Lord Nasher had recieved reports of many disturbances in Port Llast. He
looked at the duty roster and saw that Simba was next up for a patrol.
"Simba, I need you to gather up a party and investigate. Make Port Llast a
safe place again!"
Simba went out into the square and soon he had gathered up a stout force.
Rdytorage, Nor Shanare, Arta Myr, Loristarrr, Theo West, CBK Garion and
Kelsex 1 all agreed to accompany Simba and deal with the trouble.
As the group advanced to Port Llast, the were harried by some minor
inconveniences. Lizzard Men and Wolfs all attacked the group, but proved no
match for the hardy adventurers. The group reached Port Llast safely and Arta
Myr bought a round of ale for the group before they began their door to door
search.
The group encountered and dealt with many troublesome beings that day. Umber
Hulks, Cyclopskins, Giant Spiders and many varieties of Ogres all were making
trouble, but this stout force cleared them all, and once again Port Llast was
safe!

New Player Tour - 9/23/96
Storming the Ghost Ship
The call rang out across the realms--brave adventurers were needed to
accompany NWA Nabu on a dangerous tour of duty. In the Great Hall of Castle
Never, five hearty heroes joined Nabu and accepted the challenge: Wraith 222,
Lord Kar, GreatAzuth, Strick719, and SirPanther. "Ah," commented Nabu
approvingly, "a formidable fighting force indeed!"
Nabu explained that Lord Nasher had asked him to lead a search party far
north of Neverwinter to Port Llast Harbor. A ghost ship called the Gallant
Prince had floated into the harbor and caused terror among the local people,
and Nasher wanted an investigation to resolve the mystery.
The party exited the north gate of Neverwinter, eager for adventure. They
traveled through the Warehouse District to Windycliffs, dispatching of some
marauding lizard men and pyro snakes along the roadway.
While resting at the Windycliffs Inn, Nabu suggested that the party visit a
nearby shop and purchase mirrors. "Basilisks are known to roam this area,"
Nabu explained. "Hopefully a mirror will safeguard us from their deadly
gaze!"
Continuing the journey, they were beset by evil sorcery! The foul punt
monster grabbed wraith 222 and vanished with him! A bit dismayed, the band
of adventurers resolved to continue onward. "Tis a most dangerous mission,"
commented Nabu gravely.
Heading north into Port Llast, the party was waylaid by great herds of giant
rats and boars! After fierce combat, the party was relieved to finally reach
the Port Llast Inn, where they rested and healed their wounds. GreatAzuth
and Lord Kar were called away for important duty elsewhere, but SirMyrlnd
joined the remaining group. Refortified, the adventurers visited the Harbor
Master and heard his tale of the Gallant Prince ghost ship. Speaking on
behalf of his comrades, Nabu promised to help, if they could.
Traveling westward, the party entered Port Llast Harbor and approached the
dismal ghost ship. A terrified guard warned them not to go on board, but the
intrepid band pressed onward. Inside, they battled a monstrous menagerie of
beasts that had taken over the dark, deserted sea vessel. Fighting
valiantly, Strick719 and SirMyrlnd were wounded and headed back toward Port
Llast.
SirPanther and Nabu pressed on. Finally, past the captain's quarters, they
came to a chilling sight--a sailor turned to stone in front of their eyes!
Before the foul magic took full effect, he warned them of an evil presence
waiting deeper inside the ghost ship.
Exploring the eerie chambers, the adventurers came to a sealed door where
they could hear cackling female voices from within! Nabu whispered, "This
may be our ultimate battle...let's prepare!" After casting magical wardings,
the bold heroes burst open the door and attacked! Snake-headed medusas
whirled to confront the party! "Don't look at them!" shouted Nabu. "Ready
your mirror to reflect their gaze!" Swords clashed, and magic filled the
air. Then sirpanther struck a killing blow to the last of the medusas,
gaining the victory!
Inside the snake-women's den, SirPanther found a brass button. "Return the
button to Lord Nasher in Neverwinter," said Nabu, "and his lordship will
reward you! Your service to the realms is appreciated! Farewell, friend!"
And so, the heroes parted company, each seeking new adventure.

Charm Person Mini-fest Results - 9/26
Still uncertain after the recent clash with the terror from the south,
the Rakshasa, Lord Nasher needed to determine what citizens he could rely
upon should that menace show its feral face again. Quietly sending his
agents out to various locations of the realm, The Lord Mayor then called upon
all citizens, far and wide, to come not for a test of physical strength or
battle prowess, but a test of wills.
In a far off corner of the realm south of the manor of the Harpells and
near to Berun's Hill, Dangerous Donagh's Double-Dealing Dilemma began to take
shape. He began his plans and strategy for weeding out all the citizens that
were weakened by the events of the recent past. Knowing that far too many
would quickly and easily become complacent, believing that nothing could
befall the Neverwinter region again so soon, those of weak will and of a
gullible nature would be found out readily. These would surely purchase two
tickets to the annual guardsmen's ball, which was certainly a worthy cause,
and gave some consolation to the goodly guard as he made plans for vicious
deception of those about to appear. After all, who of Lord Nasher's guard
would WANT to lie and decieve a citizen? But it was for the good of all that
this was being done. And, as Lord Nasher had promised his agents, those that
had the strength of will to see through the double talk, to not believe the
lies Donagh would tell, would be rewarded with three pearls from Nasher's
coffers.
Donagh was quickly surrounded by all manner of citizens...and
denizens...that were eager to test their mental powers against his. In the
end, he tricked...err.. talked eleven citizens into buying a pair of tickets.
However, he discovered for the Lord Mayor that more than half the citizens
east of the Neverwinter Wood saw through his deceit and double-talk and
walked away with three pearls each!
Congratulations to Gwen Sedai, Zithanos, Opslin, Mech Snake, OGS Legnd,
V Darkhart, NOR Ashtar, Drk Fiend, Dex Gaidin, NOR Raider, RD Nathan,
Alisana, and Masoi, who each walked away with three (3) pearls! ;D

Embrace - Part 3
(submitted by: ABK Sonja)
"Aye," Sonja simply replied.
"M'lady please do not be sad. We shall make you a home here if you would
like. And most important, we would like to become your family."
Sonja looked at Wolf then down at her hands. Then she looked at her legs.
"No this can't be," Sonja thought. "How long have I been asleep?" Sonja
asked demandingly.
"It has been 10 long summers, M'lady. We here at the Temple, have taken care
of you."
Sonja, in shock, informed Wolf that she wished to be alone. Sonja struggled
to remember her past, but could not. Sonja became a part of the Temple and
acknoweldged Wolf as her uncle. She and Wolf became very close and shared
many adventuures together. One adventure, took Sonja to the city of Vil,
where she had been attacked by the drac some summers ago. Suddenly, Sonja,
known as Lady Corra to the Temple, began to remember things. Things which
would dramaticaly change her life. Sonja remembered her parents brutal
murder. She also remembered the words that her father often told others.
"If you ever need help, go to the Keep. As they take care of friends well."
Her father's words haunted her dreams, as did an image of a man. A handsome
man that was full of bravery.
Sonja, after succombing to her dreams, knew that she had to make leave from
the Temple to find 'The Keep.' Saying her sadden farewells and thanking them
much, Sonja left the Temple in search of 'The Keep.'
After 45 nights had passed, Sonja began to give up on her search for 'The
Keep.' Sonja set up camp in the hills on a chilled night. She had much to
think about upon this starry night. After thinking of what she should do,
Sonja layed to rest. She had decided to give up her quest and return to the
Temple. In her dreams, she saw a vision of her father. He ran toward Sonja,
away from the purest evil natured man. Whilst his running, he repeated a
single phrase over and over. "Sonja, you must search out 'The Keep' for tis
your destiny."
Sonja sprung from her dream. Dripping soft drops of sweat, Sonja's dream
still pondered about her mind. "Father," Sonja said as she looked up toward
the heavens, "Where should I go? I have searched for them. I can not find
them." Suddenly Sonja felt as if she must visit Vilnask and pay her respects
to her parents.
After arriving in Vilnask, she heard a commotion coming from the dracs lair.
Wondering what was happening, Sonja strolled over to the lair and saw the man
that had appeared in her dreams. He was as handsome as she dreamed him to
be. Startled and speechless, Sonja could only stare in awe. The man looked
at her curiously.
"Greets M'lady. I am Abk Storm," he said as he bowed graciously.
Sonja, still in shock, looked to the stranger and smiled. She had not smiled
for so long. Sonja collected herself to reply to Abk Storm. "Hello kind
sir. I am Sonja," she said as she politely curtsied.
"Were you not with the Temple shortly ago?" Storm inquired.
"Aye, I was, but I am search of 'The Keep' for my father said that I could
always find help there."
"Well," Storm said with a laugh, "What can I help you with, as I am with 'The
Keep'."
Sonja smiled and told the tale of her parents brutal murders and her dreams
of Storm. Storm listened curiously. After she was finished with her story,
Storm glanced at her and smiled. "Well you have found 'The Keep' and me."
Sonja joined the Army of the Bloodkeep and married Storm. She and Storm
became one as their love bloomed and continues to. She had fulfilled her
destiny and her nightmares diminished to a minimum. But she was still
plagued by the evil man that had haunted her dreams and killed her parents.

