Yuletide is fast approaching! As always, our own beloved NW Santa will be
making stops in NeverWinter all throughout the month of December. The jolly
old elf will have goodies in store for those smart and quick enough to find
him, as he visits various locations in the realms.

Each time Santa enters the realms, he will give a clue to his current
location. The first three players who find Santa first will get gifts from
him. Additionally in each visit, santa will randomly pick out a lucky
adventurer who will also receive a gift.

So, keep your eyes peeled, and those ears attuned to the sound of reindeer,
and you may just find yourself going home with a shiny new item thanks to the
man in red.

Servants of Mystery
(Submitted by: Iadris)

Hail Mystra! Her humble servants we
To Luskan, to Southwall, to farthest woods we ride
To spread her words of fairness and might
Cloaked in blue, we hold aloft our shields
A flame encircled by stars, Her sign revealed

Hail Mystra! Her devoted casters we
To Dracs, to Holders, to magical beasts we go
To serve as mage, cleric, or druid of renown
Orbs of fire and lightening we deftly do throw
Our spells charm or turn or burn till they glow

Hail Mystra! Her noble champions we
To sewers, to dungeons, to darkest realm we tread
To unsheathe our blades against evil and dread
Back-to-back we stand in perilous fights
Against foes befouled by villainy and spite

Hail Mystra! Her gentle helpers we
To the needy, the weak, willingly we tend
To aid the helpless, injured we shall mend
Coins or comfort, none shall be left bereft
Alms we shall bestow, for they are better spent

Hail Mystra! Her constant comrades we
To battle, to quests, to feasts we shall stride
To join our powers in casting and melee
In taverns we gather to share bounty and wealth
Be it ale, tales, helms, or spells of stealth

Hail Mystra! Her sons and daughters we
To the Tower of Mystery, our fortress, we climb
To give our oath, to Goddess this we pledge
The needy shall not be forsaken, or weak lead astray
Our fellow Servants, we shall never betray
Evil we shall smite till they sorely repent
Magic we shall spread, true to Mystra's intent!

A Bit of Elven History
(Submitted by: T GrayWolf)

