he prepped and entered the fight. The
battle went for sometime and he was starting to feel limber when the hold
struck him. The lad smiled, for he knew the inevitable would come, late in
fights, it usually did. Now it would be sit back and watch, to see if any
besides Malhavok knew how to kill.

It was then that the esp hit him. ITB Maniac with a request for a ladder
fight on the Grim Ladder. Ellidis shook his head, the last time he was in a
free for all in the shack, the one known as Maniac pressured him endlessly
for a match. This he did not want, so he quickly replied that he was about
to die in the fight and would gladly run out to Triboar after and meet him
there. The reply came back positive from Maniac and true to his word,
Ellidis died to a banshee's bite and started on the way to Triboar, knowing
that he would not have to hear the ITB pester him about the fight he had
agreed to.

The trip went quick, a few fights to dodge and a couple creatures to out run
and he made the Triboar Inn. Give me two minutes Ellidis said to Maniac and
headed off to the men's room to relieve himself before the fight. When he
came back he heard Maniac's voice as he left the Inn, "So and so came back, I
need to finish with her first". Ellidis sighed a bit, then considered the
source, walked over to his regular table at the inn and smiled as the barmaid
sat down an ale.

The wait must have been about a half hour, as Maniac came and went a couple
of times. Finally he came in and asked, "Do you want to do a quick one?"
Ellidis said nothing, just esp'ed him the location and the ground rules for
the fight. The young lad chose an easy fight, the griffins in the Arena as
he patience was being tested with this warrior from House ITB.

Ellidis moved out to the location, prepped himself and then waited once more
for Maniac. The wait was long, but bearable as Ellidis only had to esp
Maniac once to ask him if he was ready. "Begin the battle," came the cry
from the ITB warrior. Ellidis moved quickly to engage, the griffins quickly
leaving their nests to join in the fray.

As the young Guild Master of House of Law turned, globed and prepared to
engage the ITB, Maniac vanished from the Arena. The God of Punt, ruler of
the heavens took the ITB and their was nothing either man could do. Ellidis
slowly walked back to the inn, stepping in and going back to his table, the
barmaid set down a fresh ale. Ellidis slipped her a silver piece and sat
back and took a long drink of the ale.

"Sorry," came the ITB's voice as he walked into the inn. "No problem,"
Ellidis replied, somewhat soft spoken. "Shall we try again?" Ellidis asked.
After all, this young ITB wanted to take Ellidis' rank for a week now.

"You would do that? Thanks," the ITB replied. Ellidis just smiled to
himself as he stood from the table and stepped out into the street and headed
back to the Arena. He knew that there was no comparison in the hearts of
these two men. This one called Maniac was as shallow as they come.

Once again Ellidis stood at the spot he had chosen for the fight and prepped
himself. Once again Ellidis waited for the ITB, but this time the wait was
not nearly as long. There was a good reason for this, as Ellidis would soon
learn.

Ellidis once again offered the ITB the choice of who would start, once more
the ITB allowed Ellidis to engage first. The young lad quickly moved, the
griffins once again quickly joining the fray. Ellidis moved quickly down the
hall, turned and waited the appearance of Maniac. A smile crossed the Guild
Master's face as the ITB showed this time. The smile quickly turned to a
frown as he watched Maniac's first move.

He moved only a short ways, then stopped. The griffins quickly moving on
him, a couple taking a piece from his hide. Ellidis watched from way down
the hall, his mind reeling with what possibilities could be bringing this on.
This was a ladder fight for rank, his opponent was an ITB, there must be some
trick being played here. Maniac moved once more, but only a short ways, the
griffins quickly gaining ground and once more taking a bite from the ITB.

Ellidis moved down the hall towards the ITB, almost turned the corner when a
seventh sense told him to stay put, and he moved back a bit. "It had to be a
trap of some sort," the only thought that could come to his mind. Maniac
then moved around the corner, finally moving near Ellidis. The young lad
from Waterdeep watched as the ITB started an incantation. The spell of haste
was caste, the ITB laughing as the spell did not affect Ellidis. "Of course
it didn't, foolish one, I am globed," Ellidis thought to himself as he
quickly cast two lightning bolts at his opponent.

A couple of images and some hefty damage later, Maniac moved around the wall,
but once more the griffins took a bite from him and Ellidis gave pursuit,
casting another lightning bolt at the ITB. This lightning bolt took the ITB
known as Maniac to his knees, but he managed to stand and cast a globe about
himself, and then in a last ditch effort, he tried to fumble the young lad
from the House of Law. Ellidis smiled as he took one of the many images he
still had and moved in for the kill.