Chapter 1
The scene was of a think fog. The black of the night sky stood in the
foreground. Storm was soaring through the air at great speeds. His heart
rate accelerated. Not much could be seen in front of his eyes. He closed
his eyes and shook his head. Reopening his eyes his mind and body and soul
were crunched in the corner of some room, looking down at the scene
unfolding. the scene saw the almighty AkernDirth standing over Garath, ABK
Garath with much displeasure. Storm's entity was not seen or detected as the
horrible picture unfolded....
Storm could hear Garath scream at the lash of the whip and found it hard
to watch. There sat Garath chained to the side of this cavern helpless and
almost lifeless. the Blood ran down the length of his entire body from the
huge gashes created by the whip. Just shreads remained of the Red and Black
uniform of BloodKeep he once wore. He was still alive, but barely...
Storm felt a great rush. He wanted to reach out and help Garath and slay
AkernDirth for all he has done in the past. Storm wanted to speak. As he
opened his mouth AkernDirth looked up to the corner which he occupied and
everything faded black slowly...
Clouds..many clouds...Light..this was a nice place. No thoughts remained
of the evil which Storm had just witnessed. Only light and feelings of
floating. During a thought which turned into a daydream Storm saw TJaden in
his head. Storm became startled when that picture turned to the real thing
in front of his eyes. They stood face to face...
"Zeus has been at work in your dreams to show you the way...You must find
Garath...." TJaden was to the point and vanished into the air and Storm
awoke...
Storm was breathing heavy in the dead of the night in his bed. He lay
there alone and sweating; very confused. He remembered all that just
happened. Storm had seen the place before where AkernDirth held Garath at
bay. It was on AkernDirth's island. Storm knew it well as he was in the
same place a half-year ago..
Storm knew what had to be done. He would go alone to the island and take
no one from BloodKeep with him. This was seomthing he felt he had to do
alone. He knew who he would go to to guide him there and navigate the boat.
Entering the Main Hall Storm walked to Bannwyn and Lilawyn sitting enjoying
a late night meal sharing in eachother's company.
"Good evening Storm..What brings you down in the middle of the night?"
Lilawyn said as she could see something was up. The sweat had not yet dried
in Storm's hair and he still looked confused.
"I must take my leave of The Keep in search of Garath. I saw him in a
dream and know where he is. He is alive..."
"How could that be?" Bannwyn interrupted.
"I do not know friend, I just know it so..." Storm was now confident.
"You must hurry and make your way back safely Storm...I have some news for
you that will be of great pleasure. I wanted to tell you now but I will wait
until your thoughts and mind are more free..." Lilawyn said.
"Indeed Lila" With that Storm hugged Lila and bid them farewell as he
made his way to the guest quarters where HellzFury lay sleeping soundly in
his bunk...
Chapter 2
Storm shook HellzFury.
"Wake up HellzFury...I need that favor now..." Storm said softly.
Hellzfury shot up out of his sleep and rubbed his eyes.
"Now?" He inquired.
"Now." Demanded Storm.
A few moments later both were up and fully equipped for what would be a
journey of who knows how long. One to hopefully find and return Garath
safely to The Keep. The two made there way through the courtyard and out the
gates and towards the docks of NeverWinter. It was late at night now and not
many adventurers were out now. this was a good thing as there was no time
for small-talk and visiting.
Storm and HellzFury made there way onto there charter and HellzFury pushed
the boat off and they were on there way to AkernDirth's Island, where Garath
was held. Not many words were spoken until long into the journey. Storm sat
in the back of the boat and looked up to the stars and thought...
"You know this isn't what I had in mind..." HellzFury said as he
navigated into the night.
Storm thought of his history with AkernDirth...Long ago he had met
AkernDirth in the realms. AkernDirth overpowered him and posessed him
somehow. He took Storm's soul and bewitched him and held him captive on the
island while Storm's double administered havoc upon BloodKeep spewing forth
lies, rumors, and propaganda. Duke came to get Storm and brought him back to
BloodKeep from the island and AkernDirth shortly followed with his minions
and a great war was hel upon the grounds of BloodKeep. The fortress was
leveled as well as all surrounding villages from the fray. AkernDirth pulled
himself and what remaining troops back in time to avoid his own demise and
vowed he would be back. BloodKeep did this for Storm once before and the
mighty troops were too much for AkernDirth and his goons. Now it was time
for him to do the same a generation later, If there was a battle with the
minions of AkernDirth ahead then so be it, they would be ready and waiting
this time.
"You know you owe me a gold coin for this trip to this island..."
HellzFury shouted in jest again. Storm continued his thoughts as he look
into the water. Zeus....He thought...
He looked up to the heavens and spoke..."Zeus my brother above...I miss
you already and you still have a year until your return. I hope what you are
doing up there is as important as what is going on down here..Bah, I know it
is or you wouldn't have went. Thank you for showing me the way brother.
Protect me, I know I have your blessing..."
"So much for some decent sleep..." HellzFury spoke again as they arrived
at the island.
Chapter 3
Storm made his way off of the boat quickly as he knew what he had to do
here. Leaving HellzFury behind for a quick getaway, Storm made his way into
a nearby cave which lead to the evil caverns below. He knew the exact way to
go as he had been here before. What was a half-year ago seemed like just
yesterday now. Into the caverns...left, right..a quick left...He had
arrived. The passage was well lit and easy to follow. Storm opened the door
in front of him without thinking consequence first. AkernDirth could be in
this lair where he believed garath to be and he could also be in the same
situation soon. Storm did not care now, he was here for one thing.
The cavern was dark as the torches were burned down. No one had been here
in some time now. Storm took his torch and guided it along the wall to see
what was here. The chamber smelled of rotton flesh and was rat-infested. A
sound was heard. Storm whirled around with the torch and in the light of the
background there lay Garath. Storm could hear his breathing in the not yet
light of early morning. This was just how it was in the dream. Storm looked
up to the corner where he believed he was earlier.
Storm made his way to Garath quickly and with one blow of his mighty flail
the chains which bound him to this horrible place were now broken..
"Have you come to torture me too Storm?? Leave me to die in peace..."
Garath said in a weak voice and sobbed.
"No Garath, we are going home..." Storm wanted to weep but didn't. It
was time to go before AkernDirth made an appearance here. They must get back
to the safety of the mainland and the confines of BloodKeep. Storm picked
Garath up and slew him over his shoulder and ran back the way he had came.
Garath groaned at the pain he felt from Storm's movement. Garath was dazed
and in shock. He could not speak and faded in and out of consciousness.
this was probably a good thing as Garath's sounds could get them detected.
Storm saw the light of morning as he made his way with Garath out of the
cavern and onto the beach. AkernDirth's hideous laugh was now heard in
Storm's mind and he fell over, Garath toppling on top of him limp and
paralyzed from pain. Storm didn't know if the laugh could be heard outloud
or if it was just in his own head now. AkernDirth was capable of much.
HellzFury saw Storm fall and ran over and helped Garath to the boat and Storm
crawled over. He was paralyzed in fear from AkernDirth's evil laugh. It was
a good thing he brought someone along. For some reason he trusted HellzFury,
and he should as HellzFury was pulling up the anchor and shoving off, and
they were making there way back to the mainland with Garath safely rescued
and no encounter with AkernDirth, for now. This was just one battle won in
this war...
<<TBC>>Destiny - Part 2
(submitted by: Luthyen)
It had been her father's sword. Heron-marked blade, and hard won had
been the distinction. Her father had given years of his life to become a
Blade Master, studying long hours, dancing the forms for what seemed like
days. She had seen him at the end of a sword practice, barely able to lift
his arms.
Of course, when he had seen her, her father had always found the
strength to swing her up, laughing into the sky. "Ah, my little Nightingale!"
he would say. "Fly away, little bird, sing a sweet song!" And she would dance
around him, whirling and singing while her father stood with his hands on his
hips and laughed. Then he would swing her to his shoulder and stride off
home, chatting of the doings of the day.
It was long ago and far away, that time. She sat and stroked the hilt of
the sword, shaped like a swooping falcon. There had been no brothers, only
her single sister, and so she had followed in the steps of her father,
studying weapons, learning the long sword. She had never had the
single-mindedness for the blade to become a Blade Master though...never felt
that she earned the heron-marked blade. Her own sword was the one that had
become a part of her, almost a living extension of her will when the blade
was needed. Mostly she preferred to use her bow, if it came to a fight...most
of all she preferred to heal. Though she was a Paladin, she followed the
ways of the Star Lady and would seek to make peace and to heal rather than
waging war. If it came though, if a wrong must be righted or the weak
defended, she danced the forms with a vigor that amazed her opponents.
The blade had come to her from her father, and it still pained her to
think of its journey. She had been away, studying the magical arts, having
completed her martial training. The sword had been sent from the dying hand
of the Blademaster, who had received mortal wounds while repelling alone a
Drow attack on their home. Her mother had not been there, on a rare visit to
her Elvin kin, and had never recovered from the loss of her life mate. She
had laid herself down on a high hill in the Elvish wood the following spring,
and word of her death had come soon after. The other daughter had also been
away, a cleric in the service of Irreph Mulmar of the High Dales. Tynuvel,
her sister, had been killed soon after, leaving a son, Feldspar. He too had
followed the path of a cleric, and so the blade had come to her.
She drew the longsword and held it aloft, testing its fine balance,
admiring the beauty of it. There was one who needed a blade; one who was a
master. One who would appreciate the heron-mark, and who had earned it
himself. Smiling, she veiled herself and went to Neverwinter Square. She
would find her agent there. Entering a small magic shop, she spoke to the
proprietress. "Good lady, I have an errand of delivery....do you know one who
might undertake it?"
"Aye, I might...for a price. What is it and where d'ye want it?"
"Tis this..., " and she displayed the blade. "It is to be delivered to
the Ranger Thorn Hawk." She described the Pathfinder, in affectionate detail,
so that the proprietress grinned.
"Alright, Milady, I think I can find this one....and who might I say
gave the blade?" she asked.
"Ah....I think I will keep that name to myself, " the giver replied.
"You may say, though, that the blade has a name. It is Destiny."
"Destiny...a fine name for a fine blade. I'll see it delivered,
milady..." They concluded their business, and the giver left the shop.
Returning to her home, she mounted the tower and looked to the North.
"Father," she thought, "I've passed on your blade to one who will honor it,
in service to the Lady of the Wood. Bless its passing and the one who wields
it now.." The gem on her brow glittered and flared with a green light, then
faded to a dull glow. After a moment more of stillness in the night, Luthyen
descended to the rooms below. Dawn would come soon, and there were brownies
to be baked.