I was born to the gold elves Riangil and Elemmire deep in the forests of
Cormanthor. My life began at the time that elven life in the Realms was
changing dramatically.
The leaders of the Elven Court had long been discussing the problem of
humanity. Ever since the humans had migrated into the North from those
southern lands of their origins, the elven lords had watched them closely.
It became clear through the centuries that the high birth rate of these
beings caused their numbers to grow greatly despite the short lifespans of
their race. And these creatures were a bit of a mystery and nuisance to the
elves. Many humans were friendly and easy to deal with, desiring only to live
in peace. Others were greedy, looking on the elven lands and arts in
jealousy. These later humans repeatedly invaded our homes, bringing us close
to open warfare with their race.
After much observation and discussion, the elven lords realized that in
order to avoid such an open conflict they had no choice but to retreat from
the lands that humans were claiming. They had realized that humans were too
short sighted to understand the problems that they were causing. While many
elves remembered the times before the humans had invaded the elven forests,
no human remained in distant memory from that time.
No elf can readily abandon the land of his birth, but a mistake had been
made in dealing with this new race. The elves had extended the hand of
friendship to the men they had found wandering in the woods of Cormanthor.
Many of these men truly desired friendship with the elven inhabitants. But,
as their numbers grew and the lands they lived in became crowded, greedy
humans cast aside treaties that had been made in the time of their great
grandfathers. Why should they be expected to obey the silly agreements? Again
and again, humans pushed the elves to the edge of conflict. Finally,
realizing that nothing short of full scale warfare would keep the humans at
bay, the elven lords decided that they needed an alternative.
Evermeet, that large chain of islands in the western sea, provided a
perfect solution. There were already a few elves on the islands and many of
the elves had visited there. All had agreed that no more beautiful place
existed on Faerun. The elves agreed from the beginning that no members of any
other race should ever be allowed to settle in Evermeet. No matter how
friendly, no matter how good their intentions, no other races would be
allowed to stay in the islands. This would ensure a home for the elven race
where the ideals of the elven way could be upholded free from influence by
the lesser races. The islands themselves were large, as large as the old
kingdom of Cormanthor, and covered in forests and rolling hills.
With their minds finally made up, the elven lords departed from the
mainland. Elves were carried to the coasts on the backs of giant eagles
where they secretly boarded ships bound for Evermeet. This departure seemed
sudden to the other races living in the area, and it is not likely that any
non-elf could ever truly understand the reasons behind it. The defenses of
Evermeet have been built up to the point that no power on the face of the
world could break in. Mages cannot scry into the islands or teleport within
the borders. Windriders on giant eagles patrol the skies to keep away any
unwanted aerial visitors. Elven ships remain at the ready to repel any
invaders. The whole island chain is surrounded by dangerous reefs that keep
any unwanted visitors at arm's length. Deep within the waters around the
islands live the sea elves. They keep scouts on the lookout for any approach
from under the sea. Elven masons have sealed all the caverns on the island
to prevent access from the Underdark, and those areas are watched constantly.
Even with these defenses, curious and greedy humans have tried to land
in Evermeet. They whisper of great elven hoards of treasure collected over
the centuries and care not for the rumors of strong defenses. More than
once, the elven fleet has set upon and destroyed human ships that strayed too
close to Evermeet. However, elves have not abandoned the mainland. Many
elves remained behind. Some did not wish to leave the lands of their birth,
others had missions to perform before departing. The elven presence is still
strongly felt. Evermeet is just a secure homeland, a place where weary elves
might retire to and enjoy the company of their cousins.
I am one who has remained behind. I wish that I could retreat across the
sea to be with my kin. I have journeyed to Evermeet before. For those elves
who have not, I do not recommend it unless you intend to stay. Coming back
to Faerun tore at my heart. I long for the rolling green hills and the light
laughter of my kin. But, like many others of my cousins, I have a duty to
perform here in Faerun. I have to try and keep the other races from
destroying themselves. Humans would blindly drive all life from Faerun if
they were allowed to, even destroying themselves in the end. I, as all
elves, love life too much to sit back and do nothing. So I joined with the
Grey Company, other elves who had remained behind to try and save the lands
from the destructive tendencies of other short sighted beings.
I believe, as do many elves, that there is a balance that can be
obtained. That all life deserves its place in the world. I do not believe in
the genocidal tendencies of some who think that we would all be better off
without goblins, giants, dragons, and humans. I can see the destructive
tendencies in those races, but also see that they are, in their own way, all
beneficial. So I remain here, fighting to maintain a balance in the world,
longing to give up the struggle and return to my true home of Evermeet.

Look To Your Heart
(Submitted by: HG Sharna)

Sharna wheeled and brought her mace to fall squarely upon the horned skull of
the hideous green hag, splattering blood and bits of flesh and bone upon her
robes and the walls of the dimly lit chamber. "Damn!" she cursed aloud,
"This is not going well."

The fallen hag was quickly replaced by another, then another, and she found
herself backed into a corner and surrounded by the foul smelling creatures.
Her spells had all but been exhausted on the dracolichs when she first
entered the battle, and but for a single lightning bolt, had only her
weaponry skills left to get her out of the fray. "This is definitely not
going well," she sighed as behind the hags she observed the remaining
dracolich lumber forward.

Raising high on its haunches, the drac stretched it skeletal frame forward
breathing fire on the combatants. Several of the hags exploded into flame
and crumbled at Sharna's feet, the resist fire spell she cast protecting her
from the full force of the flames. Another hag fell to her mace as the drac
moved closer, its hollow eye sockets burning with a flaxen luminescence that
seemed to pierce straight into her soul.

Sharna lifted her slender blood-covered arms toward the great beast as bolts
of lightning radiated from her fingers. The great beast roared in pain and
momentarily stopped its advance as the charge ripped though its body, but it
did not fall. The monster then set its paralyzing gaze upon her that she
reflected once... twice... before belching another upheaval of flame and
death from its maw, knocking Shar off her feet. Pain wracked her body as she
attempted to regain her footing, but the drac was upon her and poised to
deliver he final killing blow before she could counter the attack.