Two crits later, the second not even being felt by the ITB, Maniac was dead.
Ellidis walked away shaking his head somewhat, making a mental note to
himself. "This fight deserves a story, and perhaps we shall call it, 'One
Flew over House ITB'," Ellidis laughed with the thought as he headed back to
the Triboar Inn and the cold ale he knew awaited him there.Happily Never

Of Gingersnaps and Princesses
(submitted by: Kikuriel)

     "Now, where did that come from?" he mused, rubbing his sore head.

     "I might ask the same of you," a tart female voice snapped behind him.
"Who are you, and what are you doing here? I don't feed bums, so you might as
well get lost."

     "IamPrinceDarienofLienesse," the Prince squeaked, whirling around to
face a very unimposing woman with fiery auburn hair. He calmed down
considerably. "I have come on an Epic Quest to visit the Sorceress Morgana
who lives in this tower." He paused, doubtful. "She DOES live here, doesn't
she?"

     "Yes, she does." The woman sighed heavily. "I'd much rather you had been
a bum, though. They tend to be much politer than Adventuring Princes." She
sighed again. "Come in, come in. I'm sure we can get this over with soon
enough."

     "All right," the Prince muttered.

     "Where is Morgana, anyway?" he asked as the two of them walked through
stone walls decorated only with a few dusty tapestries. They had seen no
other living creatures since they entered, although the young woman had
pointed out a very interesting formation of human bones that did nothing to
ease the Prince's mind. The farther he walked, the louder his teeth
chattered, until he was certain that they must be as loud as orc war drums.
Some time ago, his coronet had fallen off his head, and the constant thump of
his tattered red cape on the cold stones made him jump occasionally.

     The woman stopped and regarded him with a pitying gaze. "You really
can't help it, can you?"

     "What?" He stared at her in utter confusion. "What? Tell me!" The Prince
rubbed his chin suspiciously.

"Do I have a milk moustache?"

     "NO!" She rolled her eyes impatiently. "Are you always so dense?"

     "I don't think so," he replied after a moment of intense
head-scratching. "In fact, I can remember a time not too long ago when my
brain was functioning really quite well."

     "Oh? When was that?" the woman asked skeptically. She kicked aside a
grinning skull rather carelessly; the Prince gulped as he glimpsed a set of
green tentacles sprout out of the eyeholes and scurry away.

     "Uh... shortly before I got married, I think. Right after that, my
mental faculties disappeared. In fact, I've found myself--"

     "Never mind." The woman pushed open a heavy, plain wooden door, its
surface grimy with ages-old dust. It creaked reluctantly, but opened to
reveal a very ordinary kitchen with tile floors, a shiny, clean sink, and a
humming refrigerator covered with colorful and humorous magnets. A short
table with a pretty gingham tablecloth stood in one corner of the kitchen.

     "Sit down," the woman invited, setting a kettle of tea on the stove. She
opened a door in the cupboard and took out a few crispy gingersnaps, which
she arranged on a plate to make a golden-brown flower.

     The Prince's stomach was growling like a flocking herd of wild ferocious
purple caterpillars, but he managed to gasp around the grumbling ache. "Where
is... the Sorceress... Morgana?"

     "Right here, you great Princely dolt." The woman plopped the plate of
cookies on the table. "Are you as sightless as you are witless?"

     "You mean... YOU'RE Morgana?!" The Prince seemed terrified. "Please
accept my most humble apologies, your magicfulness! Please don't turn me into
a toad or anything else un-Princely like that! Please don't turn me into
Kentucky Fried Extra-Crispy Chicken with your magical fire! Oh, please,
please, please..." He fell on the ground, blubbering incoherently and tugging
on the hem of her plain gray gown.

     "Get up, you big baby," Morgana ordered. "I'm not going to turn you into
anything if you'll just stop flooding my floor."

     "Thank you, thank you, thank you--" The Prince backed up hastily in his
chair, gazing at her with wide terrified eyes. Morgana resisted the impulse
to smack him halfway across the room, but she did take a small wicked
pleasure in offering him a gingersnap with a big grin. The Prince flinched
back from the unoffending cookie as if it had been a bull dragon.

     "Shall we get down to business then, your Princeliness?" Morgana asked
him, hoping it might stop the Prince's whining. It worked. The Prince sat up
alertly and straightened his wrinkled tunic, tapped the battered coronet back
into place, and spoke with only a slight tremor in his voice.

     "It's about my wife," he began hesitantly. "She, uh, well, maybe I
should start at the beginning," he offered, relieved. "Yes, the beginning."