The ProtectorateA Snake's Tale
(submitted by: SOM Snake)
3rd day, 2nd Ride of Hammer, Year of the Gauntlet
A chill Northern gust swept along the walls of Neverwinter, stirring up
thick fog where it met the steams of the River. A coating of frozen snow lay
upon the roofs and and streets of the town. They called it Neverwinter, so
it must be that Never had come at last, for winter had the city in its icy
grip for the first time in living memory.
In a far corner of the frigid city stood a tower, as large as the
largest tower of Silverymoon, larger even than the Keep at Castle Never.
Despite its grandiose scale, few in the town even suspected its existence,
for it stood within yet outside the Realms, on a magical nexus created by a
great intersection of the forces that made up the Weave. No weather of the
Realms could affect its climes, and no mundane power could penetrate its
shields. Though incredible magics flowed in extravagant abundance throughout
this tower, no sign of the awesome powers within could be seen by the
uninitiated. Thus was the abode of the Servants of Mystery in Neverwinter.
High in the tower, a lone lantern burned in the vaulted chambers of the
Library. Crotalidus, Lord Scribe, rubbed his eyes free of sleep and returned
to his work: cataloging the day's requests for apprenticeships in the
Neverwinter Chapter. Several were received every day from mages throughout
the North, presenting their own apprentices for training in the higher Art.
Sometimes it seemed that every prestidigitating dabbler on the Sword Coast
wanted to join Mystra's Guild, and more requests had been coming in since
this vicious winter weather had set in early in the month. This was the last
one of the day, though, and then he could retire to his chambers and relax
his mind in the deep meditation that served him as sleep. When one reached
the heights of power in Mystra's service, true sleep was unneeded, and the
mind was rested in waking dreams of the Goddess and her glories.
As he began transcribing the parchment, the guards and wards set about
the room suddenly flared into a white-hot brilliance! Crotalidus leaped from
his chair, hands quickly finding the components for a protective spell that
would allow him time to react to whatever danger was approaching. He had
never seen a triggering of the wards, but he was a skilled wizard, a Priest
of Mystra, and an experienced adventurer, and he was always ready for
trouble. As he spoke the words of his spell and cast iron sand over himself,
the wards dimmed and went black. In the central atrium, over the Star of
Mystra inlaid in the gray marble floor, a pillar of blue flame now burned.
Crotalidus suddenly understood. Falling to his knees, he bowed low and hid
his face from the majesty of the One True Spell.
The voice that spoke was within his mind. "Rise and look upon me, my
Snake," it said, and he slowly rose and gazed upon the form of his Goddess.
Within the flames stood a raven-haired woman, with skin as white as the
finest vellum and eyes that flashed incandescent blue, mirroring mirror her
fiery cloak.
"My Lady!," Crotalidus cried, voice thick with passion, "I am overcome!"
"Nay, Crotalidus, I feel the power of thy love, but I also feel thy
strength, and know thy question," she replied. "I come to thee to lay upon
thee my geas, for thou art destined to lead the Servants of Mystery through
dark times!"
At this, Crotalidus stiffened. The election of the new Guild Master,
who would succeed the retiring Lord Dimgar, was but 4 days away. The leading
contender was Dimgar's assistant, a warrior-mage called Hardheart, although
Father Matt, a favorite of many of the younger Servants, had a considerable
following of his own. Crotalidus was still relatively new to the Order, but
had already drawn much praise for his deft handling of the difficult job of
Scribe. Despite his skills, however, there was no chance at all that he
would be chosen to succeed Dimgar. Before he could voice this opinion, The
Goddess spoke again.
"Thou art not to be chosen this time, for thou art not yet ready. Yet
it will not be long before the trouble starts. I come to thee now so that
thou shalt be prepared when the time comes. I bring thee these gifts."
The goddess pointed to the table, where Crotalidus now saw several
objects, glowing with cool blue lambence.
"Here are my gloves, which shall give thee strength equal to that of any
man." Crotalidus picked the gloves up and donned them. A surge of power
passed through his body, and he could feel a rush of strength flow into his
limbs.
"Here too is my cloak, which shall obscure thy form and foil the strikes
of thine enemies." The Scribe draped the cloak around his shoulders and
looked down to see that his legs now appeared to be a yard or more from where
they actually stood!
"Here is my Amulet, which shall heal thee when thou art injured." He
placed the Amulet around his neck and felt a flush of warmth as its power
entered his body.
"Here are my bracers, which shall aid thy movements and armor thee
better than the finest coat of plate." Buckled the bracers onto his wrists,
Crotalidus marveling at the sudden speed that came to his movements, like a
striking snake!
"And lastly, her is my ring, which shall help protect thee from all
assaults." He placed the ring on his finger and felt its power strengthen
his aura.
"My Lady, what must I do to prepare myself for my fate?" Crotalidus
asked. "You have given me gifts of great power. What am I to do with them?"
Again, the Goddess spoke in his mind, "Thy mission is this: Go out into
the Realms, and learn the ways of its people. Fight the evil and aid the
weak. Do not hold thyself prisoner at thy desk in this tower any longer. Do
thy duties to the Guild, but also harden and strengthen thyself and thy
magics. Hear me: The warrior-mage Hardheart will be elected Guild Master.
Father Matt shall decline to challenge him, and shall depart, and none shall
be able to reach him. In a short time, there shall be a falling out in the
Guild, and the warrior-mage shall leave his seat and return to the martial
life he loves most. When this happens, thou must have already won the hearts
of the Guild. To do this, thou must perform thy duties with great diligence
and treat thy brothers and sisters with the utmost love and respect. But to
succeed in thy future office, thou must train thyself in battle against the
evils that walk this land and earn the respect of the warrior-mage's
followers. Thou must be two men, one the friendly, hard-working and helpful
Scribe, the other a potent Mage-Priest of fearsome power!"
"What power do I have to be two men at the same time?" Crotalidus asked,
his awe at the appearance of the Lady of Mysteries receding a little as he
began to contemplate the meaning of this visitation.
"The Power of Mystra!" she shouted, and a searing pain wracked his body,
as if he were being torn in half! And lo, when the wave of anguish passed,
he looked to his right and saw his double, Crotalidus in every respect, even
dressed in the robes of the Lord Scribe, but without the mighty gifts Mystra
had provided. This other Crotalidus bowed low before him, and said, "My
brother and self, do thou go and learn more of the Arts of combat, while I
attend to the Scribe's office." The double took a seat at the desk and began
transcribing the last apprenticeship request. Crotalidus turned again to the
Circle as the form of his Goddess melted into blue flame. "There is a price
thou must pay, my Snake," she said. "Thou must give me thy name, and thy
face. From this day forward, thou art Mystra's Serpent, and shall be called
Snake. Thy aspect is changed, as thou shalt soon discover. The nickname
despised by thee as a child, but which thou hast turned to strength and
purpose, shall be thine now to bear forever. When thy mission of learning is
done, and the Guild is safe, thou shalt be made whole again, but thou shalt
take thy high office in that name, not thine own. Also, I will send to thee
another, one who hath served me well in the past. He shall assist thee in
thy hour of need. Look for him when the times seem darkest." The azure
flame flared into blinding brilliance and was gone. Snake turned his gaze
briefly to the back of the new Crotalidus, who was bent over the desk,
carefully transcribing the last application, then uttered a word of power and
disappeared in a puff of blue smoke.
3rd day, 1st Ride of Mirtul, Year of the Tankard
"Snake! It is good to see you! " the voice of Palin rang out from
across the road.
"Hail, Palin!" Snake replied. "It has been long, Lord Chancellor
Advisor!"
"It has, it has," replied Palin.
When Snake had first appeared at the tower, he had posed as a brother
from a faraway land who had decided to spend some time in the North doing
battle with the deadly creatures and evil-doers that plagued the region. He
had been welcomed into the tower by the warrior-mage and had quickly risen in
the ranks of the martial arm of the Guild by virtue of his great strength and
magical prowess.
"I am leading a veritable army of newcomers on a training mission,
please do join us," Palin said.
"Would that I could," Snake replied, "but as you see, I have a party of
my own." At that moment, a group of young Servants appeared on the road.
These ones were not so new as Palin's group, having already been accepted
into the Guild.
"By the way, Snake, I have been away for a while, on a mission to
another Guild. What news of the sanctioning?" The Servants of Mystery had
petitioned the Council of Neverwinter Guilds for official recognition, but
the petition had not been acted on due to rules governing the selection of
Guilds for sanctioning. Because they had only recently elected the
warrior-mage as Guild Master, they were not yet qualified for sanctioning.
Also, the warrior-mage had taken to spending much of his time in the field,
and was frequently unheard of for many days at a time.
"I fear there shall be no sanctioning until we have a Guild Master that
is active here," said Snake. A strange chill ran over him as he realized
what he had done. The Goddess had not told him that his own words might
plant the seed of dissent!
"Then we should elect a new Guild Master!" said Palin.
"A more satisfactory solution would be to have our current Guild Master
be more active," Snake replied, struggling to undo the damage he could see he
had already wrought. But it was to no avail. When the two groups parted
company for the night, Snake could hear his companions talking about the
warrior-mage's absences as he led them back to the tower for the evening
feast.
7th day, 1st Ride of Mirtul, Year of the Tankard
A shocked crowd of Servants gathered before the message board.
Crotalidus had posted a routine notice of the upcoming Guild meeting on the
board two days before. Palin had now written upon it: "All I know is that we
should choose a new Guild Master at it!" He was now promoting himself as a
candidate for the position. Although Palin had been the one to bring it into
the open, deep discontent with the warrior-mage's absences had already
existed, and was simply being fueled by Palin's rhetoric. The warrior-mage
had returned from his latest journey to find a rebellion simmering within the
tower. A number of apprentices had left, declaring the Guild too unsettled
to permit the required meditations. The Master of Apprentices, Kmalj, had
come to Crotalidus one evening and conferred with him for many hours, until
the sun had risen the following morning. The next day, the warrior-mage had
announced that he would no longer serve as Guild Master. "I hope your next
Master will be a better babysitter!" he had shouted as he left the tower and
rode off to the South. After his departure, a parchment was found pinned to
the boards, in the hand of the warrior-mage. "If I had the choice of
successors, I would choose Crotalidus," read the scroll. "He has the
understanding and skill needed to run this Guild." And so it came to pass
that Crotalidus became an undeclared candidate for Guild Master, placing him
in contention with Palin. Kmalj, too, had posted his declaration for
Crotalidus, for by now the hand of fate had the Lord Scribe firmly in its
grip. Kmalj had convinced him to bow to the inevitable and take up the
leadership of the Guild. "Palin has an interesting tactic," Kmalj had told
him. "He spends all his time with the apprentices, giving them gifts and
making promises about changes in the Guild when he becomes Master. But
still, you have the support and respect of the Guild. I beseech thee, be
silent no longer, declare thyself and take up the leadership of the Guild
now." But Crotalidus knew that the time was too soon, and so he waited.
1st day, 2nd Ride of Mirtul, Year of the Tankard
Crotalidus was again alone in the library, composing a carefully
measured response to Palin's latest allegations. Having realized that the
Lord Scribe was his chief rival for the post of Guild Master, Palin had
attempted to accuse Crotalidus of treason against the High Council. The Lord
Scribe, as Mystra herself had commanded, had taken up the duties of those
officers that were either absent or preoccupied with other pursuits, and now
Palin was trying to use his good works as a weapon against him. Crotalidus
knew that the Council itself had approved of his work, but most of the
members did not know this, and he wanted to be sure the truth was made
public. As he signed his name to the scroll, the wards again flared, then
quickly darkened. Crotalidus turned quickly, expecting to see the Lady of
Mysteries hovering within the Circle, but found to his surprise that a man
stood there! The man was dressed in the black-trimmed robes of an Elder Lord
of Mysteries, but Crotalidus did not know him. The man gazed silently at the
Lord Scribe, then held out his right hand. Upon the first finger was a
golden ring with an eight-pointed star sapphire set in it! Such stones were
the seal of office of the Guild Master of the Servants of Mystery!
Crotalidus bowed in respect. "Welcome to the Tower," he said. How may
I serve you, Elder Lord?"
"I am Myst, founder of this Guild," the man replied, his deep voice
ringing through the library. " My Lady commands me to assist thee and thy
counterpart. Do not fear!" he said, seeing Crotalidus' brow furrow. "I do
not come to lead the Guild, but to aid it. Surely thou dost not harbor doubt
of Mystra's words?"
"Nay, Elder Lord, I doubt my Lady not in the least, for I am wholly her
creature," Crotalidus replied. "Here, come with me to the Council chambers
and make thy presence known to my brothers and sisters. It cannot but cheer
them to have the very founder of the Guild return to us this moment of
internal strife. Perhaps thou canst mollify Palin, who now appears likely to
do anything to gain the Guild Master's chair."
"I shall certainly be speaking with him!" Lord Myst growled. "In my
time, he would have been squashed like a bugbear! I never tolerated any of
this sort of nonsense when I was Master of the Guild. I know the situation
is different now, but still, it rankles!"
"Aye, Elder Lord, it has been most difficult to keep from leaping into
the verbal melee, yet I find it unseemly to reply to Palin in kind. I shall
not run him out of the Council. He shall most likely do a fine job of that
without my assistance," Crotalidus answered. "Bear in mind, Elder Lord, that
he has made valid points, yet he has also stretched the truth when it suited
him."
"Leave him to me," Myst replied. "In fact, I shall visit him now. I
can address the Council later." He spoke a word of power and vanished.
3rd day, 2nd Ride of Mirtul, Year of the Tankard
The news had come the next morning: Palin was leaving, leaving the Tower
and the Guild. Myst had called Crotalidus to Palin's chambers, and Palin had
informed Crotalidus of his decision. "My Lord Myst has convinced me of the
error of my ways," Palin had said. "I am sorry for the trouble I caused, and
I hope my departure will make things easier for you. The best man won."
"The election is tomorrow, not today," Crotalidus replied. "Don't
forget that the Lady Chancellor, although she does not seek the position, is
still likely to receive many votes."
"Come, Crotalidus, you know that you shall win. The entire Guild
Council is behind you. Even Elder Lord Myst supports you," he added
ruefully.
"I too am sorry it had to come to this. I wish you well, Palin."
"I do not think I shall ever return," Palin said, "but things change."
"Whatever you do, fare thee well, and may Mystra guide thy magics
always, brother," Crotalidus said. "I go now to the Council chambers. Good
bye!" He turned and strode from Palin's chambers.
4th day, 2nd Ride of Mirtul, Year of the Tankard
The Tower was filled with Servants for the general meeting. The word
had spread like wildfire that Palin was gone. After Palin's departure the
day before, Crotalidus had finally announced his intention to seek the
position of Guild Master. For the rest of the day and into the night,
supporters of his candidacy had sent him messages promising their votes. At
last the time had come! The Lady Chancellor was absent, but she had
instructed the Council that she would not be there, and the Guild had been
informed of her reasons. She, too, had offered her vote to Crotalidus, for
they were now good friends. Her absence left Crotalidus as the ranking
member of the Council, so it was his duty to conduct the meeting.
He picked up the ornate shadowwood gavel and pounded the rostrum. "I
call this meeting of the Servants of Mystery to order!" he shouted. The room
quieted as the gathered throng halted their conversations.
"The first order of business is election of a new Guild Master.
Nominations are now open!"
"I nominate Crotalidus!" shouted Kmalj. Crotalidus smiled in his
direction. He had spent many hours in consultation with his friend, and it
was a great pleasure to both of them that this moment had come.
"I second the nomination!" shouted Myst, who had immediately been
accepted by the Guild members as an omen of good things to come.
"I nominate Iadris!" Killiar shouted.
"I second it!" yelled Neranek, a frequent companion of Snake. Mystra's
disguise had worked well, for none suspected the strange relationship between
Snake and Crotalidus.
"Are there other nominations?"
Silence filled the room. It would be between Iadris and Crotalidus.
"Who moves that nominations be closed?" Crotalidus asked.
"I do!" shouted Lynx.
"I do!" shouted Neranek.
"It is moved that nominations for Guild Master be closed!" Crotalidus
said. "All in favor, say Aye!"
The room nearly burst at the sound of the assembled Servants of Mystery
roaring "Aye!" in unison.
"Those opposed?" Not a sound was heard.
"Then nominations for Guild Master are closed! Those for Crotalidus,
vote Aye!"
"Aye!" shouted the Servants of Mystery.
"Those for Iadris, vote Aye!"
Silence. It was unanimous, even those that had nominated Iadris out of
their love and respect for her had voted for Crotalidus. A smile grew on his
face as he savored his victory. To be young, and strong, and Master of a
mighty Guild! But there was one task that remained. "Unanimous election of
Crotalidus!" he cried, and was swept away in the torrent of congratulations
that ensued.
"I thank you for your confidence in me!" he said, when the tumult had
died down. "As my first act as Guild Master, I have an announcement! I
shall take my seat as Guild Master under the name of SOM Snake!" The crowd
gasped, then sprang to their feet as a blue flame surrounded Crotalidus and a
second flame rose beside him, the form of Snake standing tall in its midst.
The astonished Servants watched as Snake and Crotalidus were joined within
the flames, becoming one again, becoming...SOM Snake!
"I now reveal that which has been hidden...Snake and Crotalidus are
one!", SOM Snake shouted.
"Hail, SOM Snake, Guild Master of the Servants of Mystery!" cried Kmalj,
and the Guild took up the chant, "Hail, SOM Snake! Hail, SOM Snake!" As the
revelry went on about them, Kmalj and Snake stood on the rostrum together.
"A magnificent gesture," murmured Kmalj, "to take the name of the Guild
as thine own."
"It is as Mystra commanded," said Snake, smiling, "but I would do it to
honor the Guild anyway."
"It is well," Kmalj replied, "but come, there is much yet to do this
night. Begin thy reign, SOM Snake!"
And so it began.Moon Child
(submitted by: Bamek)
Leaning against the side of the Tavern, Bamek Banesmith watched as the sun
goes down sinking into the mountains. Staring out at the now darkening
skies, the dwarf opened his backpack, which had laid at his side a moment
earlier to gather one finely crafted crossbow bolt. Grinning Bamek, the
dwarf, loaded the bolt into his weapon. Then seeing the full moon coming up
the dwarf raced from the safety of the tavern towards the forbidding woods
looming outside the small town that had provided shelter for the dwarf during
the day.
Now would be the time to destroy the moon child. At least the child would
feel no pain. The dwarf thought to himself as he moved through the forest
making his way to the center of it though the dense woods happered his
movement making a jog little more than walking speed.
Screaches rang out as the dwarf made his way no doubt from the child as it
transformed. The screaches at first that of a child, melded into that of
beast what type Bamek was not sure. It was no lycanthrope. The quevari,
that is what the mayor had called them, the dwarf prefered moon child, were
effected by the moon but did not change in wolves or the such. These
creatures changed into killing machines of a demonic nature. A mage had once
theorized, that these quevari were originally descedants of a high ranking
demon, who had gotten out of the abyss to wonder the world. Others slapped
down this theory for the change into the beast was unintentional for only on
the full moon would the subject change, and as for the rest of the time the
subject would live peacefully the rest of the time.
Who cared what they were. This was the last one, all philosophers agreed
to that, and after tonight there would be none. The dwarf couldn't help but
feel sad for the hunted but it's death would benefit the world greatly, and
if he did not kill it someone else would.
Watching the trail ahead of him with his heat sensing vision the dwarf
halted in his path as noticed his target standinng in a clearing not to far
south of where he stood. Postioning his crossbow to fire, Bamek moved closer
to the now drooling creature as it picked his scent and came charging.
Seeing this the dwarf waited till the quevari got in close then unleashed the
bolt from the crossbow.
Letting out a yelp, the creature fell to the ground as the bolt struck the
quevari square in the chest. The body lay quietly as the dwarf set the
crossbow on the ground. Then taking his backpack off his back the dwarf
proceeded to take out a dagger. This was the part the dwarf hated, not only
did he have to make sure it was dead but he had to remove the genitals, of
the male creature, for what the mages called further study.
"Further study my behind." The dwarf grunted aloud as he approached the
quevari. "They mean for making the perfect soilder."
Standing over the creature, Bamek prepared his dagger for entry only to
find a beastly hand grab his leg yanking the dwarf to the ground. Launching
itself onto the dwarf the moon child slashed with claws tearing away at
Bamek's belly. The dwarf cried out only to have his cries silenced with the
screaches of the quevari. To silence the beast Bamek stuck his blade into
the shoulder of the moon child.
Screaching louder the quevari broke off his attack fleeing into the woods
in a desperate attempt to escape. The moon child fell only a few steps from
where the beast had originated. Grunting Bamek returned to his feet
gathering himself over the moonchild once again, save this time he was more
careful.
Breathing heavily as it squirmed around on the ground foaming at the mouth
looking up at it's soon to be killer. Bending down Bamek removed the dagger
from the shoulder of the quevari. The dwarf raised the dagger above his head
to make one last plunge at the creature ending its miserable life only to
find himself unable to move his arm. Tears slowly formed in the dwarves eyes
as he tried again to move his arm.
"I can't kill you. No species deserves your fate and yet it is to late you
are to weak to survive. If not I, then another will kill you." Bamek laid
his dagger down at the creatures side then walking away from the body the
dwarf collected his crossbow and his pack. "You have two choices. One you
can wait for another to put you away. Two you can do yourself away with the
dagger the choice is yours."The Aftermath
(submitted by: Aluric)
Aluric awoke to a familiar voice in his ears and a large pain in his head.
Mumbling softly to himself; "Well I know where I should be and there I am
not." Thou he was speaking to himself the voice in his ears replied; "there
we are now, my would be priest!" "Yes little mother, it would seem I have
returned, for good or ill."
And spent too much time in a sleeping state, looking much like something a
cat draged in. But well tend to your wounds soon enough. First Aluric,
tell me of the adventure which brings you to my doorstep once more. Thou
from your vestments and the various hazes to you aura, I can venture a good
guess. I had warned you about using the arcane arts in those other realms
did I not? From the look of you, I would have to say our god still smiles
on your efforts none the less, for else you would be dead. But tell me if I
have not properly assessed the situation, please.!
Aluric cast down a glance towards his shoes,(reminding the reverend
mother once again of the little boy who would sit upon the convent steps
while awaiting his punishment). The reply came slowly, with a deliberate
choice of wording. The effect was immediately detected by the convent's
mother superior. Stopping Aluric before he could finish his first sentence.
"Aluric, no word tricks, we've known each other too long for such things, I
only wish to help if I can, let our creator judge the merit of your deeds.
Try starting at the beginning and maybe we shall see the error of your
ways." Aluric recanted the events since he had last been returned to this
portal. His assumption of the role as squire to his new found guild. His
acting out his role of deacon; performing weddings and baptisms and funerals
whenever and where ever asked. The age'ed woman stopped him at this point.
"Aluric, Thou hast not violated the condition of thine penance has thou?"
No, mother, I have remained faithful to my pledge. I perform no act, save my
own devotions and confessions within the cover of a house of God.
Surprisingly it has not been much of a burden, for these other realms have a
much different view on the use of churches and their like. Continuing, he
recalled his continued tenure as scribe for the Knights of the Eternal Flame,
and his further failures to bringing pages he had freely taken into his
service to the alter of knight hood. Finishing off with the latest
christening rite he had developed.
With the last tale the mother superior perked an ear closer, and asked
for more of the details. As requested, Aluric provided a total recant from
the beginning, and concluding with his collapse at the feet of the Lady Fair
Star. Mother superior had Aluric go back and recant again the spells he had
used, and asked if he would reveal the dialog he had exchanged with the