"Shar..." a familiar voice said her mind, "Run, my love."

"Renik?" she whispered as the great beast attacked, sending her into
darkness.

~ ~ ~ ~ ~

"Shar.. can ye hear me?" the voice said again. "Aye, my love." the young
Harper replied as she slowly opened her eyes, her heart stopping as she gazed
upon the face of Renik. "My Love!" she screamed and embraced the man she
thought dead for the past several weeks. Raising her soot blackened face,
she kissed Renik deeply, as she never had before and tears began to well up
in her eyes.

"Renik," Sharna sighed as their lips parted, "I thought ye dead."

The man smiled. "I love thee as well Shar, with all my heart and I 've
missed thee terribly. Alas, I am dead. Gone from these realms forever."

"But?" Sharna began, only to be cutoff when the man placed his fingers on her
lips.

"My time allowed with thee is fleeting my love." the man said holding her
tightly. "Speak not, just hold me close and listen. I have watched thee and
am proud of what ye have done for the Harpers. You have it within you to
take them to new heights within the realms as we always planned."

"But without you..." she began again.

"Shhh...." the man said, "without me ye shall do fine. Ye have great
resources at yer side in Flaire, Quill, Seth, Shadow and Tarl."

Sharna shook her head. "No.. I want you, to be with you always."

"And ye shall be," the man smiled, his image beginning to fade. "No... do
not leave me!" Sharna cried.

"I shall never leave thee my love. Just look in your heart and in the heart
of another and ye will find me there.

"Another? What do you mean another?"

The man smiled. "Look to your heart and you will know him."

Sharna reached out to clutch the man and kiss him one last time before he
vanished.

~ ~ ~ ~ ~

"Heh, she is coming around I think," Flaire chucked.

Sharna slowly opened her eyes as she continued to kiss the man in her dream.
Standing at the edge of her bed, Flaire and Quill smiled down at her.

"Ummm, If you guys are through, we can start the meeting any time." Quill
chuckled. "When you didn't show at Trappy's, Tarl decided we'd better come
out here and fetch ya."

"Tarl?" Sharna uttered sleepily.

"Aye," Quill answered. "You remember him, don't ya?. He's that blushing
gentleman sitting there next to you that you grabbed on to and started
kissing when he tried to wake you?"

Sharna bolted upright, releasing Tarl and began to stutter, looking first at
Tarl then to Quill and Flaire.. "Oh my... I'm ... I'm sorry Tarl. I thought
it was... I mean that you were, ... that is that he was...,"

Flaire and Quill roared with laughter. "We know," Flaire smiled taking Quill
by the arm. "But he isn't is he?"

"No, of course he isn't," Sharna replied getting off the bed, her blushing
cheeks a bright cherry red. "Of course he isn't . . ." she repeated looking
into the deep blue eyes of the equally flushed Tarl. "How could he be?" she
continued, following Flaire and Quill out of the cottage.

Glancing back over her shoulder at Tarl, a small voice suddenly spoke in her
mind.

"Look to your heart and you will know him."

The Harper's Guild
Lost - Part 3
(Submitted by: Shanista)

Shanista was exausted....Between the massive amounts of teaching, constant
studying on her part, and the "silly errands" he was sending her on...she
felt she was at her wits end. On one evening after returning from
Triboar...her master called her aside and looked intently at her. "What is
the matter with you?" he demanded. "I am teaching you all that you should
know to accomplish your tasks and you act like a love sick fool! I will not
stand for this!" he bellowed. Shanista cringed knowing better than to evoke
his anger. "Forgive, master but I have been tired as of late.....I am
working and studying so hard to please you...I know that this is important to
you and I do not wish to disappoint you." she said in a humbled voice. "What
is it with you and this...this ...Jantyr? He fits nowhere into my plans. You
need to forget about him! Do what I am telling you in this matter...If you
pursue this any further...it will only be worse for you in the end." he
flatly stated.