     "Well, it all started when I was a young lad looking for an Epic Quest
to start off my illustrious career. Being the only son of my father, the
King, it was pretty well agreed that I had to find an especially difficult
Epic Quest, so my dad could brag to all his friends about me. Dragon slaying
and troll hunting were already taken when I went to sign up at the Epic
Quests Club, so I had to put myself down for 'Miscellaneous'." He stopped
when Morgana retrieved her whistling kettle from the stove, then accepted a
mug of steaming herb tea and continued his story.

     "As it happened, the Quest they signed me up for was one that involved a
rather lovely princess. The nice lady at the club told me about this young
princess, and how she was put to sleep by an old witch with a spinning wheel
until a young, handsome prince woke her up with a kiss." He looked rather
proud, puffing his chest out until Morgana turned bright red with the effort
to keep from exploding with laughter. The Prince didn't notice; he was too
busy staring at an imaginary splotch on the immaculate floor.

     "Anyway," he went on, sounding rather glum, "I went to her castle, and
found it all grown over in ivy. Clinging all over the place, with not a pair
of shears to hack it away. Rather like my grandma's house, I thought; I
suppose the ivy should have served as a warning. But I went on, foolishly,
and tromped my way through the courtyard until I got to a big rusty door." He
shuddered. "The filth of it was unbelievable! Simply unbelievable! Why, my
castle's pigstys were cleaner than that miserable door!" He nibbled the edge
of a gingersnap disconsolately. "Did I mention that all the people I
encountered were frozen? Really, it was the most incredible thing, since they
weren't really frozen at all. I touched one myself, and he was as warm as a
fresh TV dinner. Can't imagine why they just stood there."

     "Maybe it was a spell," Morgana supplied ingenuously.

     "Oh, maybe it was!" The Prince grinned happily. "How interesting! A real
genuine spell, right in my own backyard." He chomped down another spicy
cookie. "As I was saying, I bravely strode through the enchanted castle and
fought my way into the bedroom of the lovely princess."

     Morgana snorted. "Of course, the bedroom WOULD have been your ultimate
goal, now wouldn't it?"

     "Well, of course." The Prince appeared confused, an expression Morgana
was beginning to expect on his face more and more. I mean, the nice lady at
the registering place told me that the bedroom was going to be the Ape Necks
of my adventure."

     "Don't you mean apex?" Morgana asked wearily.

     "Whatever." The Prince was beginning to get annoyed. "The point is, I
went up to her bed and kissed the princess on the mouth."

     "Poor girl." Morgana sighed. "Waking up to that."

     "I'll pretend you didn't say that," the Prince informed her stiffly.

     "How kind of you, my lord!" Morgana exclaimed in a gratingly shrill
falsetto, curtsying extravagantly. The Prince sighed.

     "I came here for help," he reminded a half-eaten gingersnap pointedly.
The witch apologized; mollified, he continued his story in a wounded tone.

     "The Princess woke up as soon as my lips touched hers. She was the most
beautiful woman I'd ever seen, with hair of spun gold and lips the color of
the palest pink dew-roses. When she raised her glorious, sunlight-crowned
head to speak to me, her eyes sparkled the shade of purest emeralds, and her
voice was like sweet honey. I will never forget the words she gave to me,
those immortal words, each one a drop of perfection like a priceless diamond.

     " 'Get away from me, you stinking pervert!' she said to me," the Prince
murmured rapturously, his eyes closed with remembered ecstasy.

     Morgana snorted. "How romantic. That's it? That's your whole story?"

     "Oh, no. After that, we were married," the Prince told her hurriedly. "I
suppose it was a rather nice wedding, as weddings go. I really wouldn't know,
being as how I wasn't there for it. I was out dragon hunting, but my princess
went ahead and got us married anyway. She told me later that the reception
was much nicer without me there.

     "But when I came back, the trouble started. My wife began inviting her
relatives over, and although I was eager to meet my new in-laws, I wasn't
expecting the kind of people she brought over."

     "Bad mother-in-law?" Morgana suggested sympathetically.

     "That's not the beginning of it," the Prince assured her sadly. "She
brought EVERYONE over--from her parents to her old boyfriend from high school
to the ogre down the street. It was a nightmare, especially since her old
boyfriend brought his cheerleader girlfriend, and she ran off with my
chamberlain, and then the boyfriend disappeared with my wife. They didn't
show up until next week," he finished despondently. "Since then, it's been
one disaster after another. My wife's a horrible cook, but she won't stop
trying to make her famous chocolate-liver mousse. All her relatives and
castle servants are a hundred years out of date--why, I showed them a
catapult, and one of the poor fellows inquired what kind of monster needed
such a big ice-cream spoon!"