spirit of his beloved Aurora Elana. Aluric's attention to the details of the
arcane rituals and spells seemed to be completely in order. But it was the
appearance of his lost love in spirit form, which provided the key to this
mystery. "Aluric, believe me when I say that speaking of our devoted Sister
Elana, pains me as much as it does you but her coming as a vision to you
across the great divide only confirms my suspicions. Your deeds done to her
while alive where most vile, but your repentance most genuine, earned you a
place in her heart once she had passed to her reward in the after life. The
creators love filled her heart and eased her pain. Now it would seem, she
acts as your guardian angel. This saved you from your folly. But your
feelings for this other woman have gone unacknowledged by your own heart till
now. It was an eveil infection within her which nearly destroyed you. The
dark one still has designs upon you son; never forget that. You should have
seen the problem before this, but your heart is clouding your vision. This
lady "Fair Star" has had the infection physically burned from within her but
it cannot do ought to sway her now influenced mind set. Be very careful
here. Your attentions could drive her further from our creator and you.
The look upon Aluric's face signaled the holy lady to stop and provide
further illumination. Aluric, thou this "Fair Star" is not evil in and of
itself, something has influenced her thinking. This is evident just from
what you say of her recent behavior as compared to your remarks from previous
returns here. The angels you called upon, by means of the churches ancient
rites, came not entirely of their own volition. Aurora was correct to tell
you to release the one and ask for assistance from Archangel Michael. Any
other action and surely you would not be sitting here now. It is my opinion
that a heart felt emotion kept you from seeing these things clearly. This
places you in grave danger where matters concerning her require your sound
judgment. Aluric began to voice a protest but a wave of the grand ladies
hand stooped him from denying the obvious. "Fret not young one. The good
monsignor and myself did not plead your case before the "Custodies Vicar
General" only to have you die on some distant battle field. You are saved
and redeemed by your god and forgiven as well by those you have trespassed
upon. All that has been done for you, was in hopes of a greater good, let
it not be in vain." The age of the mother superior was now clearly showing
as she strained to make Aluric understand.
Lad we here have loved you as the child we chose not to have, you must
continue upon the path set before you. " "Reverend Mother"; Aluric began
"you have spoken well and truth but I can not be free from the pain I so
willingly inflicted upon Aurora. Had she not died here beneath your own
roof? Cloistered away from all manner of men because of my own despicable
acts? Things might have been different, but she did; and now I am banished
from this world; (save the confines of this abbey), and from within my own
church. How can I ever think I am forgiven?"
The reply was soft and gentle, but none the less firm. "Aluric, by
your own words, you have said Aurora visited you on the night of her death,
while you stood vigil for your own knight hood. Doubt this not ever! For
it was not the maddening state of your own mind, but a true vision. I know
this for I was with her in her time of passing, and she did speak that very
thing. Saying she wished you where at her side so you might know she did in
fact forgive all that had occurred whilst you where possessed by the dark
ones demon. She had spoken of the great light and the peace in her heart.
Know she did in fact forgive all that had occurred whilst you where
possessed. Well as something she still had yet to do. I had originally
dismissed this as something from her death throes. Now I see them for what
they truly must be, the creators will for her. Providing for all things in
balance, to further his will. Now you must must continue upon the path set
before you.
As they where speaking the nun realized the change was about Aluric
yet again. His stay this time had been brief, and she feared she might not
be heard, for her finial words where no less improtant than all the years of
schooling the abey had given him. Once more Aluric had begun to fade
towards non existence, being summoned away to one of the other worlds she had
introduced him to at the time of his bannishment. "Aluric I know not to
which one of the worlds you are being called but have and keep your faith.
Remember Aurora forgave you, and now you are free to follow your heart, so
long as it does not cloud your mind. We are human after all." Aluric did
hear her as she faded into that vision of the between worlds. Then another
revelation, this time he recognized the person whom summoned him, and from
where the summons was coming.
Eligiem was possibly the first of his friends in Neverwinter, and such
was their friendship, that the call was overpoweringly strong. As Aluric
returned to his form within the keep, he recognized his surroundings and
those whom now called for his return. Elgiem, and his Liege Lord Starbeard,
as well the young woman from the christening (thou her name escaped him for
but a moment). But she was not there, not that it surprised Aluric. Anyone
at the christening that did not speak the churches mother tongue would have
thought his last words to be something for a spell, an attempt to save
himself, instead of the dying confession he thought he was making. Aurora
would always watch over him but she had freed his heart in this mortal
existence, to follow where it might lead one. His friends had cared for him
in this frail state, and Elgiem's actions had returned him to this life.
Mishikal (yes that was her name) was here possibly to suffice for the will
power this act required. Of those present at the christening she was an
equal in strength of magic ability. But all he wanted to do now was sleep.
Still he fought off the urge for but a bit more, fighting to take control of
his battered, brusied, and burned self. As he regained control of his own
body, and weakly asked after those at the christening.
"Everyone alight, the babies? ... Before he could continue Elgiem and
Starbeard both reassured him that none save him, had seemed to suffer any
lasting effects. Aluric continued in a faint voice "Mi Doma? Mi domi?!
The 2 men looked at each other then to Mish. Leave it to a fine lady to
remember fine details. "I think it is of your cousin he speaks, I seem to
remember him referring to her in that form". Starbeard turned to Aluric and
replied that Fair Star was still not quiet herself but seemingly all right.
Seeing the questioning look upon his scribes face, he continued; "Now that
Lord Puma and Sir Huma where back in the realms. He was sure Fair would
return to her old self in the near future. All she need was to be reunited
with her love, thou which one of the 2 paramores would carry the day
remained to be seen as yet". Aluric's brain did some impression of a
doubble take and the pain of the telporting grew on top of the injuries
already suffered. He struggled with a thought, what did Starbeard just say?
What was that, ...Puma and Huma where back? It had been said in times past
"The needs of the many must out weigh the needs of the few or this one". So
too, he could now see this to be the case, hence to conclude but that his
need must end. From this day forward Aluric would deny all of it if
confronted. Fair Star was the object of desire for both good men's hearts.
What kind of friend would he be if he now stood in the way of those whom had
done so much for him.
"Mia culpa, mia culpa, mia maxima culpa". Indeed this too was his
fault, and Aurora had warned him of this, which only made his failure to
prevent it hurt more. With that thought he fell fast into a fitfull but
restful sleep. Not to be awakened until the song of the morning lark upon
his window sill signaled the start of a new day, and a new beginning. It
took but a day or two more and Aluric was back in the scriptorium. The
duties of the guild scribe where certain to rest upon his shoulders but a
short time more. Even now the proxied decrees bearing his signet and The
Guild Masters own seal, where being dispatched with the hearalds to spread
the news amoung the guild brothers far and wide.
Once the nominations and elections had been completed, the new
magister for the Knights of the Eternal flame would be free to pick their own
choice for scribe. So long as he wore the mantel thou, the service was his
to uphold as proper. Starbeard and Fair Star it seemed had chosen to move
on to other endevors, yeilding thier posts as guild master and assitant guild
master. God only knew who would fill thoes corronets. Mayhaps the new
leadership would see fit to let him continue on for a third term, He was
stil unsure if that was even what he wanted. Chivalry had decreed his
actions of late, and at the moment the task of scribe held no glamor for
Aluric. But the knock upon his office door brought renewed hope for the
future.
"Begging the masters pardon but I have a messanger page at the outer
door. Shall I admit him you worship?" "Yes, Yes, by all means admit the
lad" Aluric had just finished clearing his desk top when the hearld
announced the page. "Presenting, Soulpsyche, page of the lady Mishikal.
"Yes, very well, you may leave us. If you would be so kind." Pouring a cup
of mulled wine (the hour was yet too early for anything more robust).
"Please, why have you come". Nervously the page held out his sachel, "I
bring missive from my archknight." "Sit lad, have some repast if you have
broken your morning fast. (taking the parchment from the lad's out streached
hand), sit, sit, I had a feeling in my bones something was a brewing"
Reading the missive Aluric near jumped for joy at the words penned therin,
startling the page, for which Aluric did appologize. "Well now so its to be
a doubble wedding is it, Suzie Muze and Rathar with MIshikal and Thornwood,
some days it just dont get no better than this." "Finish at your leasure,
then oof with you, and give my heartfelt congratulations, oh and tell your
lady archknight, it will be my honour to preside at the cermony". Then out
the door and down to his private libary room he went, from down the hall,
in the distance came the words: "Theres a good lad, close the light and the
door on your way out! would you? I must go and check my tomes.........."
Aluric silently nursed his self worth a bit more, "thou my heart weeps from
within for my misdeeds and losses", he thought to himself, "I am permited
this small joy none the less" "Now just where did I put that spell book".The
Hunt for the Jedi Catacombs
(submitted by: UDL Charon)
The following is taken from the UDL/Jedi Praxium skirmishes:
Once again, Bayomon found himself before Shurg in the war tent. G0thmenes,
Os1r1s and Ldy Spawn huddled around the table of maps and scrolls reading the
latest spy reports and planning various attacks against the walls of the
Jedi's keep. Shurg took Bay aside and spoke to him.
"Brother, you continue to be a scourge to the Jedi. You serve Myrkul well,
but there is still much to be done. Taxia was a vital part of the grain
supply for the Jedi, and it's loss has caused some disruption for them. They
still, however, are managing to get supplies through to the keep. Our ghost
and banshee spies have been unable to learn anything of the way they are
transporting the various food goods into the keep, so now I am assigning you
this task. I want the Jedi to starve inside there walls and the husks of
there bodies to blow away in the wind by the time we are done with them."
"Shurg, I shall serve Myrkul and the Undead Lords with all that is dead
inside my soul."
"I know you shall brother." With that Shurg turned from Bay and rejoined
the three Warlords at the table, studying the keep's various weaknesses. As
Bay was about to exit Shurg called him one more time. The Arch-Lich's voice
chilled Bayomon as he spoke.
"Remember Bay...Myrkul does not reward failure."
"That is always in the forefront of my mind Shurg, always."
With that Bay walked out to find his tent...and set about his new task.
***
A ghoul walked into Bay's tent.
"Lord...I bring word from the ghost spy you sent to Tygras."
Bay had been meditating, and was annoyed by this interruption. He stood
and approached the ghoul underling, suddenly letting his hand fly. The
backhand caught the ghoul offguard and he fell to the ground cowering.
"I believe I instructed you to remove that Kef insignia from your armband."
"Yes Lord, I have been dead but days and am still adjusting to this
life...forgive me my mistake."
Bay grabbed him by his chest and lifted him from the ground.
"Forgiveness is not something normally granted in the UDL. Remove that
patch and do not let me see it in your possession again. That life is dead
to you now...you belong to Myrkul and the Undead Lords. Any other errors,
and I shall have to ask my sister Dspair to speak with you."
At the mention of Dspair's name, the ghouls eyes grew wide with fright.
"Now leave me, and do not return till I send for you."
The ghoul scrambled away on hands and knees after Bay dropped him, only
standing to run after he was out of the tent.
Bay picked up the scroll and read the message his best ghost spy, Esh, had
scrawled on the parchment.
"Lord - Major shipment to the Jedi Praxium's keep is in the works. Word has
it that Jp Mujawa will arrive within three days and act as escort. From my
understanding, no shipment leaves without a Jedi present. They may be
shielding the shipments, or have a way of warding detection, or perhaps
something totally different. It is unclear. However, this is the first time
I have turned up a guaranteed date of shipment. If you can arrive here ere
the shipment leaves, you may be able to discern the Jedi's ways of protecting
their goods. -Esh"
Bay summoned a ghoul messenger, who looked as frightened as the one he had
just dispatched. Apparently word had traveled quickly of his ire today.
"Send word to Shurg. Let him know I will be leaving with my war party
attempting to complete what he asked. Then get to my garrison. Tell them I
want them mounted and ready to ride within an hour, I want to be gone from
this area ere night falls."
As the ghoul left Bay turned to his pack and readied his own items and
scrolls for war. He would have need of them soon.
***
The ghoul underling's voice was tired and worn as he rode up to make his
report to Bayomon.
"My lord, we have lost them again. The Caravan's tracks continued for a
ways, however I could tell the tracks were false using the tricks you showed
me. They have changed directions again and disappeared."
Bay cursed under his breath. Mujawa was playing this game well. Bay had
caught up with Mujawa's caravan just outside of Tygras, and immediately Bay
could see what he was in for. The Jedi had a very powerful invisibility
spell they used to screen themselves from prying eyes, but it was a weakness
as well. The power flowing from Mujawa was such that he could not sustain
for too long, and also the fatigue the spell must generate would be fierce.
Bay suspected normally more than one Jedi would accompany a shipment, however
with the siege at the keep dragging on longer and longer, Bay doubted
Warderick could spare many Jedimasters. Thus...Mujawa was alone. The
caravan traveled for most of night, and slept during the day.
Bay had devised a spell that could cut through the invisibility that the
Jedi surrounded the caravan with, however it too was a difficult spell and
could only be sustained in short bursts. Thus began the game. Bay would
locate the caravan and then set a scout to follow them. Mujawa however was
not stupid, and was constantly adjust his path. Everytime the ghouls lost
the trail, Bay would have to locate them again.
This latest change of direction however disturbed Bayomon. They were
coming very near the Jedi's keep now, it was maybe a days ride away...why
would he change direction now? It made no sense. Bay mounted his nightmare
and prepared to locate this tiresome Jedi again, when it struck him. The
Catacombs. He had heard talk of the catacombs below the Jedi's keep, however
he assumed they were wine cellars and such. But what if they were much more
than that? What if these catacombs ran for miles? What if they had
entrances miles and miles from the keep? What if....what if they were near an
entrance now?! And Bay could lose them at any moment!
"Mount up!!" Bay shouted at his forces. He rode amongst his detachment
screaming and yelling at them to be ready, and within minutes they were. Bay
spurred his undead forth, his own Nightmare leading the way. As they rode he
called two scouts to his side.
"Listen carefully! Their caravan will have scouts! Locate the scouts!"
He spoke a few words and gave the vision spell he had crafted to both.
"Locate them at all costs! Look for anything unusual they do! And for
Myrkul's sake, don't let them see you. If they do...you'll wish you were
assigned to Despair's attachment! Or to Shurg himself!!" They nodded and
rode off.
"Mujawa...I will make you suffer for being such a pain." Bay swore to
himself.
***
Bay's detachment remained hidden for now. The caravan was no longer
hidden, as he could sense Mujawa had extended his powers to their limit.
Mujawa had driven his forces, as well as his own powers, hard the past few
days. He must have had a sense of pursuit, for he had moved long and hard
the past few days. What he did *not* know, was that Bay had received the
breakthrough he had needed yesterday. His scouts had been following the
caravan's advance scouts, when they walked into a flowing river and
disappeared. They come out minutes later, and were not even wet. When they
made their report to Bay, he spurred his forces on fast and furious. Being
undead his forces did not have the low limitations as far as sleep and rest.
They could be driven much harder.
They had reached the entrance to the Catacombs a half a day ahead of
Mujawa, and would be well rested when it came time to waylay the shipment.
Bay took the time to ride into the water and down into the catacombs. It was
a very strange enchantment that Bay passed through. The ground sloped down
and from the inside he could look up and see the underside of the river
flowing over as if it was riding a pane of glass. Bay's nightmare snorted
flames as they rode along the path. The magics of this place were extremely
powerful. The further in he rode...the more he felt disoriented and uneasy.
he could tell however that it was not a Jedi enchantment against evil,
however. It must be a natural phenomenon of this place, centered under their
Keep, no doubt. Probably the very reason they built it where it was.
"The Jedis must have to concentrate very very hard to navigate these
tunnels, and even then they must lose a recruit or two to it's depths." Bay
turned his steed around and began to ride back. He was surprised at how
difficult it was to find the entrance even just as little distance away that
he had rode. When he first learned of this place he thought it would be an
entrance into the keep that the UDL could use to their advantage, but now he
knew better. The jedi had centuries to learn to work with the powerful
Magics of the Catacombs, and no doubt it was still difficult for them. These
tunnels did not even need guards, such was the nature of this underworld.
But now that the UDL knew of its existence, they could begin to shut its
doors. Supplies would soon be kept from inside the Keep, and they would have
to fall on their food stores.
Bay rejoined his troops, and dispatched a messenger to Shurg. As he handed
the scroll explaining the situation to the ghoul messenger he gave his
instructions, and concluded with "The Arch-Lich must have these words at all
cost. If it takes your dying breath, see that this reaches his hand."
***
Mujawas Caravan was nearing the river, and Bay's troops were growing
impatient. He held them back though, as he would only strike at the moment
he felt that would be best. Finally, that moment came.
"Fear and death mortals! The dread hand of Myrkul rides upon you now!"
With those words the ghouls and banshees descended from the hills and onto
the caravan. As the battle raged, Bay set about locating JP Mujawa, as he
was the most important to deal with.
"Bayomon...you undead dog." Mujawa said as the two came to meet. "I
should have know it was you." Spells of protection surrounded him as Bay
dismounted to meet hi face to face.
"I have come to bring death upon your house Mujawa. You will sleep with
Myrkul this night."
With that the two engaged in battle, magic against magic in the middle of a
raging battle.
***
As Bayomon turned the body of the dead Jedi over, he spit. "May your soul
know no rest, and your body become food for worms." He turned to surmise his
losses. His detachment had been devastated, nearly half of his men lost.
However all of the Jedi's forces lay dead. The bodies of young men and
warriors littered the ground, and Bay breathed deep the smell of death and
decay and felt invigorated. This shipment would be burned, and the pendulum
would swing further to the side of the UDL. Bayomon gathered his forces and
headed back for the warcamp. These entrances would have to be ferried out,
and he hoped that Shurg would assign him the duties of searching all of them
out. Soon the keep would be isolated. Then the Undead Lords would have the
Praxium at their mercy. Of course, The UDL have no mercy, and so the Praxium
would be in deep trouble.
Forthcoming
(submitted by: Dirk Dirty)
The night sky was not filled with twilight. It was engulfed in huge odd
shaped clouds that blockaded the horizon. Nothing got through and nothing
came out. There was a limited view in the sky. No stars or moons would be
seen tonight. The black sky that looked like a soft blanket of the darkest
and richest velvet was nowhere in sight. Gray clouds that tinted the night
are expected to be seen. However, they seemed to have disappeared. In its
stead were clouds that made people turn their heads in disgust. Hovering
above the land was what appeared to be a floating island. Murky brown
replaced the normal gray. The mages who studied the land and space were
baffled. For once in their lives they were speechless. A phenomenon some
said.
As people observed the unusual activity memories that were buried deep within
their bellies swelled up to their lips. Old fairy tales mothers told to
little children were remembered. It appeared this a place of two worlds. The
world everyone knew and the world they fantasized about. Grins spread across
faces as they pieced together the old tales of cities in the sky. Great
empires that floated and travelled thousands of leagues. Many conquering
regions along the way claiming the stolen treasures theirs.
Quickly taverns filled up. Bards were awaken to tell tales. They dreamed of
times like this when they could tell their unusual and captivating stories.
Old poems were to be sung and great dance was to follow. Tables were taken
fast and barmaids were overwhelmed with customers. Laughter and cold stony
stares of old fueds were taking place. Gallon upon gallon of ale, wine, and
whisky was passed out. Before long the social party was in full swing.
Warriors, priests, and farmers flooded the room. All shared different
ethical, moral, and cultural beliefs but here they united as one. They were
the patrons.
The night progressed with events. Two barbarians had a drinking contest that
allowed bets to be wagered. The result of the match was a haphazard room with
foggy headed people. Excitement could be smelled in the air. Sweet alcohol
was now running thick through veins of blood. Bold tales were exchanged with
pats on the back and loud, Hars! The mood was set and became uneasy. Soon icy
stares resulted in balled fist with a friend telling them it was not worth
it.
Poets and bards saw this and quieted the room. Spooky and unreal stories
unraveled. Silence was the response to the story tellers. A couple bards fell
off the stage with a crashing thud. Barmaids tried to cover their laughter
thinking one too many beers. Jesters took the stage performing tricks while
narrating with bad jokes that anyone would laugh at in their current drunken
state.
It was soon well after midnight. The tavern had thinned out over the course
of the evening. Farmers had to harvest the next day. House wives were nervous
and husbands did not want to face their wrath of another hour late. Priests
had to begin their chores and prayers. Mercenaries moped to bed, another day
without hire. Without coin. A celebration worthy of reprise. All because of
the brown clouds that slowly floated lower as if they were gaining weight.
The tavernkeep slept well that night knowing she could keep the business
going for another couple months.
This account of festivities took place in the Happy Halfling Inn located in a
town besieged by trouble. Tonight is was forgotten and smiles replaced
frowns. Grumbles were replaced with uncontrollable laughter.
During this time two men walked through the dreaded Neverwinter Woods. The
taller of the two had broad shoulders and dense arms. He was cloaked from all
surroundings but his brothers eye. His younger brother had come to
Neverwinter from Silverymoon many months before. Their bond was reunited and
the youth gaped at his brothers current power. His brother however was only
slightly smaller in build but still inches shorter. His hooded cloak cast a
dark shadow across his face making him impossible to identify. His brothers
face was hidden with his enchanted cloak. He said he only wanted to hide the
scar down his left cheek. In his hand he clamped his dirk with such grip his
knuckles went white.
As they wandered through the woods they talked about many things. Recent
events mostly. Current riches that accumulated daily. New friends they met.
Soon the topic switched to the future. In muffled and calm voices dreams were
spoken. Dreams that everyday looked more and more like reality. Soon their
walking took them to a clearing. In the middle was a pile of trees, rocks,
and other materials. Turning around and glancing in the direction the had
come from they checked to make sure no one had followed them. Muttering two
words simultaneuosly they suddenly appeared in the midst of what others would
call garbage. They scanned over the materials and invisioned something. Home.
A place of pilgrimage where they were outcasts.
Wicked grins came to their lips as multiple humanoid figures slowly
materialized from the shadows. Some would think they came out of the ground
itself. The younger brother looked to the sky and then hit his brother on the
arm. He turned and saw his brother motioning upward. He grinned and then
nodded without seeing the clouds. All within the clearing smirked. Their
expressions were read; greed, power, and turmoil. Smirks transformed into
wide open mouths emitting a powerful sound. Vicious laughter could be heard.
It echoed, booming through the trees!
With a snap of the finger the clouds dissapated. The warning diminished
leaving people to wonder. Next time the clouds returned, they would be much
closer. Much more serious. What was to happen with the city in the sky.
Would they return. The townsfolk hoped so and would have a huge bash for the
next. Plans were already underway.
The brothers in the woods had plans too.