Shanista knew that he was right about Jantyr but she still couldnt help but
thinking about him. On several occasions she had seen him about
Neverwinter....or heading into the sewers. She caught and held his gaze
once..and all that was reflected was an odd pained filled expression that she
could not understand. It was almost like it was killing him...doing what he
was to her. It only served to deepen her sorrow.....reflect into her wild
mood swings as of late. Swings that everyone around her were noticing. Moods
that were black....sullen....dangerous... She quickly moved her thoughts
back to what her master was saying.......... something in regards to
Delrachnid...."Damn" she thought. "I should have paid attention to that one.
Now I will have to pry the information out of him." and she knew that that
would be a difficult task because he felt that she wasnt paying attention. He
knew what he must do about this. If he was to continue to keep her as his
assistant....to teach her what she must know....he would have to resort to
drastic measures....He must remove Jantyr from the picture....and as much as
it would pain her...he knew exactly how to do it.........He sent her off to
her rooms to sleep <casting a spell upon her so that she would not hear what
he was doing> and set out upon his task......."Everything is done for a
reason" he stated to no one in particular. "And this is something that I
must attend to right now... before it is too late." His shape and form began
to change......a mist formed around him..and he vanished from the
room...............................................................

Triboar Encounter
(Submitted by: HG Tarl)

Tarl was racing. The urgent missive he had just received pin-pointed the
evil Bonze somewhere in Triboar. Cresting the small, tree covered knoll in
the eastern Neverwinter Wood, he urged his gallant steed, Silvermyst, on.

White-foamed forth poured down Silvermyst's strong, sturdy flanks as the
valiant lightning steed sped eastward. They crossed the Wood at break-neck
speed, the tall oaks blurring to solid green-gray haze, as the horse and
rider streaked across the ilk-infested forest.

Casting a 'Invisibility 10 foot Radius', the pair skirted the outlying
reaches of Longsaddle virtually unscathed. Turning south, they soon found
themselves whizzing past the Troll-ridden hills of Berun.

Tarl slowed Silvermyst to a trot, as they enter the outskirts of Triboar.
"Good girl", he whispered in the lathered horse's soft, gray ear. "Easy me
lady, ye deserve a rest after that monumental run" Tarl told his weary steed.
Tarl dismounted, preferring to walk his deserving horse to the Triboar Inn,
and a much-needed rest.

"Ah Ha!" " Found Ye!", Tarl shouted as he spotted the evil kidnapper "The
Bonze" leaving the crowded Triboar Inn. "I do indeed challenge ye oh evil
one" Tarl snarled as the Bonze quickly turned south down the road to
Westbridge. "Give her up, and I may not have to gate ye", Tarl said as the
Bonze ducked into the Triboar Arena. "Muhahahahaha" echoed of the Arena
walls as the Bonze turned to fight.

Five griffins, a thief, and the Bonze awaited the young Harper as he entered
the fray. The Bonze moved quickly south, skirting the creatures, and casting
what appeared to be a 'Globe of Protection'. Tarl moved quickly to regain
lost ground, and after casting a 'Minor Globe', trapped the evil Bonze
between a wall, and griffin's with a 'Stinking Cloud'. Choking, unable to
move, the Bonze was trapped. Tarl's next cast was fortunate indeed, as the
silent griffin now kept the evil lady-snatcher from casting retaliatory
spells.

The battle raged on, as the Bonze desperately slew the silencing beast, and
moved down next to Tarl. This fit well with the skilled Harpers battle-plan,
as he now cast a flurry of 'Cause Critical', and 'Cause Serious' spells on
the Bonze. Wounded, the Bonze struck back, casting several wicked 'Slay
Living' spells at the beleaguered Harper.

Fortunate indeed was Tarl, that Lord Nasher had gifted him this very eve with
a brand new +3 Cloak of Protection. Tarl shook off the 'Slay' spells with
little damage, and finished the evil Bonze with a Scroll cast 'Cause Critical
Wounds'.

As the evil one slammed into the Gate, Tarl heard his echoing voice "I'll
send ye a clue, Muhahahahaha". Smiling, knowing he had indeed hurt the evil
Mask, Tarl returned to the Inn, and the cold kegs of Triboarian Ale.

Sitting by the warm glow of the fire, Tarl lifted his mug in a toast, "Be
strong M'lady Minerva, the Harpers are indeed on the path to yer rescue".