     He rubbed his head in utter exhaustion. "Anyway, I need some advice
about how to remedy my unhappy state of affairs. This simply can't go on.
It's intolerable. My dad's the laughingstock of the Rich Kings Golf Club, all
my friends think my wife's a babe, and she does her best to encourage them!
My castle's bursting apart at the seams with all her in-laws, my dogs are
running ragged trying to stay away from her demented cooks, and, worst of
all, she eats all my glazed doughnuts, and only leaves the icky jelly ones
for me!"

     "Oh, horrors," Morgana shuddered. She thought about it for a moment. "As
I see it, the only thing for you to do is to leave your wife."

     "I can't do that!" the Prince exclaimed, horrified.

     "And why not?" Morgana asked. "She's making your life miserable. You're
not happy, she's not happy, and my tea is getting cold."

     "Well, it's kind of hard to explain," the Prince hedged diffidently,
fidgeting behind his back. "Um, that is, I'm not sure how to explain this."
He looked highly agitated, and the cookie in his hand was being shaken to
pieces.

     "Out with it, boy," Morgana ordered sharply.

     "Her father's the Archbishop of Canterbury," the Prince admitted sourly.
"I never would have thought it--she's a thoroughly lovely girl--but there it
is, and that's why I can't leave her."

     "Isn't the Archbishop supposed to be celibate?" Morgana asked, pouring
herself another cup of tea. The steam wafting up from the kettle now smelled
strongly of peppermint, although Morgana had left it full of lemon tea. The
Prince gulped and resolved not to ask any questions.

     "I know *I* thought so," the Prince mumbled around a mouthful of cookie.
"But the Princess' mother denied it very emphatically. She said she had
videotaped proof."

     "How lovely," Morgana commented dryly.

     "Oh, but it is." The Prince stifled a bubble of laughter. "You ought to
see them sometime, him wobbling around in those clunky robes and with that
funny-looking hat falling down over his head! I wonder that he didn't confuse
the bed with the girl!"

     "I find that incredibly disgusting and not funny in the least," Morgana
said with a great deal of asperity. "Your wife's family disgusts me, and I
haven't met them but once or twice."

     "I didn't think you were at all acquainted with them," the Prince
exclaimed.

     "I have." Morgana sipped at her tea, which now appeared to be chamomile.
"I won't say the meeting was very pleasant for either your mother-in-law or
me, though. I don't carry much poison around with me, and certainly not the
type she was looking for."

     "She came to you for poison?!" The Prince's eyes bulged with disbelief.
"Whatever for? I know we've got tons of rats since my wife moved in--and I'm
not just talking about her boyfriends here--but the Court Exterminator takes
care of them."

     "She wanted to poison YOU, my dear boy," Morgana said, her voice very
slow and deliberate, as though she were talking to a complete imbecile
(which, she reminded herself, might not be so very far from the truth after
all).

     "ME?! But, why?? What have I done?" the Prince demanded.

     "How should I know? Failed to massage her feet, most likely," Morgana
grumbled. "I'm just a witch, boy, not a fortune teller. I don't know what she
wanted to kill you for, but she had a most exquisite punishment in mind. I
was very impressed with her creativity. I would never have thought of using
bulette scales and roper slime that way."

     "Really. I don't think I want to know." He looked very pale.

     "You don't, believe me." She cackled wickedly. "But just answer one
question for me. Are you really as afraid of mice as she said?"

     The Prince only shuddered in reply.

     Morgana pushed back her chair and stood up. "Then, if you won't heed my
advice, I'm afraid you've come all this way for nothing. You might as well go
home to your wife's loving arms. There's nothing I can do to help you."

     "What??" The Prince gulped. "You mean, just go back home? That's it? I
fought all those monsters, and braved all those Daunting Perils, and all I
get is some Dear Abby advice and a couple of gingersnaps?"

     "Yup." Morgana smiled benignly.A Drow by Magic
(submitted by: W0voka)

         The silence of the lost woods was broken by a faint fluttering
sound. The huge butterfly settled in the clearing, its lavendar and black
wings slowly stopped its rythmic beat. The hawk circled overhead as he
spotted its prey, white tender butterfly. Gliding toward the seemingly
defenseless prey the hawk readied himself for the final blow.

        A slight shift of the lavendar wing and the hawk was blinded. His
careful approach was altered and it crashed into a tree. With a broken neck
and bloodied wings it tried to comprehend what happened. Then the feathered
hunter died.

        A foggy mist arose from where the butterfly rested and and a human
figure appeared. A young female, raven dark hair, white skin, and lavendar
eyes, eyes that at the moment were blurred with tears,stood sobbing in the
forest.

        "Why"' she thought, "do I hate so much?" " My brother Zindio took
care of me from the time my mother died. He left me in Wienimers with a good
human family, and saw that there was plenty of gold for my needs.." W0voka
sank down into the mossy ground and cried uncontrollably.