A parchment penned amid moonglow and pipe music
Words carefully monitored by a graceful silvery-hearted feminine soul
Delivered to the Bunkhouse by a solitary spritely courier
Attached to a weatherbeaten, faintly familiar longsword:

My brothers and sisters,
A fortnight since this writing, I witnessed Cerdith's drowning. Death took
her in the marsh. It was an illusion, of course, simply a cruel illusion:
yet, too, it was a message.
[harsh scratchings rend the script unreadable]
This wispy image of our sister's death called to me as a herald, and I
departed at once to rejoin you all and lend my weathered blade in quelling
whatever dilemma she faces.
Many things have happened since I left the marsh, many things have happened
since Cerdith died, many things have...
[here the ink pools, as if the writer grew grew distracted, or fell
asleep in mid-thought]
...but she is not Meilikki, as I first believed. This spirit who found me.
She carries a piece of Meilikki in her spirit, however; carries pieces of Our
Lady in her silvery heart. But I jump ahead of myself; the mind blurs. [the
penmanship abruptly changes to a graceful, thin script in a foreign hand]
Someone left the universe open too long and the memory has gone flat.
[the script tails into an illustrated stream of interconnected leaves]
We met amid the roots of the Ardeepforest. She lives in the barrel of an oak,
this woman, this soul. I peered into her eyes: worlds shifted, time
stuttered, gods shuddered and cowed their heads. This is grace personified.
This is grace enchanted.
She calls, I must leave off this writing; with each night my soul grows
lighter, and my heavy, broken heart feels less of a burden. In my absence, I
send you my blade, which I no longer need, and I hope that it will lend you
aid in your defense of... your defense of... your...

The voice was insistent, tugging on her mind, pulling at her
concentration.... it was irritating, annoying. How dare it interfere with
the song! Her face creased with anger as she sought to shove aside that
disturbing and somehow strangely familiar voice. Every time she almost
grasped the words and understood the lyrics of the song, this voice intruded.
Stubbornly, she fought to regain the place she had in the music ignoring once
more the distraction.
Feeling the singer's voices caress her mind once more, she relaxed into the
song's safety and embrace. Tenatively, having wanted to do so from the very
beginning, she began to hum softly, following first one sprialing theme then
another. Entranced and now a part of the song itself she felt that nagging
voice slide away once more defeated again as Cerdith gave herself over to the
songs of the wind.Songs of the Wind - Part 11