Dusk of the Year
(Submitted by: Morngrym)

Our fields are silent and barren
The wheat has met the scythe
     Empty but for corner patches
Grown over with lively vines and pumpkins

The scarecrow still holds his lonely vigil
Though there is no reason now
Crows may flock until the spring
When we drop the first seed

     Fallen leaves carpet the ground
     Colorful and crisp they lay
     Loudly announcing the passing
     Of even the wind

And the trees' newly bare branches
     Hang as skeletal silhouettes
     Against the clear night sky--
Watched over by the harvest moon

     The earth is becoming cold
As hay strewn wagons rumble over it
I sense hope in the cooling air
     A feeling of peacefulness

It is a season to reflect
On heated days and what they held
A time to look toward winter
And find a way to keep warm.

Lechery of Evil
(Submitted by: Mershu)

A harsh wind howled and the words appeared
"You can't walk away from me little girl."

Said a dark souled man with an evil shimmer

"You'll never get away from me."

That man was before me, tall, skanky and thin.

"You can't hide from me girl."

Cloaked was he with a red glimmer and pointy chin.

"I'll find you girl - I'll hunt you down."

I turned to flee from the black cloaked man.

"Give into me, for you are mine."

And again standing before me,
With a pale face and a sneer on his lips.

"You'll never get away from me girl."

I can walk away for there is no evil in my soul.
And for ever more I would see his pale face.

"You can't walk away from me girl, someday you will be mine."

Ode to Sharna
(Submitted by: HG Tarl)

The soft-rosy blush of her silk-smooth cheek
Has oft made even our Lord Nasher swoon
Her gentle smile, a friend to the meek
Shar's radiance outshines the fresh full moon.

Her scent tis of wildflowers
Fresh bloom'd in the Morn
Her lilting voice
No mortal dare scorn

Bell-true and clear
Once lifted in song
Her Silver Harp plays
All the night long

This Lavender Lady
Of charm and of Wit
Deserves this Royal Crown,
On the the Throne she should sit

HG Sharna tis the Lady
of whom I do speak
A Harper, A Bard
A Champion of the weak.

Miss Realms 95
Tis the title you propose
Miss Realms forever
In this humble Harpers Soul.

The continuing evolution of Player Versus Player
(Submitted by: Greyshrike)

As most players realize PVP was not written into the game. The development of
killing another player makes for great reading and is well documented on the
boards. The rise of guilds is a direct consequence of this player created
feature. The etiquette of combat has been laid down by consensus of the
participants. Most players abide by the concept of no direct dispel magic, no
direct silence, no re-entry once a char has died. The trick of casting dispel
magic on yourself in order to "bonus" a nearby PC is sometimes seen. When
these unwritten laws were violated either by ignorance or by intent all
participants in the battle would lay aside their enmity and band together to
destroy the transgressor. All rules were then suspended. The violator would
be dissed, silenced, feebed, and poisoned. This slaughter has tended to
discourage the repetition of "unlawful" behavior.

As version 2 came on line there was a new development in PVP: the death
match. When a player lost in the death match arena, he found himself in a
room with no way out. The loser must retire his character and lose all items,
and experience. The PC would then have to roll a new character. Once again
the players consensus has modified this game feature. It is now widely
accepted that DM means delete match instead of death match. The loser of the
match is expected to delete his screen name. There is no way to ensure
compliance with this unofficial rule. Many have simply ignored it. The
community of respected players enforce their will by ridiculing the PC that
reused to go along with what is generally felt as proper. Respect of a guild
depends on respect of it's individual members. A guild that harbored an
"outlaw" would lose prestige, respect and consequently fail to attract new
members which are the lifeblood of a guild. If the battle or agreements were
not in good faith then the loser is under no obligation to delete. If there
is doubt as to the agreements prior to the match, or to the fairness of the
combat, the matter would have to be arbitrated by someone acceptable to both
sides of the dispute. Since loss of char and name are grave consequences to a
serious player, it would be advisable to have a staff member present to
verify agreement, check out both combatants prior to the match, and to
witness the actual combat.