        She didn't see the cloud appear from a fissure near her, nor see the
figure of the woman step out. "W0voka, my daughter. Stop berating yerself."
the woman whispered.

        Startled ,the young cleric jumped up and prepared a spell, hammer
ready to crush.

        "Hold thyself back my daughter, I am already dead, remember?"
Paralyzed by the sight of a mother only seen in a painting, W0voka let the
hammer slide to the ground from stiff fingers. "Do not fear my child, it is
really I, yer mother, dead but,able to span planes of exhistance and
communicate when necessary." The tall figure smiled.

        "I,I don..don't understand..."" W0voka stammered out.

        "Shhhhh..", the lady said. "I am here to explain and help ye with thy
dillema my child. Sit." she motioned. "I dont have a long time on this
plane." W0voka sat, still a bit in shock.

        "Many years ago, before ye were born," the ghost began," in the world
of Wienimer, There was Zindio's father, an elven Ranger, myself, his wife,
and Zindio,our only son. Zindio was just starting his training as a Ranger
and things were good. Placid, my husband, recieved a request from a clan of
Dwarves to help them get rid of a band of Drow raiding party that were making
their lives miserable. He suceeded in killing all 14 of the 15 Drows. One
escaped, a mage he was. Several years later this Drow came back to exact
revenge on us, he kidnapped me and took me into the caverens below Wienimers.
Ineptly applied magic on meself and impregnated me. You are the result."

          W0voka started to ask one of many questions racing through her
head, but stopped as her mother raised her hand and continued with her story.
"Ye were born with black hair and white skin, the opposite of a Drow child.
Yer eyes were lavendar, just like the renagade Drow warrior Drizzit. This
evil mage, your father, was furious and I think a bit afraid of his magic
gone awry. He started to kill me slowly, Drow hate and fear females. My
magic powers were enough to keep me breathing and dull the pain. Placid and
Zindio found us and in the ensuing battle Placid was killed as was The Drow.
Zindio managed to find you and escape, I was already dead." The woman
paused, smiled at the bewillered young cleric and continued. " Do not let
dossta hate blind ye to dosstra vlos. Kill the vermine Drow and let those
renagades against Lloth live."

"How would I know Drow against Lloth?' the girl blurted out.

"Thy Chaotic neutral heart will let ye know my child." The woman enveloped
W0voka in a cloud, Love, hate, pain in various phases swept through her, her
spirt calmed, she knew what she had to do within the Realms now.

        The cloud slowly dissapated back into the ground wence it came,
W0voka had a sad smile on her face, and the name TIGGUHR, stood out amongst
her thoughts.

        The butterfly rose into the sky above the forest, direction was
toward Clan Axespeak in Neverwinter. Some Drow will learn to fear the name
of W0voka.  Adrift

One Last Howl

  The wolfsong calls
    across a windy winter-frozen steppe--
       so long asleep in snowy night's embrace
       even the ancient stones have forgotten all memory of life--
    the keening howl echoes through crystal-bright moonlight
    calling the soul-brothers to one last hunt.

  They come, running wild through glass-leaved forests
     wind rushing through fragrant gray-dappled fur
  golden eyes flashing darkly in the shadow-ridden wood
  swifter than the northern wind, a wakening vision
     of hunter's grace and loping stride
  until they reached the Standing Stones

  She waited there, in the circle of tall Stones--
    like a quicksilver teardrop fallen from Luna's eye/
    too ephemeral, too beautiful for this dream-woven night
    of dark pines and bitter winds and icy mist-blue snow
  starlight reflected in eyes too wise, too sad for one so young.

  And they ran--
    darting shapes flitting ghostlike through the sleeping forest
      past rippling streams cascading down into gaping chasms--
                flecks of broken diamond glittering in the void--
                then caught and gathered back into the argent-flowing ribbon
      its path serene, peaceful, smooth-running once more.
  And they ran--
    the constant steady rhythm of padded paws
     drumming/dancing/leaping/bounding
    over the fallen leaves of yesteryear.
  And they ran--
    behind them, the mournful cry of a lonely owl,
    lamenting the passing of the night.
  And they ran.

  Then the last dimming traces of moonlight fell from the sky--
  the last howls fading into the whispering shadows
  drifing back to the gray mists whence they came
    and the trailing iridescent wisps of cloud/
    luminous against the starless night/
  begin to glow with soft-welling inner light

The Wedding - Part 1
~A Shared Spirit~
(submitted by: Thorn Hawk)

It was just past midday. The sun shone down through the pine trees to
illuminate the forest floor below. Two figures walked silently under the
canopy while in the distance birds sang and animals, disturbed by the
approach of the two, scampered among the bushes.