Ender sat on the bank of the Neverwinter river. His trusty sea gull was
perched nearby, keeping a keen eye out on their camp for threatening
intruders. From Ender's vantage point he could see his beaver friend's dam
and he could easily scan the surrounding area for other creatures. Though
this area was pretty quiet, Ender knew that the other areas of the woods were
bustling with activity. There were rumors that an evil guild was charging
tolls to travellers and killing those who refused to pay. Ender wanted to do
something about this, but he dared not leave the banks of the river.
It had been weeks since he held his Parliament of Fishes. He had hoped to
hear some news about his sister, Cerdith, by now. He took some comfort in
knowing that other Pathfinders were in search of her as well. As his
thoughts wandered and he day-dreamed about happier times, a strange thing
happened out on the water. A good sized bass was jumping out of the water
repeatedly and making a large splash. He was too self-consumed to notice at
first, but eventually the fish caught his attention.
He ran into the water up to his knees and bent over to get a better look at
the fish. It was clear that the fish was very old, certainly older than
Ender. In fact, Ender believed this fish was old enough to have seen the
passing of several generations of humans. The fish seemed to be worried, and
with good reason as Ender soon found out.
It seemed that a woman Pathfinder fitting Cerdith's description had been seen
travelling in the mountains. Fish don't have the same awareness of time as
humans do in terms of passing days, so Ender had to make a rough estimate of
when Cerdith was last seen based on how often he thought this fish would need
to feed. Unfortunately, she was probably last seen by any fish around a
month or so back. Ender also found out the reason this old fish was so
concerned. Cerdith was headed roughly in the direction of an area where no
fish go. In fact, this fish seemed to think that no animals at all would go
anywhere near where Cerdith was headed. He also said that no humans had
passed by there in what was certainly a very long time - Ender took it to
mean several human lifetimes.
The worst part was that Ender really had no clue as to how to find her. The
directions the fish gave before leaving were very sketchy to Ender. The fish
didn't use landmarks, he used watermarks - things you would only see from a
fish's perspective underwater. He had a rough idea though and he figured he
could make excellent time and at least get to where Cerdith last filled her
canteen by using his raft. It may take a while of searching, but he was sure
he could do it. He wanted to ask the fish to lead him to her, but before he
could the fish had swam off. Apparantly the old fin wasn't too comfortable
hanging around with Ender's gull eyeing him from above.
Ender quickly packed up camp and did his best to hide his tracks. He left a
little marker for his fellow Pathfinder's to see that would let them know
which way he headed out. When he turned to uncover his raft from the
camoflauge he had hidden it with, his gull began to cry out frantically.
"What? Calm down!" When Ender turned around he was faced with a truly
awesome sight. There before his very eyes stood a unicorn! It was the most
beautiful creature Ender had ever seen. Her muscles rippled beneath her pure
white coat as she danced playfully near Ender's pack. Ender could do nothing
more than stare in awe. Never had a unicorn approached him so closely. In
fact, he had never done more than catch a brief glimpse of one from hundreds
of yards before this.
While Ender stood motionless, the unicorn stopped its prancing and stared
into his eyes. He went to speak, but the unicorn winked at him and before he
could get anything out of his mouth she scooped up his pack with her horn and
tossed it onto her back. With a swift turn of her head she galloped off into
the woods.
"Hey," Ender said weakly. "That's my stuff."
SQUAAAAWK!
"Why didn't you tell me there was a unicorn nearby?"
Squawk.
"Well of course they're not threatening!!!! But when have you ever seen one
around here?"
SQUAWK SQUAWK.
"What do you mean, it's not your fault?" The gull cocked its head to the
side and gave Ender a sidelong view. "Okay, okay... I know it's not your
fault... obviously it's some sort of sign. We'll have to try to follow her."
Ender looked for the tracks and found them easily. As he followed her trail,
the tracks disapeared behind him. It wasn't long before Ender realized the
tracks were leading him on the long journey back to the bunkhouse.
"I guess the Lady doesn't want me searching for Cerdith alone."

Urgency tugged at Thorn Hawk as darkness claimed the forest. He was three
days late in meeting an old friend. He was to have met him at the shrine of
Mielikki along the Eastern edge of the forest three days ago, but a burnt out
farm and the following pursuit had delayed him. Less than ten miles from his
goal, he stopped for the evening. It galled him to delay one more day, but
the ranger knew he could not run further this day.
A small fire blazed merrily while Thorn Hawk sat quietly listening to the
woods. He had grown to love the woods as much if not more than the desert in
which he was raised. A slight shadow detached itself from the surrounding
gloom and approached the fire.
"You're late," whispered an elf, pulling back the hood of his cloak.
"I wondered when thee would enter my camp."
"Ha . . . You didn't sense me. Admit it, Hawk," retorted the figure.
"I shall do no such thing, Delynn. I know I am late in meeting thee, but I
was sidetracked."
"So, That was you causing the fireworks?" motioning to the West.
"Nay, twas not I, but the band I pursued. They ran into a denizen of these
fair woods and died."
"You have grown since last I saw you Hawk."
"It has been a few years Delynn, and yes, I have seen much."
Noting the wisdom in Hawk's eye, "I remember when I first met you. You
wandered into the temple of Tymora with a tale of an old man healing a deer.
Impressed that you were so taken by that act, I listened to your tale of
wanting to learn magic. It was strange seeing a human, sworn in hand,
wanting to learn the clerical arts."
"I still have the desire to learn to heal, but I must make do with other
means. I understand now what thee tried to tell me so long ago about my
spirit."
"I am glad you finally understand. You are a warrior and not a cleric. It
was never in your nature to be one, but I see my training you in the arts of
magic did not go to waste."
Taking a rabbit off the fire, "I have gotten better over the years. Dost
thee want to share my dinner?"
"Yes, if you have enough," replied Delynn, taking a piece. "I taught you all
that I knew of magic, but I was never a very good mage."
"That is not true Delynn. Thee knows much of the magic arts, just not how to
employ them in combat. That was why Kalean took over teaching me the arts
after I left thee."
"You speak fondly of her, Hawk."
"Aye, my friend. I grew to love her as we traveled the northern realms
together. We traveled to most of the cities along the sword coast trading
for that was her livelihood. Along the way, she taught me much about using
magic."
Yawning, "It is getting late, Delynn. Mayhaps, we can continue in the
morning," commented Thorn Hawk as he rolled out his blanket. "You are right
Hawk. I got caught up in seeing an old friend." Taking his own blankets,
Delynn moved to the far side of the fire and promptly fell asleep.
The morning found the two friends moving toward the shrine of Mielikki. A
doe stood with her fawn eating grass when she suddenly raised her head at the
approaching pair. Moments later, she dashed off into the underbrush, fawn in
tow.
"Thee makes a lot of noise for an elf, Delynn," remarked Thorn Hawk, shaking
his head.
"I never said I was an elf, Hawk. My mother was, but my father was a human."
"Oh, I just assumed thee was an elf by thy dress and manners."
"I was raised as an elf in a village in the High Forest to the East, but back
to our conversation. You were telling me how you arrived in Neverwinter."
"There is not much to tell thee. I heard news that this Lord Nasher needed
adventurers. Since I was looking for a fight or something worth fighting
for, I packed my bag and started the long trek north from Baldur's Gate. It
was a hard road to travel for the snows had set in making the road almost
impassable north of Waterdeep. I arrived just after the winter solstice. I
still remember my first sight of Neverwinter. The place was a bee hive of
armed men and women, but this Nasher seemed an honorable sort, so I stayed."
A small clearing opened as the pair moved down the trail. Morning mist still
clung to the tops of a few trees, while the sun bathed the center with its
glow. A statue of a whisp of a girl stood within the sunlight looking down
at a doe laying by her feet. In the shade of a nearby tree, a small shrine
stood behind the statue. Delynn walked into clearing unaware that his
companion had stopped. "I am glad you have found a. . . . " glancing back at
Thorn Hawk. "Are you coming?"
"Sorry, this place always takes my breath away," replied Thorn hawk in a
whisper as he caught up to his friend.
Smiling, "I said, I am glad you have found a new home."
"As am I."
Taking a seat on a bench in the shrine, Delynn asked, "Why did you ask to see
me Hawk? Your message seemed very urgent."
Pacing, "My sister, Cerdith had disappeared and as a priest of Mielikki, I
was hoping you could help me find her."
"I didn't know you had a sister, Hawk."
Smiling, "She is not my real sister, Delynn. She is a pathfinder as am I."
"So, you joined with the brotherhood of pathfinders?"
"Yes. Shortly after arriving in Neverwinter, I met a man by the name of Lake
Mist. It was he who introduced me to the brotherhood. I pledged with them
to follow the lady's path."
Stopping to look at Delynn with pleading eyes, "Can you help me find Cerdith,
Delynn?"
"I cannot help you very much Hawk for the lady will not interfere. I can
tell you that she is being held captive somewhere where old magic rules and
few humans have traveled in many moons."
"Is that all thee knows?"
"No. You will need the help of your fellows for this. As we talk, they
travel to Luskan believing she lies somewhere in the mountains to the
Northeast of that port city."
"Then, I must go there as well," responded Thorn Hawk with a grim note to his
voice.
"We all must follow our own paths, Hawk. Just travel safely for you do not
know what it is you fight."
With anger in his voice, "you do know more. Thee had better tell me, Delynn,
for I have a need to know all there is of my enemy."
Waving his hands, "calm down, Hawk. All I can tell you is to be fearful of
the wind and the song it sings. And Hawk, one more thing. Whatever happened
to Kalean? You did not say last night."
Staring at the statue, Thorn Hawk replied, "she died, Delynn. She died in my
arms," with a sadness in his voice that caused the half elf to turn away.
Delynn stood within the shadows of the temple watching as his one time pupil
and friend disappeared running toward Luskan and danger. He walked toward
the small statue and knelt. "Lady, please do all you can to help them in
their fight, since I feel they will need your full favor to survive what
faces them and free their sister." After a few moments of silent meditation,
the priest of Mielikki rose and headed back toward the High Forest, and his
home.

The rising moon found Thorn Hawk many leagues to the West of Mielikki's
shrine. He had traveled mostly at a run for the last week without taking
much rest, and the toll was taking effect. A gaunt, fatigued figure sat
before a small fire staring in the flames, while wolves howled at the full
moon in the clear night sky. He picked at a roasted rabbit, killed sometime
during the day, and thought of his missing sister.
He had traveled several months without a trace of Cerdith, but much lore
was learned about her. In these travels, Thorn Hawk had met many people who,
having not seen Cerdith in a long time, proved useless in his search, but had
given him a great understanding of the woman he tracked. A wisp of a woman
with an iron will to match that of any dwarf, a fiery temper that many trolls
have felt, the playful nature of an innocent child, and the loveliness of the
goddess he revered. Thorn Hawk had never met Cerdith, but he loved her. He
had heard many stories of her adventures from other pathfinders, which
brought a slight smile to his lips. Finishing his rabbit, he settled down to
rest, his dreams plagued by thoughts of Cerdith, held captive and unaware of
the thoughts of those who loved her.
Veering toward the Northwest, Thorn Hawk had traveled steadily closer to
a large mountain in the northern reaches of the woods. He had opted for this
route to save some time in reaching Luskan. Stopping to drink from a nearby
brook, Thorn Hawk heard the faint echo of music or was it the wind.
Something, a thought tugged at his mind. Recalling his conversation with
Delynn, . . . "calm down, Hawk. All I can tell you is to be fearful of the
wind and the song it sings." Laughing, Thorn Hawk quickly searched the area.
Nothing was revealed to his careful search, but the mountain loomed in the
background, its peak invisible behind a concealing layer of white clouds. It
felt right, but he needed help for he could not attempt the climb without
assistance.
Thorn Hawk had explored the rest of the day looking for something to
help him in his plan. He finally found the object of his search high in the
branches of a nearby spruce tree. Whispering a small prayer to Mielikki, 'my
lady, I need thy help in this endeavor for I can neither do it alone nor will
I leave this place to carry a message back to my brethren. If thee wishes my
success, please grant me this one favor.'
Taking a small mouse from within his cloak, Thorn Hawk, looking up into
the eyes of a gray hawk, continued with his plan hoping the lady smiled on
him and the bird understood his words. "Well met lord of the skies. I have
need of thine aid if thee is willing to give it. I have nothing to offer
thee except a hunt for this small meal and my friendship. A dear friend of
mine is held captive up in the reaches of this nearby mountain and I fear for
her safety. I need to get a message to my fellows, but I wish not to leave
this place unguarded. It is in the task of taking a message to my brothers
that I beseech thee." Releasing the mouse, Thorn Hawk watched as the hawk,
taking flight, dove upon the hapless mouse. Giving a fierce cry, the hawk
soared into the air before returning to land on the outstretched arm of Thorn
Hawk.
"I am glad thee hast agreed to help, my friend."
Thorn Hawk watched as the hawk, soaring into the distance, carried his
message to Ender Bay and others. Finding a place to wait for his friends,
the vigilant ranger's thoughts drifted on the wind.

The gray hawk circled over a sheltered camp while a reddish glow spread
from the setting sun to cover the land. Below, five humans sat around a
small fire unaware of the messenger above. The hawk, blessed with
intelligence above that of it's kind, could not fathom what had brought it
here. The human had seemed sincere in his desire for help and the mouse had
been a delightful treat, but there was more. Unable to grasp the reason for
its help, the hawk dove from the sky.
Landing silently in the branches of a nearby tree, the hawk watched the
humans for some sign signaling the end of its search. "Zeb, stop watching
for danger and come over here and have some of this griffon stew you're so
fond of," said a man dressed as a buccaneer.
Shrugging, "maybe your right Ender. There does not seem to be any danger
around this night," replied Zeb Canon dressed in the cloth of a cleric of
Mielikki. A sign the hawk understood.
While on the other side of camp, another conversation was taking place.
"Trout you're as crazy as Ender's gull," remarked a tall ranger dressed in
brown leathers holding a silver tankard up to his lips.
Giggling, "no Lake, I think Troutrasta is correct. Those banshees come
out whenever he goes to Vilnask. Maybe, they like the young man," replied a
beautiful woman dressed in a lavender skirt and green blouse as she glanced
at Troutrasta.
"Maybe you are right, Primrose," answered Lake Mist, smiling.
"Hey Ender, pass over some of that stew," ventured Troutrasta holding out
a bowl.
With a fierce cry, the hawk broke the peaceful gathering causing the
gull to emit a squawk and take flight. Troutrasta started to laugh, while
Ender Bay turned from the hawk to his gull a worried look on his face when he
noticed the hawk regarding the fleeing gull. Taking wing, the hawk dropped
down to land on a fallen log near where Ender Bay stood. Another shrill cry
brought everyone's attention to the hawk as he worked at the message tied to
its leg.
"Look, it has a note attached to its leg," remarked Troutrasta.
"Well, you go get it then," replied Lake Mist, eyeing the hawk.
"It's just a bird, but it does look hungry," commented Ender Bay
remembering the look the hawk gave his gull.
"Oh Mielikki," stated Zeb Canon, shaking his head, as he reached for the
note which the hawk had worked loose. Unrolling the fine parchment, he began
to read.
Dear Ender Bay and brothers,
I have recently departed a shrine to our lady deep within the woods we
all love. It was there that I had learned information about our lost sister
Cerdith. I was told to find my brothers for I could not do this alone.
Making my way toward your location, I decided to venture toward the northern
mountains within the Neverwinter Woods. I felt this would save me time, but
I feel the lady might have guided me to this route. While passing near a
tall mountain, I thought I heard music, but I was not sure, it could have
been just the wind. It was then I remembered something the priest at the
shrine told me. He warned me to beware of the wind and the song it sings. I
gave it no mind at the time for it made no sense, but now as I stand watch
looking up on the slopes of this giant mountain, whose peak is lost in white
clouds, I feel this priest may have been right. I sense I have found the
place of our sister's imprisonment for this mountain fills me with evil
boding. I ask thee to come to this place so we can challenge this mountain
and its dangers together. My watch will remain vigilant until thine arrival.
Your brother,
Thorn Hawk.
P.S. Please release the hawk from my service for he has done me a
great service and I wish not to hinder him any further.