Thorn Hawk felt the animals around him as he walked down the shadowed trail
deep within the confines of Neverwinter Woods. He and his companion had
traveled the past two days searching for the perfect clearing and yet nothing
met to the ranger's satisfaction. They found many clearings during their
travel, but he found fault with each one. Thorn Hawk searched for the
perfect clearing. The one for his wedding.

Entering a shadowed section of the woods where the sound of a nearby brook
could be heard, he glanced down at his traveling companion. Glancing up at
him, the little bear let out a low growl. The chocolate brown cub was only
six months old or so and had befriended Thralos, a fellow pathfinder a few
months back. Each member had at times traveled with the bear cub and now it
was Thorn Hawk's turn. He had been babysitting the small bear for about a
week now while his brother was off serving the lady's will. Smiling and
reaching for some owlbear jerky, it seemed the cub was always hungry, he was
not surprised when it darted through the underbrush heading for the stream.

"Come back here," Thorn Hawk cried as he hurried after the swiftly fleeing
bear. Vines clung to his legs slowing him as branches tore at his clothing
and face. He caught faint glimpses of brown fur moving deftly between the
clinging growth. A root hidden by some fallen leaves tripped the ranger
sending him sprawling into the brook.

Glancing back from the many berries he had found, the bear cub walked over to
sniff the ranger's face. A wet tongue quickly removed the water droplets
from the drenched ranger.

"Thank you," replied Thorn Hawk pushing the wet nose away while he clambered
out of the stream, "it seems Mielikki is trying to teach me humility and
patience if nothing else."

"I see you also have found some berries for lunch," he remarked taking off
his soaked clothing while his companion gorged himself on blackberries.

A gentle breeze blew through the upper leaves of the mallorn tree its soft
song soothing the minds of the two that sat on the flet below. Marlawigs her
pale beauty glowing with inner light as she stood next to the trunk of the
mallorn tree sipping cocoa while Luthyen paced across the platform. Luthyen
took an offered cup of cocoa as she passed by.

"The wedding is coming up and where is Thorn," remarked Luthyen, "out
teaching a bear cub to fish."

"Rangers," she cried throwing her hands into the air.

"You knew what he was before he asked you to marry him," replied Marla calmly
taking the cup from Luthyen's hand, "now come and sit a bit and tell me what
you're going to wear."

Luthyen stopped abruptly as the elfstone resting on her brow flared with
inner fire casting a green radiance about the pair. "Elbereth . . . ,"
Luthyen stammered as a single tear traced its way down her cheek.

"Luth, what is it?" asked Marla concern written across her face.

"Its Thorn . . . he's happy,"