Humming softly with the song, following the melody and swaying in time with
the rhythm, she remained entranced. Wrapped tightly in her cloak, protected
by her lean-to from the climate she was virtually invisible to the casual
observer. Another might notice the structure she had built when first she
arrived here, or they might notice the many other hastily constructed
shelters which Cerdith had never noticed when she found the clearing in the
midst of the storm.
Glancing within those other shelters, someone who was not immediately
entrapped by the wind's song, would see the cold white glimmer of bone as
well. Wasting away slowly, unknowingly each who had come before had died
here. They had never noticed, never awakened from the magic of the Wind
which fiercely claimed its prey. Their bones lay scattered in piles here and
there, bits of cloth and metal mixed within.
The old ones, who had lived here for so long before the hasty humans came had
known of this place, had respected its power and the dreadful sweetness of
its trap. They had posted warnings and symbols that any who wandered near
would avoid the clearing and its snare. But, the warnings had fallen away,
disappeared as time and the natural way of things took their toll. The Wind
grew stronger with every soul it claimed, its song could be heard further and
further from the clearing and already with the Pathfinder entrapped within
the whisps of its power, the song could be heard at the base of the mountain.
Her life claimed and it would be heard in the small villages in the
foothills... those lives claimed and it would be heard yet further.....
Wasting away, face gaunt, Cerdith rocked slowly in time with the music. Her
eyes, if she raised them from the forest floor were as brightly green as
ever, yet unseeing. Her body had become merely a frame and soon even
movement would be beyond her abilities. The music was glorious....Songs of

Ender regarded the hawk curiously. It seemed that it was hungry.
"Thankyou for your services. Thorn Hawk has released you from your duties.
Would you like some griffon stew before you leave?"
The hawk screeched loudly at Ender, as if insulted, before flying off in a
most indignant manner.
"Did you forget what the main ingredient of griffon stew is? I doubt many
hawks relish that dish." Lake Mist had a bemused look while he chided Ender
somewhat. The seriousness of the moment was broken momentarily by a few
chuckles around the camp.
Seeing the coast was clear, Ender's gull flew down and perched nearby and let
out a subdued squawk.
"Okay people, play time is over. It's time to get some rest. Tomorrow at
first light we're packing camp and heading out to catch up with Thorn Hawk.
Since you're so eager to look out for the baddies, Zeb, you take the first
watch. After that it's Trout, Rose, and then Lake. I'll take the last watch
and make sure you're all up bright and early."
Zeb regarded Ender intuitively. It was Ender's job to take command of the
group... he had been Recon Scout since before either Zeb or Lake had been
elected into the combined guild leadership. However, it was very rare for
Ender to take such a strong leadership role. He generally seemed more at
ease on land when someone else lead the group. He was capable of leading
groups anywhere, but he obviously preferred to leave the land expeditions in
someone else's hands.
When everyone else was retiring for the night, Zeb approached Ender in
private.
"You're worried about Cerdith, aren't you?"
"Yes," Ender replied, "and I'm worried about Thorn Hawk too. We've all
gotten the point from Mielikki one way or another... we're not to go after
Cerdith alone. We need to stick in groups. I am still hopeful that Cerdith
is alive, but I don't know how long that will last... and I'm pretty sure
that Thorn will be in trouble if he proceeds too far without us."
"Well, get some sleep, bro. We're going to all need plenty of rest."
With those words from Zeb, Ender went to bed. He slept restlessly until Lake
woke him up for his turn at watch. Ender said a quick thanks to Mielikki for
allowing them to make it through the night without incident.

I lay awake in my bed one night. Searching my mind for the reasons of my
sorrow. When out of the mysterious darkness a form appeared. I sat up and
peered in it's direction saying, "Welcome to the area of my rest." The being
stepped forward with a sneer. The moon shone red that eve as the form bent
and kissed my cheek as I sat not the least bit afraid. Nor was I amused as I
asked it, "and you are?" As if by answer the moon's light washed over the
room revealing the creature's strange appearance. Horrid and beautiful all
at once. This creature took my breath away!
His sneer vanished to be replaced by a knowing smile. "A demon by word of
man," his lengthened finger pointed towards the sky, "but an angel by word of
the gods." I breathed in it's unusual scent, knowing it spoke the truth.
"The question is my humble son, shall we listen to the gods or do we answer
to man? Each is dead without the other you know? Fear the gods only as much
as you fear yourself." My body sank back into the bed. I spoke my mind,
"You are wrong my dear guest, you know not what you say. Your jealousy of
them has no end. Their power tantalizes you, you who were damned from the
beginning!."
His reply seemed to shock me, "who here is truly damned. You or I?" He sat
himself down upon my sheets, whispering the knowledge he had to share. Dawn
approached, "I must go," he rose to approach my window. As his sculptured
feet perched on my window seal preparing to leave I found my voice to once
more speak "Why did you come here on this sorrowful night?"
Once again he smiled. "The answer to life is what you wished to know, the
answer to life is not to be told. But let it be known, that no man's legacy
ends here."The Kender Affair - Chapter One
(submitted by: Exegete)
Overall this affair is going off fairly well" thought Exegete of the Forge,
Knight of the Round Table. He, and a number of other Knights had been
attending an affair of state in the Palace of Lord Nasher, ruler of
Neverwinter and of the Realms. It was a decoration ceremony for The Lady
Nalika, in honor of her leading of the Knights of KORT in suppression of the
Draconian incursions into the Triboar area.. The Knights had stood in long
line, along with representatives of several of the other guilds in
Neverwinter. The presentations and commendations had gone on and on and the
sun became hotter and hotter (especially for those in the Formal Plate Armor
the Knights had recently adopted for "official" occasions. Obviously,
whoever had chosen the Silver and Black motif had never worn Plate Armor in
the sun before. It was handsome enough, but gods breath it was hot and
uncomfortable. It made the prospect of the coming reception and the cool
mead and ale that was sure to be a part of it all the more attractive. Exe
had always liked that part of these functions the best. Nasher had his
faults, but by gods, he could throw a mean party. Exe winced as a cramp ran
the length of his right calf. He had barely moved a muscle in the entire 2
1/2 hours of the presentation. Lady Nalika had threatened hold spells and
itching power for those who were not still enough; but she was always testy
about these things and Exe was fairly sure that she wouldn't follow through
on her threat, but just the same...
Exe concentrated on the "drill" for standing at attention for long lengths of
time. Knees slightly flexed, all muscles relaxed, eyes unfocused, but
straight forward. Gauntleted hands on the pommel of his unshipped but
sheathed Broadsword before him. Sword, tip resting on the ground, at right
angles to said ground, precisely 6 inches from the body, at no time
entertaining any angle, blah blah blah. Just kind of "hang yourself on a peg
there" Tuvor had told him during his days as his Squire..
Basic Training had been a trip he mused absently, his mind wandering
absently. Upperclassmen screaming at you, endless drills and ceremonies.
Classes and book learning, and gods, the interminable ridiculous "trivia"
they'd had to spout. "What is a cow Mr. Toad" Lessee, how did that answer
go? "Sir, she walks she talks, she's full of chalk. Sir the lactated fluid
extracted from the female of the bovine species is prolific to the nth degree
Sir!" Exe almost smiled. The discipline of the service he mused. he still
wasn't sure what the lactated fluid of the female of the Bovine species had
to do with whacking the heads off Kobolds and sending evil doers to meet
their dubious maker. But then, who was he to question the discipline of the
service and the requirements of the order?
The blaring of trumpets and the stirring martial fanfare of the honors band
near the presentation platform stirred him from his thoughts abruptly. The
ceremonies were coming to and. All that was left was to march smartly by the
reviewing stand and render honors to both Nasher and Nalika. Exe stepped
into line with the rest of his troop and cheerfully fulfilled this last part
of his "official" duties for this day. Each step brought the anticipated
Reception closer and closer. .
The Ale was every bit as cool and refreshing as Exe had thought it would be.
He finished his second mug quickly and, taking his third, moved over toward
the little alcove that was serving and the gathering place for the Knights.
The Knights, as a rule, preferred their own company, few having the courtly
graces necessary to mingle in a diplomatic session. That was generally left
to the likes of BlackCoral and Allsfaire, Nalika and Sir Corwin. These
things most often turned into pleasant sessions of bragging and talking among
the Knights, who loved free food & drink, well, pretty much above most
everything else. Nalika had met them at the beginning of the reception and
had entreated them to their best behavior. "This is a State Ballroom, not a
common barroom" she had sternly told them. Ganzelle and Tuvor nodded
solemnly. Ganselle readily agreed, looking mortified at the suggestion that
he might do something unseemly. Akumu and Exegete just smiled agreeably, the
others joining in. After all what could possibly happen at an affair of this
nature. No one wanted any unpleasantness at such an affair. That should
have been our first clue as what the evening would unfold.
Exegete had just returned from the bar with his 4th mug of Ale when he
spotted the Kender moving around the edges of the crowd in the main Ballroom.
No one else seemed to notice him, not at all unusual given the Kender skill
of remaining unnoticed until they desired to be. Actually, at first, Exegete
wasn't really all that sure he had seen the Kender at all, but a second look
convinced him that was indeed a real, live Kender, in the act of removing a
jeweled clasp from the gown of one of the ladies in the greeting line. "Oh
gods" he thought, that's Miranda, the Lady of one of the BDA Yuckety Yucks.
this should be interesting" The Kender was busily and successfully moving
down the line unsuspected when the thought stuck Exe that this had the
potential to cause so real trouble. Normally that wouldn't have bothered
him, as these things tend to be a little dry and a diversion would serve to
liven things up a bit. BUT, this was an affair in Nalika's honor and
anything that caused trouble at this particular affair was definitely taboo
tonight. Exe turned to head for the alcove and get some advice from Tuvor.
A Kender?" Tuvor asked incredulously? "Here? In Neverwinter? In Nasher's
Palace?" he went on unbelievingly. "How many of those things have you had?"
he asked indicating the mugs of Ale.
"Only four and it was a Kender I tell you" Exegete insisted defensively.
"He's 'acquiring' things in the greeting line and has lightened some folks
that won't react well!
"There haven't been Kender in Neverwinter for years" Ganzelle said, entering
the conversation. "You sure it was a Kender and not the Ale?" he asked with
a raised eyebrow. Exe's "talent" for imagination when under the influence
was well known. "Try and remember not to torch the place this time" he added
with a smile.
"I won't torch the place and there really was Death Knight at that Inn. I
can't help it if my aim was off a bit, besides I paid for the damage" Exe
said, a wounded tone in his voice. "Boy, one mistake and you branded for
life!" he added.
"Well, I wouldn't say one mistake, now" Tuvor interjected with a smile "The
was the oatmeal affair after all."
"Oh let's not get into that again" Exegete moaned. "Daggie still can't use
that cloak and he reminds me of it every chance he gets" he said, a rue smile
on his face. "You have to admit though, the cherries & whipped cream were a
nice touch?"
"Depends on your point of view I guess" Tuvor admitted. "At any rate, we
certainly don't want any kind of repeat tonight. This is great night for
KORT and a great night for Sister Nalika and I don't want anything to spoil
it for her. You heard what she said and I want to be on record as being in
complete agreement with. . .with. . .with. . . ."
Tuvor stared off past Exegetes right shoulder at the area near the food
buffet. Ganzelle followed his gaze and his mouth dropped open in surprise.
Exegete turned quickly to see the Kender, in the process of sliding one of
the golden food trays out form under some cold cuts and putting it under his
cloak. "See!" he hissed. "I told you so"
"Yeah, yeah" was Tuvor's only reply, intent as he was on watching the
Kender's work right under the nose of the steward. "Gods, he's a good one"
he muttered with grudging admiration.
"We've got to stop him, this could wreck the reception" Ganzelle whispered.
"No magic" he went on, it would only alert everyone that there was something
going on. "OK you guys, spread out"
The remarkable things was that they were able to catch the Kender at all.
Ganzelle approached from one side, Exegete from behind, and Tuvor from a
third side. Distracted by Exegete and Ganzelle, the Kender was delayed
enough to fail to escape Tuvor's grasp. The three Knights hurried him off
into a nearby cloakroom. Tuvor pushed him up against the back wall the three
Knights confronted the Kender.
They all began to speak at once:
"What're you doing here?" Tuvor Asked
"How'd you get inside the Palace?" Ganzelle asked
"What're you planning to do with silver platter?" Exegete asked
The Kender looked confused. "Please, One at a time" Tuvor asked raising a
hand "And be quiet, we don't want the whole reception in here!" he added
urgently. "Ooooohhh no you don't" he said grabbing the Kender who was trying
to take the opportunity to slip out of the cloak room.
"You're not going anywhere!" he said, pushing he back to the back wall. "Now
Stay put and tell us what in the name of Tyr you're doing in Neverwinter, and
at a formal reception no less!"
"Masterful Knights" the Kender began. "I was merely passing by and saw the
wonderful party your Lordships were having and just thought I'd lean in take
a peek, so to speak" he went on innocently. I had no idea I was trespassing.
You know, if you want to keep people out of places, you really should get
better locks, the lock on the pantry door must be defective or something it
came right off in my hand!". he said sweetly, producing the lock from a pouch
and showing it to the Knights.
"You took the lock off the door?" Ganzelle began in an amazed voice. "Tuv, I
know these locks and they're the best available in Neverwinter!"
Tuvor looked the small Kender over with a practiced eye. "Let's see what
else is in those pouches" he said quietly, but with authority.
"Surely kind master" the Kender replied, beginning to take his pouches and
empty them on the floor. "I have nothing to hide"
"Wait a second, let's see the tray you stole from the buffet table first"
Exegete said before the Kender was able to empty any of his pouches.
The Kender looked up in alarm. "Stole?!" he said in a shrill voice. "The
tray was empty and I was just looking at it. It has some very interesting
inscriptions on the back your know, just look here. . ." he said stating to
turn the tray over.
"Never mind that" Exegete said grabbing hold of the tray and starting to
wrest it from his hands. They grappled for a moment and then Exegete tore the
tray from the Kender's hand. Ganzelle and Tuvor leaned toward Exegete,
looking at the tray curiously. None of the three Knights saw the Kender's
hand stray to a pouch at his side and withdraw a bit of dust. He quickly
blew the dust into the air and, for the three Knights, the world went black
as night.
All three of the Knights dove for where the Kender stood and a minor ruckus
ensued. The darkness lifted a moment later to show Ganzelle manfully
subduing a ladies sewing mannequin while both Tuvor and Exegete struggled
with various cloaks that had somehow become entangled about their persons,
both falling to the floor and writhing about in an attempt to get free.
Tuvor was the first to get free and flipped over on his stomach to get up. He
found himself staring at a pair of armored boots. He heaved a sigh and
slowly followed the boot upward, eventually finding himself looking up at the
amused visage of Dagron, Elder of KORT.
"Ahem!" Dagron intoned in his deep voice. Both Exegete and Ganzelle ceased
their movement and looked at Dagron in apparent alarm and embarrassment.
With a sheepish look at each other, they both quickly got to their feet and
join Tuvor, who by now was standing looking anywhere but at Dagron. The
three cast a quick glance around the cloak room, seeing that the Kender was
gone. They exchanged glances, each understanding that there was the dickens
to pay if Dagron caught them with a tray taken from the buffet table. He'd
never believe that there was a Kender, thinking instead that this was part of
some elaborate practical joke. Tuvor gave Exe a "Why do I let you get me
into these things look" and turned his attention back to Dagron.
"I'm not sure I want to know what was going on here" Dag began. "You guys
were making enough noise to wake the undead!" he said in low voice, conscious
of the reception going on behind him.. "You know how important this is to
Nal" he went, "Try and behave yourselves and keep the noise down" he added
forcibly. He looked each Knight in the eye and receive a nod in response.
As he did, he noticed that Exegete, standing on the left end of the trio, was
holding something behind his back. "Whadda you got there Exe?" he asked.
"Me?" Exe replied, he hoped innocently.
"Yes, You!" Dag replied in a tired voice. "You - not the wall, you!" he
added, as if to make his point clear.
"Ah!" Exe said, uncomfortably. "Me. Ummm. . .behind my back. . .you want to
know what's behind my back?" he asked, clearly stalling for time. Dagron
scratched his forehead absently. "I'm gonna count to three. Now, I better
not get to three because if I get to three, I know three Knights who'll be
sorry and that my Momma ever taught me to count. Now. . .1. . .2. . ."
Exe pulled his hands pout from behind his back. "Nothing Dag, I don't have
anything in my hands, what're you getting so intense about, Dag?" He said in
a conciliatory tone.
Dag looked suspiciously at Exe's hands, as if he might have something up his
sleeve. "Turn around" he commanded.
"Dag" Exe said in a wounded tone. "You know that as a Knight, I am pledge to
the truth" he added.
"Yeah, Yeah," Dagron said. "You'd never bend the truth would ya, Exe?" he
said as Exe turned around to reveal. . .nothing. "And neither would the two
ballerinas I took to dinner a while ago, would they?" he concluded, his gaze
shifting to Ganzelle, standing patiently, eyes front, both arms firmly behind
his back.
Dagron pursed his lips, clearly considering the issue. "Brother Ganzelle" he
began. "I would hate to think that you might something behind your back. I
would further hate to think that what is behind your back is what WAS behind
Exe's back." He said amicably. "I've always liked you Ganzelle, you know
that" he said, his voice rising, "And I'd hate to have to hurt you. Now, be
a good lad and give Uncle Dag what's behind you back" he concluded with a
kind, fatherly smile on his face.
Ganzelle swallowed hard, sweat beginning to bead on his forehead. "My back
Dag?" he began "There's noth. . ."
Dagron held his hand up, palm toward Ganzelle. "Don't brother, I couldn't
bear it" He reached out and grabbed Ganzelle's arms and pulled them to the
front - empty! Dagron sighed a weary sigh. "Put your hands on top of your
head Ganzelle and don't move them" he said. "Exe, you too" he commanded,
glancing over to be sure that Exe obeyed, which he did, being no fool. He
turned to Tuvor and fixed him with a steady eye. He stepped close to Tuvor
and reached around behind him, bring the silver tray out after three of four
pulls. He looked at the tray and the then at Tuvor, at the tray and then at
Ganzelle, at the tray and then at Exe. He frowned and looked at the ceiling.
"I'm gonna assume that you guys brought this tray back here with food on it,
that you finished the food, and that you were about to return the tray to the
table. I know, I KNOW that's what this tray is dong back here. I KNOW you
guys weren't planning on livening up this reception a bit." he continued.
"Oh no Dag, we weren't. . ."
"No way Sir Dagron, we were just. . ."
"Nice reception Dag, why would we. . ."
All three of the Knights tried to speak at the same time, all shaking their
heads with vehemence and energy.
Dag held his hand up once again, silencing the three. "All right. All of
you, out where I can keep an eye on you. Ganzelle, say good bye to your
friend first" he said indicating the Sewing dummy. With that, he gave each a
stern look once again, and turned and strode out of the cloak room, followed
by the three Knights, now intent on looking innocent and normal. "Whew"
Ganzelle whispered, as Dagron's back receding into the crowd. "That could've
gotten nasty."
"What makes you think it didn't" Exe said with a wry smile.
"I need to find new friends" Tuvor said with a look at Exe. But Exe wasn't
looking or listening. He was scanning the crowd.
"I wonder where that damn Kender went" he mused. Tuvor and Ganzelle looked
at each other and suddenly discovered they had business elsewhere, each
disappearing quickly into the crowd.
"I wonder. . ." Exe said. "We've got to find him guys"

The forest is quiet tonight.
More peace than this forest has seen in the last two month's I know.
So much blood on my hands, I don't think that the great Unicorn will ever
forgive me, no matter the reason, no matter the object of my hate.
Why did it have to happen to her? To the reason I have for life and love.
Why her? Why me?
It was such a nice day when Illydur, Lena's mentor, came by and asked for
me to join him in investigating a disturbance in the Broken Hills. It seemed
that there were rumors of a Troll unrising and he needed my help in finding
out. Of course I would help. This man was as a brother to me, and a father
to Lena. Heck, he gave her away at the wedding. So, I didn't even hesitate
when he asked for my help.
We left out that morning, beautiful and clear, I was glad to be alive. I
kissed Lena good-bye in the study, she always had her head in a book, Illydur
always said she was his greatest student. Truth is we both knew she was his
only student.
We arrived in the Broken Hills in 3 days without incident, and found
absolutely nothing. No sign of any Trolls or any other creature of any note.
It was really puzzeling. Well, we decided to continue the search for another
2 days then return with a report of no trouble.
Our journey home was much the same as our departure. Perfect days and
nights. We talked at night about all the adventures we have had together,
the three of us. And we laughed at the time when we were facing a tribe of
orcs that had come down out of the hills to raid a nearby village and Lena
tried to cast a lightning bolt and what came out was a ton of flowers. We
laughed so hard at the time that we didn't even notice that the orcs fled
from fright.
When we returned home, everything seemed fine, I wasn't looking for
anything out of the ordinary. But when we entered the house it was empty.
Ordinarily that would not have bothered me but something set off alarms. I
began to really look around. Closely, very closely. Illydur asked what was
wrong and told me not to worry that Lena was probably just taking a break
from reading and went looking for some spell components. I knew in my heart
that something was wrong. I went outside and began to look around, after a
while I finally found her tracks and they lead off into the forest. Illydur
began to get worried, he knew that my instincts were nothing to trifle with.
So we took off into the forest as fast as I could follow the tracks.
We found her body less than a mile away.
We did not have to examine her to know that she was dead. And from the
position it was apparent that she died horribly.
For what seemed like hours we stood and stared at her. Not really
believing what had happened. Then my instincts once again kicked in and I
began investigating the area. I was soon obvious that the creatures involved
were a mixture of trolls and giants.
The fire began to burn.
While I was investigating I had not noticed Illydur. He was still standing
there staring, but his expression had changed. I saw in his eyes what I knew
was in mine also. Fire. The fire of rage. A fire that could only be cooled
by blood and vengence. I began to try and talk to him. He could not hear
me, and raw energy was beginning to dance about his body. I began to scream
at him to gain control, but I knew it was too late, I ran. I ran, but not to
save my life from what was coming but to gain the vengence my wife deserved.
I ran with the wind and the fire in my heart.
We had lived with the syvan elves of Silverwood for many years. The scream
that Illydur uttered could be heard, I am told, in the village of Knotbrook
five leagues away. The fireball could be seen for fifteen leagues. And I
don't think the elves of Silverwood will ever forgive him. I don't think it
matters to him anymore.
After he calmed down we became suspicious of the news we recieved to go to
the Broken Hills. Illydur went off to trace the word back to the source. He
has kept me informed through a kind inn-keeper in Knotbrook of his progress.
The last time I was by the inn I found out that Illydur had found out that an
evil mage by the name of Darkleith was behind the assault and that he was a
very, very powerfull mage indeed. For all I know he is dead now. But I
don't think that Illydur would be kind enough to let him die so easily.
Since the day we parted the hunt has been going. I have killed so many
trolls and giants that the shining elven chain that was a wedding gift to me
from my wife has turned a permenant shade of red. I swords even thou magic
have become worn and even chiped.
The forest is so quiet tonight.
I stand before the doors to the great hall of giants. From the tracks that
I have found I believe there are up to 60 giants inside and they know I am
here. They have to know I have left a trail of thier bretheren behind me.
This is where my fires will be quenched. This is where it will end and I
will join my wife if the great unicorn wills it. And if she does not, it is
still the end.The Trio

glory. The feeling of defeat and of victory. It's what I live for, it's what

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Tooth and nail, with rapid intensity I attacked the bully that had stolen my
silver from me just yesterday. The element of surprise admittedly helped me
overcome the one I attacked, and fortunately all went well. Several minutes
later, the three of us stood around our victimrs, myself, Victor and the mate
we had just rescued. Before us lay the two bullies groaning and moaning from
the rather through thrashing we had just given them.
Slowly, I sized up the person I had just helped save. He was still crouched
on the other side of the alley, twirling that ole worn out sock of his and
look rather warily at Victor and myself.
"Mighty kinda of yas gents, mighty kind... " Said the bloke, still keeping
his guard up. "Me name be Pike, yer help is appreciated. But don't go
expecting nothing fer it, cause I ain't gonna give yas nothin!"
Chuckling I smiled at the bloke, "I be Tyo mate, and this here is my brother
Victor. We ain't expecting any kinda reward for this. As thrashing 'em was
more then a just reward" I informed Pike as I issued another swift kick to
the bully on the ground.
Bending down, I quickly searched the two bullies and relieved em of any
valuables they had on em. The amount wasn't much, being as they had
obviously spent my money last night.
"Well, it ain't much but it'll have ta do I suppose." I muttered as I counted
the coins and handed Victor his share.
Grinning devilishly, I extended my hand to Pike, holding his share in my
hand. "You earned it mate"
**** **** ****
Well, quite a surprise all this was I tell yas! Not minutes ago I hadn't
known these two odd scruffians and was being jumped by two menacing bullies.
Now here I was, talking to these blokes.
As Tyo extended his hand to give me my share, I realized he was splitting the
booty from the whooping we had just given these blokes. Smiling, I took the
change from him.
"Thank yas bloke, couldna done it wid out yas." Hooking my sock ta me belt,
and glancing at the two bullies. I spat in the face of one, "Enjoy yer trash
heap bloke, I think I'll be leaving like ya asked" Grinning at Tyo and
Victor, "How bout lunch, eh?"
The two nodded there agreement and we left the two bullies there on the
ground wallowing in self pity.
**** **** ****
"Bout time those friggin bullies learned there lesson I says! Why not just
but yesterday they robbed me of my money Pike." I spoke in between the soup I
was rapidly slurping away at.
"Aye, I suppose those blokes got what's was comin to em. Callin that trash
heap there 'turf'. Sheesh, all I was doing was looking fer some more socks!"
"Socks you say? What the heck you be needing socks fer mate?" I inquired,
finding the whole idea of looking through trash bins for socks rather
amazing.
"Well as weapons of course! Nothing better then a couple socks ta defend
yerself wid I say. Cheap and effective, the best combo! Or so me pop says."
Pike said, as he unhooked his sock and brought it up on the table for Vic and
I to look at.
"Yas see? Very simple, yas find yerself an old sock, put a stone in da toe
and viola! Yas got yerself a friend fer life. Gotta find the right sock
though, those hose that the women folk use tears to easily, and a working
mans socks usually has too many holes in it. Take a try at it Tyo, you'll see
what I mean."
Tentatively I took the weapon from Pike and held it in my hand. Such a simple
device really, however I could see his point about it being useful. Standing
I began to experiment with the sock.
"Aye, I see what yas mean mate. These could come in handy."
"Dying back to NW" - Sounds absurd doesn't it. But, if you are in a HURRY to
get back to NW, it beats walking and is MUCH faster provided you are
sufficiently far enough from NW to warrant it, e.g. Longsaddle, Triboar on a
heavy PvP night, etc.
It works like this, you conclude your business out in the boon-docks and
decide you need to get back to NW immediately. Ready everything, if it's not
readied you will likely lose it. Now your ready to meet your maker. Find
an encounter and walk up to the meanest monster there, then step away. The
monster gets a free back attack, you take damage... repeat until dead. You
end up at the gate closest to NW with a few hit points. Find another
encounter, repeat the dying process until your are back in NW.
If you happen to be a spell caster so much the better. Hasten your demise
with a Lightning Bolt/Cause Critical Wounds or three.