Wiping at her eyes to clear her vision and wonder in her voice, "he is happy
and I can feel him through the stone he wears around his neck. It has never
done that before."

~~~~~
 Thorn Hawk ducked under a branch and entered a clearing only to have his
breath catch.  A small hill stood off to the left amidst a sea of still green
grass.  Surrounding the area was a band of maples their leaves a mixture of
gold, auburn and russet and grouped within these were tall evergreens.  Their
bright green coats highlighting the beauty of the maples.  A wind could be
heard whistling through the evergreens lending its own song of longing to the
whisper of the maple leaves as they moved together.  The setting sun glowed
upon the clearing bathing it in golden shadows as Thorn Hawk and his
companion moved to stand on the hill their faces reflecting one of
tranquility.
"This is the spot," whispered Thorn Hawk.
A warmth spread outward from his chest.  He could feel his heart beating and
the pulse reflected in the soft bursts of green light from the elfstone he
wore around his neck.  A gift from Luthyen during the evil times that
threatened Neverwinter only a short time ago.  A lightness of spirit made him
turn toward the north and he knew that he looked toward the grove and the
woman he loved.  He felt her, her love, her warmth as he blinked back tears
that welled up in his eyes.
Thorn Hawk,
Brotherhood of PathfindersPreparing for Myrkul
(submitted by: Dirk Dirty)
The sparking campfire gradually gained strength. It was very odd because
there was not a soul in site. Its glowing embers grew to giant leaping flames
of a brilliant red and orange.
Three figures were around the magnificent inferno. Each had walked in from
different points around the site and slowly materialized, body part by body
part. This was their designated sanctuary where meetings were held prior to
important events.
The first to completely materialize was the fetid Dirk Dirty. His cruel
stench was known throughout the lands. People did not greet him with a hand
shake, instead they put their fingers to their face and pinched their nose
while forcing a smile upon their lips. The second was the knowledgable and
kind paladin known as Llewdoc. His quick thinking in dire situations made him
a valuable asset along with his ability to use any weapon within the lands.
His Frost Brand shined brightly, blinding eyes that looked upon its
craftsmanship. His mighty ring of power shone a sky blue that made even Bane
envy. Finally, Opslin slid his Elven Cloak off. He brushed his hand through
his thick brown hair and his naive grin was present. Under that smirk was a
killer, an assassin who performed some of the most mutilating deaths that
ever occured. His hand also dawned a ring that made Dirk's eyes sparkle in
twilight as he greedily desired one of his own. The three shook hands and all
laughed loudly.
The first to speak was Dirk Dirty, "Here we are, once again united to get to
the bottom of a new plague." He took a deep breath and let that sink in.
"This time it just might be a real plague, I have heard that Myrkul's
presence increases daily."
Opslin respond, "Yep, the darn undead are trying to make a comeback." He
grinned from ear to ear, "Finally, our Turning will not be in vain."
Off in the shadows Doc remained quiet. When the two turned to face him they
saw something unusual of his regularly calm manner. He ran frantically around
with his arms raised like a mummy. He had wrapped his cloak around his head
to give the impression he was a zombie. We heard his sarcastic cry, "Master,
master, what do you want of me?!"
Together they roared a great laughter and fell on the ground. The image of
the headless man was humorously funny as he mocked the insignifigant threat.
They talked and reminisced, caught each other up on their partings. Then the
mood switched to more immediate concerns. After little debate the companions
turned in for the night. Their journey would require rest because tomorrow
they would head North.
Almost a week past, and their destination was in site. The huge tower of the
outpost rose before them. Its gloomy walls and gray brick darkened the mood.
This place was not a happy one. It reflected the present times. Inside inns
and armor shops charged more for services. People did not give second
glances. Instead it was three, four, even five!
They walked in and began exploring. Soon they found a secret tunnel which was
narrow and filled with stalactites and stalagmites. The passage led them to
huge underground catacombs. Each shadowed one another to watch their backs.
They wandered aimlessly seeing many things. Attacks by a zhentil mage
staggered their journey. The air was damp with decay and soon coughing fits
broke outs. They pressed on not knowing what was through the next door.
The next room housed floating creatures with many eyes. They silently slid in
and surrounded the room. Attacking at once faster than gusts of wind, the
creatures were dead. The companions searched the room finding bones, skulls,
books with human anatomy. A chest in the corner required the strength of all
three. When it was opened they gaped at what they saw, their eyes ready to
fall out.
There it was, a gray floating crystal. Instead of luminating light, it sucked
it in and did not shine. They reached out to grab it, touch it even, but a
great force erupted spewing a magnetic light wave that pushed them away.
Dumbfounded, the three consulted. The alternative and decision that was
finalized really was not much of a plan. Stretching their arms and taking a
corner, they hoisted the chest and began to search for a way out of the
caverns.
Eventually and exhausted they found their way to an inn. The room was very
expensive this night. In their quarters they opened the chest and examined
the artifact. It seemed different now, with an irregular essence. Its surface
was smooth and transparent. Inside the shell was an apparant bone. At least
that was what it looked like. Out of nowhere a fly landed on the essence and
immediately crumbled to dust. After a long moment of astonishment, the ash
reconstructed back to the fly. The insect laughed at them and buzzed around
their heads annoyingly. This was extremely odd and too weird. The undead
threat took a new light in the adventurers eyes. They began casting the most
powerful spells at the crystal. Nothing worked, it would not break, it would
not be sent to another dimension through a portal. Danger soon was in the
air. The three decided to take this to Lord Nasher immediately but as they
dragged it along the road it dissappeared. Poof, gone! Suddenly the air
became cooler and the clouds above twisted and changed shape; skulls with
wide grins, knives with serrated edges, things rising again to fight. It
chilled their hearts and what happened next froze them.
The wind whispered,"You are the first to find me. You cannot hope to stop me.
Soon this land will die and I shall rule." An echoing laughter rang through
their ears. It boomed with great intensity. The racket was so overwhelming
they passed out right in the middle of the road.JakAbyte writes:
"Another problem they seems to be very obvious, is the Pearl Plan.  Now
correct me if I am wrong but I know that magic items are suppose to be rare,
but this is absurd.  I want to meet the person that has a pair of Boots of
Speed.  And if I do I want to know for one how long he has been playing and
how many years it took him to earn enough pearls to buy them.  Heck, a
lottery would be more fair than the system that is in place now.  And I'm
here to tell you as a gamer of about 20 years that after a hundred combats
with dragons someone is going to come up with some of those items.  I'm not
talking just plus items but items like a Flame Tongue of Frost Brand, or even
a girdle."
In return I'd like to comment on a few points and try to help explain how the
pearl plan was created, why it was created and clarify a bit for all of
Newsie's loyal readers. ;D
I do agree with JakAbyte, when he says "magic items are suppose (sic) to be
rare, but this is absurd".  Frankly, with the abundance of +3 weapons,
gauntlets of ogre power, bags of holding, +2 rings of protection, cloaks of
displacement, mirrored shields +2 and so forth it's beyond absurd, its
downright ludicrous.  Given a reasonable "normal" campaign world the entire
adventuring population would NEVER be wandering around equipped in this
fashion.  However, as we all know, Neverwinter is "magic rich" and every
adventurer MUST have their +3 weapon the second they enter the game.
JakAbyte also comments that "after a hundred combats with dragons someone is
going to come up with some of those items.  I'm not talking just plus items
but items like a Flame Tongue of Frost Brand, or even a girdle".  To which I
must respond, with a definite maybe.  You see, those items are exceptionally
rare for a reason... and in the sort of campaign JakAbyte is describing,
dragons have a treasure hoard which is won by a successful adventuring party.
The difference is, someone doesn't wait till they have the proper time, bump
the wall, and have a brand new set of dragons and a brand new treasure hoard
every couple of minutes.  Adventurers in the sort of campaign that JakAbyte
describes, don't have the opportunity to "prep" and then using the Haste
spell (since Age doesn't kill you here) run rampant over the monsters.  They
must stealthily make their way into the lair of a beast that could kill them.
Yes, KILL them, not send them to the gate, from whence they come bounding
back to face the "Dracs" once more.  The reward isn't as great because the
risk isn't that great.
But, you have the chance to EARN those extra powerful items. You will have to
work at it, you'll have to have played a while, have learned the ropes.
Those powerful items are there specifically so that the experienced player in
Neverwinter has something to work toward earning (if that is their interest).
You won't be able to bump into someone in the vaults and get a Frostbrand
traded to you "cause I got 3 spares".  (well, at least not a legitimate
Frostbrand ;D )  The Pearl Plan was created because when Version 2.0 was
being developed there were NO special items, and there was no provision for
adding them.  At player request and with player assistance, staff worked to
build some special items and a plan for administering the entire process,
which has subsequently been called "the pearl plan" among other less polite
phrases.
For those of you that haven't read the policies and the information about the
pearl plan, you can find details in the Neverwinter Nights Events area
(Keyword: AD&D, then Neverwinter Nights Events on the left hand list).  For
those of you that have comments, would like to make constructive suggestions
the "Pearl Plan" folder can be found in the Event Announcements & Discussion
area.  (Keyword: AD&D >> Neverwinter Message Center >> Event Annoucements &
Discussion >> The Pearl Plan)   I am always interested in player input and
suggestions, I read those folders religiously and I respond promptly to
questions.  Please do consider posting or writing me directly with your
thoughts. ;D
In certain areas when PvPing, one may sometimes see a table and chairs.  Many
places in the sewers often have a few of these scattered around.  The trick
is that they allow a curious advantage.  Namely, that it is possible to cast
over other walls, while standing upon them.
Assume that you are in a free for all in the sewer gates.  Since npc
manipulation is such an important part of PvP it would be wise to stay away
from the pesky golems, while leading your opponent right at them.  Well,
simply move to the table square and cast dimension door into the next room.
Then watch the golems wreak havoc on your opponent.
Note:  This also works backward, if your opponent is in the other room, move
to a table square and cast lightning bolts...etc and watch him crumble (all
from the safety of a common bar table).
Great War II Alliances
(submitted by: ITB Skorp)
The time was now. Skorp's spies had watched as the Army of Blood Keep turned
back the Jedi's. The Demons of Satan had risen and while the Aes Sedai had
mobilized to stop them, the Sedai's had moved too slowly and had missed the
passing demon legions.
Skorp turned to the ITB Lords. Xavier, Myst, Smoke and Master all studies
maps and reports of the various strengths and weaknesses of each guild. The
alliance had been formed. correspondence had been sent, received and
acknowledged. House ITB would be joined by The Temple of Lloth, The Bregans,
The Undead Lords,Kaaos, The Pirates of Neverwinter, The Army of Blood Keep,
Satan's minions, The Night Masks and The Shadow Alliance.
Xavier had compiled a list of his own. It seems there had been leaks from the
Evil Alliance and the forced of good had begun to mobilize as well. A loose
alliance had been formed by The Soldiers of Light, The Knights of the Eternal
Flame, The White Mages, The Protectorate, The Adventures of Cormyr, The Order
of The Golden Staff, The Gray Company, the Mech's The NOR's, and The Knights
of the Round Table.
Skorp pondered the maps and plans, and before the sun set tonight, the battle
plans for the first wave of the attack would be drawn up.
